    Hi Mark,

Are you still working on your Bearhawk Patrol? Are you building from scratch or working from a welded kit?

    Best regards,

    Rick.

If I was using the trailer to haul or store the Avid regularly, I'd have performed some surgery on it, but I only needed it to get the Avid from California to Illinois.  Now I need it to get from Illinois to Florida, but I need to take it apart to recover it, and repair and repaint anything under the old fabric that was finished for dry California air instead of nice juicy Florida air....
Mostly, the trailer is used to haul crap from point A to point B.  Owning a trailer is even more dangerous than owning a truck.  My friends have learned I'll be happy to let them use the trailer, and I'll be happy to drive, but they are loading and unloading it!  I don't like beer, so there is no incentive for me to help...

I agree with Dusty - I put 4" long homemade steel threaded inserts into the ends of my struts for the rod ends to screw into. Mine have a 7/16 - 20 thread. I cut the ends of my tubes at 30 degrees to weld to the inserts, and added a rosette weld to each one. I also cross-drilled a witness hole 1/2" from the end of the insert.
    I would not trust a welded rod-end.

If you are going to replace your rod ends consider putting in a internal threaded plug so a male threaded rod end can be used,
This would be easy to replace when corrosion sets in and allows corrosion inhibiter to be added.
This is what I intend to do when a rebuild is due

The Sorenson trailer in Barnstormers advertises '98+' inches inside width at the rear door. He has an option that replaces the garage door style rear ramp cables on each side with a torsion bar support at the bottom hinge of the ramp. I think it's called an 'infinite hinge'.

How much are you going to warp your struts with full-length welding? I would rather just weld each end of a tube at a 30 degree angle.
I guess you could cut your struts and slide a tube inside and reweld your struts - I don't know how the strength would compare to a larger tube on the outside, but at least it should add something. I think it would be just as easy to put a tube over the outside and weld both ends, keeping your original strut length.

Wonder how much strength you would gain if you was to take a 7/8 tube .049 and rip it in half some how and weld it on the front side of each tube then glue the wood on the back of the tubing and fill the  top and bottom gab with epoxy to make it flush. Just thinking out loud here. That would be the quickest way to add strength I guess.

    TJay,
The easiest thing for you to do, is to cut your struts about 6 inches from the fuselage fitting, or from the cross tube on the wing end, and splice a larger tube onto it using the methods shown in AC43-13. I can post it if you cant find it on the FAA site.
Kitfox uses .o49 wall 1" diameter tubes for the later models. Leni and I used .058 wall tubing for scratch-builts.
The later Kitfox strut fittings were about 10" farther out on the spar than the Kitfox 1, so that may have been a reason they went to larger struts.
I am sure if you use 7/8 tube it would be plenty strong, if you don't have it now.
I think the original Kitfox 1 struts were 3/4" .035 wall, so a 7/8" .049 or .058 wall should fit over them nicely.
I found cheap rod ends on ebay for mine, but they were larger than the originals, and I had to make new spar fittings to fit them.
The rod ends are possibly the weakest part of the strut system, and take the same 1/4" bolts, so you may be better off with what you have. I am making mine because my length and angle of fuselage fittings are different.

AKflyerBob used a pair of old needle nose pliers and filed a small grove just back from the tips of the pliers to help put his in.  he was able to then grab the clip in the middle and squeeze the clip and drop it in.. I tried his way and shot the clip around the garage a few times before I got it to work for me.

If I was doing these every day I would probably buy the tool just to save on my alcohol bill    But its pretty easy once you do a couple with the screw driver.  Mike Stratman had an article on this on the CPS site.  You may search for that one.

As close to the edge as I could get it and still have a little meat left on the bone.  A well placed thumb and a few times of doing it and you can snap that clip in real easy.  Just make sure you are not as dumb as I was the first time and slip the pin in from the outside in so you have room to work on the bugger one on the outside of the piston instead of between the two..

Why do the deals have to be so darn far away from me... I would love the extended speed wing with a lot less washout.  One of these years I will build one.

Avid Mark 4 Project for sale
I collected parts for a few years and have a complete collection to build a Mark 4. The Fuselage was lightly damaged during a hard landing and repaired professionally. There is a pair of speed wings that are very poorly built, they need to be disassembled and rebuilt. I have the speed wing extension kit that I bought from Brett for 1100 bucks. I was going to rebuild the speed wing with less washout and extend it finishing off the tips with Kitfox 4 droop tips that are included. Everything is there for the airframe except a left fuel tank.. I purchased a new cowl and the mixer arms from Brett also. cowl has never been cut, still the way I got it from Airdale. There is a set of wheels, tires, and brakes from a kitfox 4 and a set from a kitfox 3. There is a brand new pair of big fat tires on the Kit fox 3 rims.

582 grey head with 150 smoh. I flew my other Avid with it on the front for a couple of hours but wasn't comfortable with it because I didn't know who or how the engine was overhauled. I was going to send it and the gear box down to Rotax Rick for a fresh overhaul when we got closer to having the airframe complete.  it ran good but I had a fresh overhauled one in the garage and I swapped it. There are 2 532 engines, 3 B boxes, 2 two blade props, A bunch of exhaust parts, mutiple carbs, lots of engine parts, Cheek radiators and all the hardware to hook them up. There is all the required guages and insturments. Builders manual included.

There is a Kitfox 4 582 motor mount, kitfox 1 bent and cut fuselage, extra control surfaces, and a bunch of other stuff.

You will need a left fuel tank ,covering material, Lexan, paint and TIME (which I don't have any to spare) to complete this project. I want to sell it all in one package. $7500.oo

I filed a notch in a small flat blade screwdriver.  That makes installing them a "snap"  No more C clips flying around the garage after that.  I have used it on many snogo and outboard engines rebuilding them as well.
