I still have my father's P38. It will pass to one of my daughters on my demise. Her husband is a Army lifer with 14 years in and about to head east for the 3rd time.

I'm confused. I was on submarines not carriers (thank God).
How can a nosewheel function as a tailhook? Trying to land with an excessive headwind? I've seen a couple videos of that happening.

See if you had nosewheel you wouldn't need those spring's

    Thank you,
Yes I have shorten up the spring. And yes now I can land shorter.
I dont know the Kitfox spring. Sorry

Does the Avid spring attach the same or different than the Kitfox?

Looks like a nice plane! I would shorten that spring up so you can get a better angle of attack on the wing. You will be able to land and take off shorter if you do.

If you just drag the tail wheel or skid down the length of the runway and don't let the mains touch I think you can call it good practice

So friends, I'm back in the air!
The 3. design of the spring has passed.
With the 912 Rotax and the Speedwings it is not so easy to land on our short runway (250m). But it goes. only when I use the brakes I'm slightly off track. But I'm learning too.
Thanks for the help and greetings Martin

Then you know why I just had to get an Ercoupe - Got a photo of it under the wing of a split-tail B25, that belongs to the CAF at St. Charles, Missouri...
Yes, they were parked - at Dexter, Missouri!
    EDMO
BTW: Ercoupe flying may be fairly easy for a starting pilot, but an experienced pilot has to learn a new way of landing and forget all about what he had been doing with conventional controls! A new learning curve, driving without pedals, and landing in a crab with crosswinds!

No reason that shouldn't work. Nitpicking now, I may have chosen to continue the scabs a bit further rearward, butt them as close as possible to the spar and epoxy a few alum large head rivets on each side of the joint.

[edit] I would rough cut/shape the hanger end before gluing in place, but then, nothing looks glued yet in your pics so I assume that's your plan. Going with the white paint scheme again? I thought it looked real sharp!

I don't like square butts, I cut mine on a 45 or better. The square butt with a piece scabbard to each side should be fine though.

Jim, since I haven't built an Avid from a kit, I'm having a little trouble understanding how the new tail portion fits into the existing rib. Did you cut the existing rib vertically (90 degrees to chord line) to be able to break out the damaged piece? Does the new replacement part butt up against the cut edge of the existing rib?

Thanks for the photos, I have one broken rib  tail on my aircraft and I may have to repair it for a buyer.

Hi Ron, that is my Avid that had an oil cooler line blow on the Jabiru engine. Not the fault of the engine though. After the cockpit filled up with smoke and I thought we were on fire, I landed in the first field I could get to, and the field ended up being a few hundred feet short. The ditch and fence at the end of the field caused me to flip over. The crash bent some tubes in the fuselage and broke these two rib tails in the wing. Nothing bent or broke on me at the time, other than my wallet. Jim Chuk

PS the tails broke off just inside of the flaperon hangers. Last 1 1/2" or 2" broke off

As a kid, I thought they were the coolest airplane. Of course that was based on looks. I liked the Beech "V" tails also.

Lest we no forget, Capt Bong the highest scoring (40) US ace of WW2 drove the forked tail devil in the pacific theatre.

Dynaero MCR airplane is performing near the same, nothing new, there are other examples, blackwing is not pioneer in this technology, it´s just another all carbon composite down to the control stick and it came out lighter than anticipated.

I also want to mention that the only one who I ever heard had any type of effect by modifying the wing tip is John Miller placing Vortex generator there; he has a full report over the other side of the river (the dark side) I believe Randy also installed VG on the wing tips...

for those curious about 150hp Rotax; there is a Norwegian company who thought, regular 80hp rotax was over complicated and overkill NICE little ENGINE, so they began removing useless systems and parts to make it nicer and cleaner they came up with a pretty nice upgrade to that engine.

    Jim,

    That looks really good!
What caused them to break originally? Was it the cracking at the trailing edge and flaperon horn? Or was it inside the wing covering?

    Thanks,
    Ron

P.S. That isn't a messy shop...you weren't standing on anything or using vehicle top to hold your wing level!

I think my favorite P-38 story is of Robin Olds claiming to be the only P-38 pilot credited with a kill while both engines were flamed out! He got so excited when he spotted multiple enemy fighters that when he dropped the external fuel tanks to reduce drag and weight he forgot to switch the fuel system to internal tanks. Right as he closed in on the first guy both engines flamed out. He squeezed the trigger, got the kill, then dove to do a restart. With the next enemy now on his tail he began picking up some crazy speed. He got them restarted, but was dangerously low on altitude and very high on speed which caused problems with the aerodynamics of the P-38, reducing elevator authority, he pulled as hard as he could and pulled enough Gs that he cracked the canopy, and he barley missed hitting the dirt! I believe he went on to get another kill in that battle.

Part of the previous owner's mess I am cleaning up. To be fair, it was the ramp jockey at his A&P who lost control and drove it thru an outdoor hanger.

That was a pretty comprehensive article, thanks for posting it. My Aerotrek with all the bells is 680lb. empty. I can only imagine what a hot rod this plane would be with a 914 turbo!
