I go to a few fly ins each year, I have been attending the one at Foot Light Ranch for many years. The problem I have with an open invitation fly in is, there are so many Yahoo pilots out there that can cause ,at a minimum a nuisance and at worst a fatality. If I get the airport, I will have an invitational fly in to get the neighbors aquanted with my flying buddies and how we operate. Possibly give rides. throw some burgers on the grill and get to know the neighbors while they have a good time and get to know us. I have seen to many crazy things happen at fly ins to just invite the general flying public. I am a prety good judge of character and I haven't heard any yahoo pilots on these forums yet. You guys know the types I am talking about.

Are there any EPA type police you have to be concerned about these days when doing paint work - at least in you neck of the woods in PA. It's been 20 yrs since I stripped and painted a plane. Back in those days, there was no EPA or at least it didn't have the nazi like power it weilds today.

Thanks Luke,
The Kitfox 1 and 2 show 86 5/8 same locations, and the Kitfox 4 shows 96 3/4 - The Speedster 97 3/4.
If I was an aero-engineer, I might know whether it makes any difference.

Thanks Trackwelder, but I plan to make my own - mine are real bastards - nothing like them for Avid or Kitfox - 30 years of doing fiberglas - don't mind laminating, but sure hate grinding!

What a great location. I'm very familiar with the area - flown or driven by it numerous times during my 25 yrs (until recently) living an hour away in the Shenandoah Valley area of VA. Motorsports is big in PA. I can completely understand why someone would want a drag strip there. In fact I recall a motorsports museum and oval track down the road from there off of Rt. 15 you're likely familiar with.
In NC I've found there's numerous small airstrips and airstrip fly-in communities (more than I encountered in VA). It's customary for each and every to have well organized "fly-in's" through out the year open to the public. This w/e I'll be attending my 3rd in 2 consecutive w/e's. These go a long way I feel in getting buy-in, awareness, good-will, education and support from the locals and demonstration on the part of the the airport owners and aircraft operators of being part of the community and contributors to the tax base. Great opportunities abound especially in introducing youngsters to flying.
True that the "turds". They tend to be like locusts, arrive from elsewhere and destroy things - in this case others right to pursue happiness and prosperity.

I downloaded one of the mauals from the site a while back. Not sure which model it is for (doesn't seem to say), but I would guess this measurement is the same for all Avids except the Magnum.
There is a diagram that shows 80" from the end of the tube to the center of the bolt hole. Hope that's what you were looking for.

Butt ribs, there would be an easy part to make, do you need STOL or Speedwing profile? I have the STOL if you wanted a different airfoil send me a paper pattern and I will make some up. I am looking for simple easy parts that I could build to add to my building fund. My wife will graduate nursing school in May but until then it is just my disability paying her tuition and all our other expenses, the plane winds up getting left out some months.

Joey I had the same issue. I used mounts from Mcmaster Carr to replace mine. 20% of the cost of Lord mounts. Same fit and function except the threaded ends are 1/8" longer and need to be cut down on the front side to allow use of acorn nuts to secure panel. Also the material is steel instead of brass if that matters to you.
McMaster p/n:
9376K15 (7 lb) I used these across the top on the panel. $1.57 each
9376K17 (20 lb) I used these across the bottom for more shear strength. $1.97 each
They have about 30 hours on them and my panel is solid as can be.

Where are you at with this project? If you haven't installed the tail feathers yet, I would definetly strip and paint the plane properly. Use Sea to Sky hydrogine peroxide based stripper. It works great and doesn't burn your skin like the old stripper did. An easy way to apply it is to spray it on. I have an expensive stainless steal air driven pump with a wand sprayer and 50' hose. I can cover an entire airplane in less than an hour. Since you are only doing 1 airplane you can use a shutz gun, which is an auto undercoating sprayer, costs about 25 bucks. It will take you alot longer to spray your entire aiframe, but it beats the hell out of brushing it on. I use a shutz gun for stripping small parts and touchup stripping after the overall strip is finished. DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE STRIPPING PROCESS. It isn't that bad of a job. I enjoy it , it is a mindless simple process in which you see gratifying results very quickly. With a good helper I can strip a plane in a couple of days. Prep, dent repair , and all the rest is where the time can build up. If you decide to take this route I will gladly answer any questions you have to the best of my knowledge. Good luck.

I've never seen one installed... ?
If they had them at one time, I stand corrected. They do not any more. The new SS planes don't come with such a thing.

Finally finished up this project tonight. Was going to test fly but while under the panel doing wiring I noticed a couple of The Lord mounts that hold my panel on were cracked and sagging. Well all but one was broke off. One good shitty landing and I may have gotten my panel in my lap!

Larry,
My Kitfox catalog has them for the 5 and later at $51 a pair, unless I am reading it wrong - I thought the Avid Magnum also had them, but have to check my manual on that.

Cant open Avid Manual series...Can Someone give strut attach measurements?I have never been able to open any of the Avid Build Manual Files - Just for my info, can anyone give me the dimensions from the wing root to the hole in the strut attach fitting on the spars? I have model 1 and 2, and model 4 Kitfox dimensions, and there is about 10 inches difference between them - Just wondering how this compares to the different Avid models from A to MkIV.

I can confirm that Kitfox Model IV and older do NOT have any square tubes in the cabin area.
I would guess this to be a 5 or newer by that fact.

We had one move up from Baltimore MD to our current airport in Dover Pa. She KNEW that she owned the airspace above her property to infinity. She called the FAA for months everytime an airplane took off or landed from the airport. Finally the FAA had a talk with her and informed her that she bought a house at the end of a runway that had been there for 20 years and that she had to stop wasting their time because they had to answer every call they receive. We nick named her the Baltimoron. She eventually ended up getting a divorce and loosinfg the house, which was promptly bought by a local pilot at half it's previous sale price. Ain't Karma a bitch.

We had one of those turds living about 200 feet north and a little to the side of the end of the runway - she took photos of every plane that she thought was flying too low over her house on final for runway 18 - the airport was finally sold and closed, and highway I-44 took her house -
Real PITA!

Ed,
By doing it the way I normally do, it keep the web crawlers and bot from getting your number then selling said number to advertisers who just love to email and text you crap out of the blue to try and get you to buy something That said, I have posted my number all over the web as well and if my phone starts getting blown I just put it on silent and go about my day.

Allonsye,
The airport is Circle W airfield designator PA72 in East Berlin PA. It is between Gettysburg and Harrisburg. My father flew skydivers from this field from 1966 to 1974. Then in 1990 a freind of my Dad bought the field and we both based our planes there until his death in 2008. The airport went up for auction and was sold to a father and son who wanted to open an 1/8 mile drag way. That didn't go over to well with the neighbors and after a 2 year battle with the zoning board and the neighbors, the father and son gave up and put the property back up for sale. Now the father has passed on and the son is ready to put this whole thing behind him and move on. It was their dream to own a race track together and now it is my dream to put my business on the field. It really sucks having your future decided by others. I am praying that the neighbors will see how little impact, if any, my business will have on their lives. There a a bunch of hard working ,good, red blooded americans in this neck of the woods but, there can always be a turd in the punch bowl who doesn't want to see anyone else prosper. Hopefully there isn't a turd in my punch bowl.
