Talk about chemicals... I use to flag the aerial applicators in my youth. Mostly in rice fields. I think it affected my brain. I guess that is why I am so afflicted with speed and peril in other vehicles.

If you look at the restored tower behind my craft, you can tell where I am. Scott Field.

    Leni,
I am sure that Toyota had to finally move its factories here for financial and political reasons - but not back when I was working.  I would rather see my $$$ go to Canada than to "The Good People who met us at Pearl Harbor"!  But, I am old school, and things do change - sometimes not for the better - Oh Bummer promised "Change", and you see where that took us!

    Bill,

I had 2 IA's tell me the same thing about putting the 185 tail spring and tail wheel on my 180 as its on the same type certificate under CAR 3.   One of the guys is the Director Of Maintenance for a local air taxi and has been playing this game for a very long time.  Time will tell, but I seriously doubt that anyone would question it, there are not too many old timers around the ranks of the feds that really know whats spose to be on what plane, and most ( that I have dealt with lately) would be hard pressed to tell the difference in a 180 / 185 or a Tcrate and a cub...

A Mod II on the full lotus floats makes a seriously kick ass float plane solo, or with a skinny friend as a passenger ( I am 200 and with a 150 or less passenger it does GREAT).  The video I have on youtube that has sold a ton of floats for those bastages is a mod II.  I can get it off in under 300' solo, and that's not too damn shabby for a float plane.

the sad part of that argument Ed.... Did you know that the Toyota truck is made more in the US than any other truck??  The big 2 are sometimes assembled in the US with parts made from all corners of the world.. The Tundra is made with more US parts and more US labor than any other truck... Maybe that is why they cost so damn much

I'm a lot more angry about the imports than most, since I lost the job I had for 27 years because of foreign cars- cant help that.
I was preaching back in the 1960's about people buying cheap foreign goods, and giving their children's jobs away - I was right.
My Ex bought a Toyota Land Cruiser and had so much trouble and expense with it, she finally sold it and bought a Dodge Durango and has been driving it for nearly 20 years.  My daughter drives it now.

Toyota definitely makes a better car.. fit and finish as well as running gear lasts a lot longer than most ford or gm products... same with truck.. and it's not cheaper than the big 2, just better over all.

First hand info trumps thoughts n speculation. A 90+ hp engine that's only marginally more expensive than a 582 does not sound too bad. Not everyone wants a 912 and the headaches that a 912 can pose as well.

I don't think that Toyota, Honda or Datsun made better cars - Their governments subsidized them to make them cheaper than U.S. cars, and they could bribe the car magazines to make good reports on their cars, just like the Japanese did with the steel industries.
Meanwhile, our $$$$ and jobs went to their countries.

One of our EAA chapter members has lowered the price on his bird for quick sale so I thought I would pass it along.  I will try to get some pics posted as well.

Terry Wade wanted to pass along that he has lowered the price on his bird.  It is a 0 hr Kitfox II with Full Lotus floats (and also traditional gear, which it has on it now).  Airworthiness is complete and it is registered as ELSA.  Just has never been flown. Located in Charlton, NY.   His bargain price is $12,000.00    582 Rotax and 3 blade ground adjustable prop.  Extras.   His number is (518) 399-4999   Pics at:   http://s733.photobucket.com/user/LSaupe/slideshow/Wade%20Fox

GM and Ford were the goliaths of the automobile market until Honda, Toyota, and Datsun came along with better quality cars....

One of the guys who used to post over on the BackCountryPilot.org forum ran the Simonini Victor 2 on a CH-701 STOL homebuilt. He told me that it was a significant improvement over the Rotax he replaced with it.

But... I have no personal experience with either of these engines.

One of the Taylorcrafts was experimental-exhibition... it was a British "Auster" which is a license built variation on the T-craft. It was originally certified in Britain with a full-swivel, non-steerable tailwheel, so the fact that my Matco could both steer and lock was seen as an un-challenged safety upgrade.

The other airplane was a BC-12D, which was certified under CAR-3 instead of FAR 23 (now called 14 CFR Part 23). The wise, old, grizzled, clever IA mechanic I was working with informed me that (under CAR-3) any airplane originally certified with a tail skid as an option could use any tailwheel, because even the CAA (now FAA) realized that any tailwheel of any quality could not ever be any worse than having no tailwheel.

I never actually had to assert or defend this principle, but I do believe that the IA's understanding of CAR-3 would have held up at an enforcement hearing.

Thank you for making this discussion forum possible. I have no doubt that it will continue to provide a tremendous source of information, camaraderie, and resources for the Avid / Kitfox community. I've been a member for just about a week and I have already received very worthwhile benefits, knowledge, parts sources, and education from smarter people than myself.

I grew up near a pecan plantation and I used to stare up at the crop duster flying over and occasionally got pelted with the spray! I grew 24" in one Summer! Ha! Just kidding, but I do wonder what those chemicals probably did to me!

Pretty Avid! I love the paint!

    Mark,
Thanks for looking out for my mistakes in writing / thinking - I knew that was wrong about the canned foam, and I know that some others have used it - donno if they will pay a price for that in the future?

I second those "Thanks" for Leni for establishing and maintaining this site where almost 1000 of us now can discuss, cuss, and try to share things about building and flying our pet birds.   The amount of knowledge on here is great, and the things I have learned from others is worth a lot.
Thanks to Leni and all of you - Happy Turkey Day - even to those in other countries who may not have our holiday.
