    Thanks Geoffrey,
I always thought that there must be a reason why Wisconsin lost the land.  Usually, its a politician trying to make money - seems like things never change!

Michigan and Ohio went to war over Toledo (well, at least they marched militia's in that direction). In the end, Ohio got Toledo and Michigan got the U.P. as a consolation prize.

The last price I saw on Oratex came out to be about $175 a yard - (maybe that's a mistake, and it was $75 a square yard?), anyway it costs a lot, while the other fabric runs about $8 to $10 a running yard, 70 inches wide. Note that Oratex prices are not for the complete width and running yard like Ceconite, but SQUARE yards, which can fool you.
One of the AFF guys finished his using Ceconite and the complete Stewart system for about $2000 for White and Red.
The Kitfox catalog says it takes about 35 running yards of fabric to cover a plane - this fabric is 70" wide, so it is almost equal to 70 Square yards.

Added:   I seem to remember that the early Kitfoxes came with a lot less fabric than they now list.
The list of covering materials and quantities needed is in the Kitfox catalog which you can download and print.

O.K. through all of this, do we have an estimate of what it would cost (total cost with glue and tapes) to cover a KF or Avid with Oratex (4K ish)?  I am fixing to start a cover of my plane (a Model III) and am currently planning to use Stewart Systems, but... do like the option of not having to deal with fill coats and top coats.  Mine will be a solid color and that is another driver.  A few folks sounded like they had intentions of trying.  Any feedback from those who have used it (and would they do it again)?

I have always wondered - How, Why, When, and What shyster politician got the upper part of Wisconsin cut off from that state and made it the "Upper Peninsula" of Michigan? Never made sense to me, and I lived in Michigan for a while when young. Couldn't understand why Duluth was in Mn either?

IMO - You used the best system. The rod-end system made a larger gap between the VS and Rudder.
I think you will make a big difference in the way it handles.

Thanks for the image.  That is quite a bit different than the system I used.  (I basically used the old 4 place round-tube-pin-bushing system it had previously). Vertical height increase of the vert stab was 6.5"  When together reasonably well.

I'm in northern Mn. About 60 miles NNW of Duluth. Closest town is Chisholm. Right in the middle of the Iron Range (iron ore mines) Just saw on the TV that it was already only +2 F and clear, so it will get below 0 tonight. Jim Chuk

I guess you'll be getting some good out of all the firewood I saw stacked up at your place then!  )
It's supposed to get down to 25 degrees here in north Florida Tuesday night (be back to 70 on Thursday).  I expect a run on heavy coats at the local stores....

Rib Stitch the wings, it is easy after the first rib! It will make your plane a lot easier to sell. I'm sure glue and staples work great too, but people looking to buy a plane will cringe if it is not rib stitched.

    Good luck,

Called the seller and the plane sold within 2 hours. Wow.
He is surrendering the AW cert for liability reasons.
I called the local FSDO and was told it "MAY" be possible to get it registered.
As C5 said, not worth the hassle.
    The search continues.
    Thanks everyone....

Ignorance and general stupidity causes good experimental aircraft to get destroyed like this.

It's possible but not worth the hassle in my opinion unless your getting the plane for next to nothing and you have a very good working relationship with a DAR. I just seen a guy chop a perfectly good skyraider into pieces and give away the parts to members in the chapter I don't understand it.

  20. EDMO added a post in a topic SCRATCH BUILDING

My 16 years - or 20? - of building included so much time-consuming things that I cant remember all of it - Lived in 5 houses in 2 states, got married, raised two more babies, worked, went to school, traveled about 1/4 million miles in several states and Canada by truck and plane, got divorced, rebuilt another house, moved machine shop from Alaska to Missouri, and got married again, along with having different cancer treatments 3 times, and starting to feel the aches and pains of injuries and getting older.
I sure cant blame the passage of time on building this plane twice - That's just the way life goes on!  Ha!
    EDMO
NOTE:  I have to face the reality of my age and health - I may never get to fly this bird - But the goal of finishing it, with the part-time help of an old flying buddy, is the challenge that keeps me working on it.

  21. EDMO added a post in a topic Rib Stitching (wings and tail)

We rib-stitched the J3 wings, per STC - But that is because the thin aluminum ribs are not as "glueable" - is that a word? - as the wood ribcaps on the AvidFoxes. Some later Piper models and others have a wire-like attachment which clips to the ribs.
If I remember part of my schooling right, seems like AC43-13 may have said something like, "rib-stitching is required above 150 mph cruise"? - and, it also gave the spacing of the rib stitches as closer in the prop blast area than on the outer part of the wings.

Mine were built in '92. The rib/fabric segments show absolutely no sign of any separation whatsover. The glued surface is certainly a much cleaner look than some stitched surfaces I've seen.

The EAA supposedly - I have not read it - has a kick-ass liability clause for selling a homebuilt.
If the guy doesn't want to use that, then it is "parts only" price if de-certified.

Definitely check with your local DAR or FSDO since they'll be the ones you have to deal with to get a new airworthiness certificate.  You'll probably need the original builders log to prove it was 51% amateur built.  You won't be able to get the repairmans certificate for it, since you didn't build the 51%.  Without those logs, you probably are out of luck, and the current owner planning to decertify it should expect to only get scrap price for the plane, since that is effectively what he is telling the FAA he is doing.

I would call a local DAR or FSDO and ask what is envolved. With the 51 percent rule not sure how that works on a decertified  bird. You would have to have it reinspected  and then would apply for a new N number.Good Luck Randy
