    Broken rib tail repair
Hi all,  been working on the Avid some more, brought a wing up to the garage where I have some heat.  (It's supposed to be +2 F for a low tonight)  I have two broken rig tails on that wing, and so have worked on them after I ripped the fabric off.  I bought a 2' x 4' sheet of 1/4" 12 ply plywood from ACS  a while back and cut out some rib tails.  Here is how I'm fixing them.  I know Brett had a repair where he replaced the whole rib behind the rear spar, but I'm going a different way.  I built a few jigs so I can cut more tails with the table saw easy if anyone wants some.   A heat gun will soften the glue, I think they used T88 on the ribs and it does soften up with heat.  Careful cutting with a saber saw to get most of the rib out of the way, then heat and gently pry the rest off of the rib cap strips.  I am going to put a scab on each side of the rib (second picture)  that will be glued in to make it stronger than before.  (I think)  Any way, if anyone sees anything wrong, other than the messy workshop, fire away!  Jim Chuk

    P-38
    KFfan,
In the Army we carried a tiny can-opener called the P38.
A WW2 pilot told me that the P-38 was a "HOT" plane to fly, but at altitude he wrapped an extra flight jacket around his feet to keep them from freezing since there was little or no heat on them.

Lmao! Well Ed, I would not have minded a nose wheel today.. there 8 standing water on the lake, the ice is getting rotten and my damn brakes wouldn't bolt up to the new gear... it's 48 degrees and I had to get the plane off the lake but I can't pull it up on the bank where it was at.... soldotna awos said 16 gusting 20.. 1/4ing crosswind.. no brakes, axle not not as tight as they really needed to be so I have a slightly wobbly wheel.. you only live once right?? I got it on the ground in one piece but it was not fun not pretty.. it's going on the trailer and coming home tomorrow and getting set up right.

EuroFox is the non US name for Aerotrek. They changed their US name due to legal issues proposed by Kitfox.

Ask Doug, he will confirm no parts from them unless you have a serial number of an airplane to put then on.

Probably a carrier-practice landing and too heavy and fast for the tailhook!

Missed the float recall thankfully. The carb recall and 5-year rubber were a mofo.

16" wide I presume? Keep in mind the tip is trimmed length/chord wise by each builder. I know one guy who left his tips wider than the factory scribe line and another who cut his quite a bit narrower, so the plane would fit in his garage with wings folded.

[edit] Randy - I just measured the width of my KF Hoerner tips. I had cut them to 13.75" wide. So add 144" spar length and I have 157.75" L.O.A. per wing. I need to find my calculations for the wing area of my A+ vs. my KF4 w/ droops.

    Randy,
My KF Hoerner (Speedster) tips measured 16" long - I just measured them to box and mail to the buyer.
If you are looking at lift, try Catalina wings.
Optimum for speed, if you can make them, is winglets that stick straight up and give a theoretical increase in span, increasing aspect ratio and reducing drag - Just look at the modern Boeing Jets wings.
I just noticed that the Airbus 320 has triangles on the tips, like up and down winglets, but I think the Boeing engineers have them beat with the up winglets.
