Back to the Oratex, I am putting 600 on my kitfox wings and it is a pretty sweet system.  Definitely a huge time saver.  I think I have about $2000 in the material for the wings.   The 600 is definitely tougher than the ceconite I have on the rest of the plane, but not as tough as the 6000.  If I was to do the whole plane, I'd do the areas prone to rock damage with 6000 and the rest with 600.  The only issue I see with it is it is difficult to get it tight in areas with alumnium underneath.  I put aluminum lids on my fiberglass wing tanks, and I've had trouble getting it to shrink enough. I think I'm just not getting aggressive enough with the heat.  I'll be back to it in a few weeks and post some pictures.

I have a team minimax as a hangar-mate. Black and red, too.

Supposedly, the article was meant to be an "Education on Mountain flying", however I read no useful information on that subject; rather reading it like an advertisement for the Kitfox Sport and Alaskan Bushtires, and John McB was one of the 3 pilots flying, along with 2 of his factory wing-builders - Go figure!
Joey's "Backcountry" posts and adventure photos on here are much better and more fun to read.

I got a feeling the guy does not know the difference between effects of dihedral and the induced yaw from the flaperons... hence having to use the rudder.  By far my feet are the most active inputs when flying the Avid or kitfox.

The rudder is what threw me.. I thought it was a minimax as well Larry but something was just not quite right about it   Cool planes, I helped a guy work on one when I was 14 or 15 in Seldovia.

Actually Wayne Ison did some contract work for Fisher flying products. He designed the Avenger, and was the founder of TEAM aircraft which produced the Mini-max, Hi-max, and Airbike kits. That explains why the Avenger and the Mini-max look so much alike. Jim Chuk

Looking good Mark, stay with it.  It was great to get to visit with you over a cup of coffe last month while I was down there in Hood River.

My .02; they fly good as designed and they already have a bunch more dihedral than a cub.  If you take everyone's opinion and try to build a plane you will end up with something like the OSHA approved horse.

Looks like a Minimax to me…  Must be the same thing as a Zenair vs Savannah.

That was a little single seat fisher avenger I did a couple years ago, first tail dragger flight was in that, ha well just say I made it ok but it wasn't the best landing I ever had.

agreed but I'm fighting some negative transfer of skills. Been flying weight shift trikes for over 10 years and have over 1000 hours in weight shift. The controls are all backwards and there isn't a tail. Going to a taildragger is prooving to be a challenge but it's coming. Problem is that the CFI I'm working with isn't as available as I'd like. I'd like to fly as much as possible but some times he's not available for a couple weeks. I've also been going through the systems of the kitfox and that's kept e out of the air too. Combination of things. I'm not in any rush to solo, just want to be super safe. It's not about the time requirement as I already have a sport pilot license.

My problem is raising the tail on takeoff. P factor and the rudder is getting away from me. oddly I can land the airplane because the sight picture is very similar to my trike. In the air I'm o.k. at coordinated flight and airspeed/altitude control. Definitely need a lot more practice but it's fair enough. Really I need to get better with the rudder and aileron controls coming alive on takeoff. I'd have ground looped the plane 20 times by now if my instructor wasn't as good as he is )

you should be solo by now or really darn close.  Fly a bit more between now and then and get your shirt tail cut Mr!

    CFI in Northern CO
    Hey Guys,

I've been training with a flight instructor here that has been great. He's planning on going up to AK in February for a few months so I need another cfi!

Ive got about 22 hours of flight time in my Kitfox 4 with him but am not ready to solo. The plan is to fly as much as possible before he leaves but I need to find another CFI that knows the Kitfox/Avid aircraft. Does anyone know of anyone near me that might know someone who knows a guy who knows a guy who can train me?
I fly out of Boulder (KBDU). Longmont (KLMO) and Erie (KEIK) are very close by.  Anyone know anyone I might want to talk to?

Oh I don"t want to use it I just saw it and thought it looks like a nice system. No I love to paint my own personal touch on my airplanes this is the way I like them to look when I'm finished

Dang, you need to post some photos of that happy ending! I just survived the flu and will get back to building after the holidays - struts now have to wait until spring thaw, or as you say, "Break-up".
I couldn't change the dihedral without bending something anyway - I drilled the wings on the first build - Just asking questions to see what answers might come back...
The welder shop is full of WACOs.

At some point your gonna have to stop researching and get back to building or your never gonna fly the darn plane   You also have to be careful who you drag the knowledge out of.. if its someone like me, I just have strong opinions and limited knowledge   but I do know how these kick ass little planes fly and I aint afraid to fly them in the mountains or land them on a mountain ridge.  My feet work really good, I just hope I only use them on the rudder pedals and not trying to walk my happy ass out of the mountains cause my ego wrote a check my plane couldn't cash

I would bet that I am one of the few who have landed an Avid on floats on the side of a mountain... and not on a lake either.

ahhhh, the bearhawk.. I bought plans when they first came out and started gathering parts and pieces and had big plans to build one... then life kicked my ass and I packed the plans away and forgot about them.  I would LOVE to see pics and a progress thread on this plane as you build it!  If I had not picked up the 180, I was determined to get those plans out again soon and start building the 4 place.  Now get busy and post up some pictures Mr!

I believe the guy stated that he was used to Lycosauris engines and not Rotax - This was just one guys opinion, but it will be read by lots of readers of Kitplanes mag.
I always have questions about something related to planes and flying - Dragging knowledge out of the ones who know more than I do is my part-time job!
The Birddog was fun and powerful to fly, and the government bought the gas, but it was like flying a rock once you lowered those 60 degree flaps! I believe the large dihedral really helped with steep banks and turns.

upon re-reading your post, I rest my case.. the poor author had to use his feet for something and it made him feel like the plane had a poor design.. I say its just a poor pilot writing about something he does not have enough time in to really give a useful opinion.

Pretty much like the people who have a friends of their ex wifes cousins uncle who had a pacer 30 years ago and ground looped it after trying to teach himself to fly in it so therefore a pacer is just a flying death trap....
