  1. dav8or added a post in a topic belly radiator

I went through the belly radiator swap on my Avid last year. I ended up with the radiator a little more than an inch below the fuselage due to the way it was mounted. First problem for most Avids on the belly mount is the lip at the bottom of the cowling. I am sure it was there to create a better low pressure area at the cowling exit but it also deflects air passing by the outside of the cowling and forces it somewhere below the radiator. The other problem is the heat from the muffler/exhaust which exits the cowling and passes straight through the new belly mounted radiator. The Kitfox may have a different setup. I have not seen one up close so I can't compare. I solved both problems at once but removing the lip and fabricating an aluminum pan that both helps the outside air stay attached to the bottom of the fuselage and pan until it passes through the radiator. The pan also keeps the exhaust heat from passing directly through the radiator and instead passes it over the top of the radiator through the gap between fuselage bottom. Exhaust heat is also allowed to spill off the sides of the pan out away from the radiator.

The pan is fastened the the lower edge of the cowling and lays on top of the radiator. There are also 2 aluminum bracts riveted between the pan and firewall to keep it in place. I folded the sides of the pan down with plans to make a scoop to go over this but may be changing cowling so have stopped development on that.

With this setup most recently with OAT around 70 F I had to tape almost half of the radiator off to get temps above 130. I currently do not have a thermostat installed but plan to put it back in. I have flown with this set up in the 90+ degree weather we get down here in South Texas last summer and never had the water temp get above 160 (that was with thermostat).

Hope this might help a little.

  3. dav8or added a post in a topic Rotax 582 getting air in the cooling system

I am still working on this one. It is possible that my old 532 did the same thing but I never noticed because I had a solid line. I only noticed on the newer 582 when I substituted a translucent line from the water pump to the coolant tank (engine inverted) where I could see the air bubbles. I have changed my plumbing around a bit and will see if that works. The other possibility is the system is pulling back air from the coolant overflow line when the engine shuts down. I have an hour or so of ground run time on the new plumbing with no overheats so I will give it a try in the air flying circles over the runway.

Might be able to find the barb fitting at a hobby shop. The threads are small and they are tough to find. I just happened to have a few.

I had considered ordering one of the Mikuni double cables but they are all too short and I didn't know the cables could be changed. I may have to revisit this option.

Little good that will do unless she is a weightlifter with an ATP rating! At least most Flight Engineers have knowledge on flying the plane.EDMO

I am thinking about making my own using bicycle brake/shifter cable parts and fabricating a lever type control under the panel somewhere.

Here's one that looks like it on Ebay.  May have to put longer cables on.

On every commercial flight I've been on in the US, if one of the pilots in the cockpit needs to leave, one of the flight attendants enters the cockpit until he/she returns.  Either the policies are different in Europe, or the weren't followed on this flight.

This is what came with my Kitfox Classic 4 kit.  It came with two shorter cables attached.  Two longer cables were included with instructions to file the Carb end swedges down to the look and size of the shorter ones and use them to replace the short ones.  It looks like a snowmobile choke (enricher) lever to me.

Kitfox part number is 49013 Choke Cable Assembly.  The longer cables are part numbers 47004 and 47018.

Just be careful Randy when you're ground handling your piece w/the young ones around.  When my son was 3, he stood right at elevator height - 'bout at his forehead.  One day while cleaning my Tcart w/him I decided to repostion it. Silly me not making sure he was clear pulled forward on a wing strut, I soon found out where he was as I heard a thud and he was soon laying in the grass wailing.  Left a lasting impression on the both of us.  One of many other experiences shared together we both reflect upon fondly and w/wide grins

Paul, if you're talking cruising speed, you're about correct.

Your SuperSport will fly circles around a SuperSTOL, while giving up very little in STOL performance.  You can operate out of a couple hundred feet.  A Just will do 100-150.  In the grand scheme of things is there really any difference?  I've yet to see a video of one of these planes doing their "vertical drop" short landing method out in the bush.  That just [sic] sounds like a formula for disaster on a gravel bar or soft field.

Having flown a Highlander (not the SuperSTOL), I wasn't impressed with the handling.  They are very lazy and Cub-like in their handling.  Nothing like the sporty feel of an Avid/Kitfox.

I've been looking at this plane ever since the STOL exhibition at Oshkosh. I was really impressed. I wonder if it's really meats the advertised performance? They tout 100, but I've seen reports of 85 to 90.

Did some more work to the Panel today.

I cut the opening for the ELT control panel and for the USB power plug.  Waiting on my ignition switches, key-switch and toggles to locate and drill for those next.

    Thanks Larry,
I didn't mean to say that they ONLY made 3-blade props for the 912 - Just that it is the ONLY ENGINE they make the 3-blade composite props for - I know they make a 2-blade also.
Yes, I know that someone makes a 3-blade plastic prop for the Cessna 208, but that's a different ballgame.
I worked in a prop shop on Constant Speed 2 and 3-blade props when going to Aviation school in Alaska.

Dave had a 2-blade Sensenich for his 912.  It didn't work very well.  Your information on 3-blade only hubs for a 912 must be incorrect.

I did a quick measurement on the hub, the center spindle locating diameter is approximately 1-23/32" with the outer 6-bolt hub is approximately a 4" bolt circle.

Cameras in the cockpit wont do any good!
If the geniuses who design planes would put a toilet, or a space for a port-a-potty in the cockpit, there would be no need for a pilot to leave the cockpit.
The FAA / TSA should make that a requirement.
They could use the money and space they saved when they eliminated the Flight Engineer from the cockpit.
Dollars are worth more than passengers until a crash!

I got smoked on that bid - and it sold for about 1/3 of new price, with 3 new blades - but did some research and learned that you could get Sensenich composite blades for your Warp Drive hub since 2009 - that was some cheap education.
Also learned from Warp Drive that there was a change in their blades in 2003, and the hub before and after is machined different, so Sensenich probably only fits the newer hubs. I only wanted the blades, and Sensenich only makes 3-blade hubs for the 912/914.
Somebody with a 912 got a real bargain!
