We had a beautiful evening last Friday so I decided to go somewhere new.  I plotted a route up the Knik River, past Lk George, over the pass to Twenty Mile River, out to Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet, up the Girdwood Valley and over the pass to Eagle River and out to the Knik Arm of cook Inlet.  The Foreflight is great for this and lets you easily plot the track up through the valleys and passes and then you can fly right on the track and the synthetic vision gives you a good visual of the ground ahead.  It is beautiful country back there; I thought you guys might enjoy the pictures.

Great pics!  Not a lot of landing spots in that terrain.

Change subject:  How is your tablet mounted? Describe the APP you are using. Is a subscription required?

I have a TAB 4, 7.0 and I use AVARE (it is free) but it does not have the terrain aware function.  We have similar terrain situations here in portions of the Washington Cascades.

Mark,

It is a RAM mount for the Ipad Mini, what they call the roller mount and I have the ball ends mounted to the panel and to the ipad mount.  I used the shortest arm between the balls.  it lets you position the Ipad in a lot of different ways.  The APP is ForeFlight. the basic plan with synthetic vision.  The subscription is $99 a year for US.  You also need to get a Bluetooth GPS receiver to sync to the ipad.  I got a Garmin Glo but there are others that will work.  If you get the ones with AHRS in them they will actually show your attitude on the synthetic vision screen, but those cost more.  I think the Glo was around $129. and it is clipped to the back of the RAM ipad mount with the little belt clip so you cant see it.  I plug them both into the airplane power as you can see in the pictures.  I am just getting used to using the ForeFlight and it can do a bunch of stuff.  a lot that I will never use but for planning and flying cross countries and unknown routes it is a great help.  Plus stores all the airport information for every airport, does flight plans, W&B, calculates all distances, plug in your plane info and it does your fuel, time, etc, etc.  Updates every  26 or 28 days with all the charts you want to load.  For local flying in areas you normally travel there is not much need for it but sure is nice to plan and use where you haven't been before.

Thanks Randy,

I went to the ForeFlight site and they only have software for the I-pad. Bummer...  The AVARE app for the Android OS has a lot of features, I'm still learning how to use it effectively.  The Terrain Awareness feature seems like a handy tool to have in mountainous regions.

If I can get hands on a RAM mount I'll see if it can fit the TAB-4 (or be modified).  I like the way it is presented in your cockpit.  Nice and easy to see.  I just got an armored cover for my TAB-4 and I think I could manufacture a mount to adapt fairly easily.  I have a mini machine shop so making is sometimes easier than buying.

Looks like you still have a functioning Garmin 296 on the panel also.  I just figured out how to resurrect my old Garmin GPS III.
