Now you guys have me all paranoid. My struts have had the wood fairings on em for over 20 years. I've never done anything with them inspection wise as they appear to be sealed up very good. As EZ mentioned there is really no way to inspect them other than cutting a piece off. I suppose I should take a peek at them though.

I looked at the Quad City Challenger booth during Osh and yes they sell 3 different sizes of fairing. I bought my horizontal stab strut fairing from Rans. Don't think Kitfox is your only option for parts.

Any more info you can post on these? I found the site - $200 for 4 eight-foot pieces is a good price.

I like it! If anyone complains about the paint, just ask to see the airplane they built!! I also noticed the tube in the tail. Looks like a sona tube? How'd you strap it up?

    Ed,
I was just being a smart*ss.  Cherokees have a stabilator - the entire horizontal surface moves, so your ratio would either be zero or infinity, depending on which measurement you put on the bottom.

I was looking over some of the original paperwork for my Avid.  Those Avid factory amphib floats were a $6,995 option - in 1990!  Take good care of them!  The stock Avid was a little over $12,000 - including the 582!

Stopped by Terry's today. The inspection was actually accomplished 14 Jan 2008.  Just before the deadline.

Engine has never been started (stored on the plane and in a garage). It did receive a new crank plus many updates to bring it closer to Blue head specs during the rebuild.

    Mark,
I was part owner of a Cherokee 140 at one time, but I don't remember measuring the tail. I was just interested in high-wing planes at the time.
My design book also states that, "high-wing airplanes need more vertical tail than low-wing".

Did you measure any Piper Cherokee tails? )

After reading my design book about a dozen times concerning the balance between stability and maneuverability concerning the horizontal stabilizer and elevator ratios, I started going around the airport and actually measuring the tails on certified airplanes - I don't remember all of the ratios I came up with, but the Cessna 150 was about 60% stabilizer and 40% elevator, while the Piper Cub is about 50/50.
Another point made in my design book is that cargo planes usually have larger tailplanes for increased amounts of CG loadings.
I guess a good compromise would be about 55/45.

    Hey Jim,
When you fill the rotary valve through the bottom tube, how long does it take to fill up? I tried it last night and thought I must be doing something wrong because it was not filling up. Thanks, Bryce

Plenty of water to fly off in Tri Cities! I would love a ride in your Avid on floats.

Sure thing but the earliest I will be out to my hangar would be this weekend. Anyone with a MK4 working on their bird or flying this week that could take a quick measurement?

Joey could you do me a favor and run a measuring tape on you elevator at the largest part of the cord, so I can compare mine to your new one.  I have a trim tab on mine but its nothing like yours, and I have the same issues that you used to have.  Im thinking I have the old style elevator and someone just added a little trim tab.

Seen an HKS on barnstormers yesterday for $4000. Would be a good engine on a real light plane I would think. Jim Chuk

I've seen two in the last couple of years. You need to look around and talk to people. Barnstormer ads are good, but not the only place.

My friend Dave paid $4500 for his.

Join an EAA chapter or four. Go to the meetings and ask around. They are out there.

there is a guy in France who installed a simonini victor 2 in his avid flyer, he has a blog, http://avidsimonini.blogspot.se/2012/08/i-will-be-at-blois-2012.html

I don´t think he burn half of the fuel of a rotax 582; eventhough he seems happy with the engine, he ran into some issues with the exhaust installation, nothing big in my opinion, but still he is not sure about the fuel burn advertised on that website.  One engine you want to consider is the GEO Suzuki-

G13BB   16  valves SONS about 100 HP naturally aspirated
    G13GTI 16   valves DONS 110+HP naturally aspirated
    G16       16   valves SONS NA about 115HP

    there is this website  http://www.airtrikes.net/engines.shtml

he have conversion kit, is little bit heavier than the 912; but lighter than the soob, he recommended a 45 degree installation to match the gear box  and fit the engine in the cowling, but in my opinion, vertical with a belt drive will do the job just fine.

I`m not doing any advertising here nor connected to any business, however, we should all push for cheaper and more reliable aircraft engines,  they are around us since ealry 80´s running in our cars/bikes.

I would have already this engine installed in my avid if it would be because I need to use a ridiculous amount of money to get engineering company approving the engine conversion; just because nobody else has that engine on a plane here yet.

110 hp at 114lbs and half the fuel burn of a 582 is pretty interesting to me!  I'd rather pack the extra pounds in the cockpit than in the engine.  Hence the question, has anyone heard anything about this motor?

Any way to get a price or supplier for those Challenger fairings - Might be cheaper/lighter than Kitfox?
