Is it possible to repair those dexter fuel engine primers once they start to leak around the shaft or is it a toss and replace repair solution? Mine decided to start barfing fuel around the plunger shaft tonite.Just wondering if anyone has done an O ring replace to fix this or if its possible?

  thanks Mke

I think I have an Essex - I would also be interested in a knowledgeable answer - I know some brands can be rebuilt.

Mine did that a couple of times and then quit and has been fine since.  I also wondered about repair and would be glad to hear if it is practical.

Guess the next step is to take it off and see if it is possible to pull it appart and if then what can be done. When time permits I'll get on it and report back as what's what.

I did a quick search for Dexter primer and did not come up with anything.  Is this the cheap primer that CPS used to sell with the big black knob?  Like the ones used on most snow machines?

Yup it is the one with the big black knob says primer on it, and once they leak it's a throw away. Bob Robertson of light engine left me a phone message and told me as much. I pulled the end with the fuel fittings off but couldn't get the knob off the shaft without destroying it so yes it is replacement time. And the brand name was actually Dapco  made in Dexter Michigan.Sorry for the confusion. This primer is probably the original that came ith the plane.

I got a couple of them.  I keep an extra one in the tool bag in the plane.  A buddy has a shop so getting them at dealer cost makes them even cheaper than cheap.  I think it would be 10 bucks and 10 minutes well spent at every condition inspection to replace these.  The one time I got stuck at -30 with a primer that did not work made me put one in the tool bag.

I have been chasing a rich running engine and found that the primer pump was leaking a small amount of fuel into the carb causing rich mixture.  At this point I have installed a new pump that I had on the shelf but may go with the Bing choke/starting carb/enricher.  Anyone else have this happen on their plane or snow machine?

Those little primers are notorious for doing this.

He Bing enrichener function works very well in most circumstances for starting.

Providing they don't leak, I think it's hard to beat the primer for cold starting in the wintertime on a 2 stroke.  Just my opinion.  Jim Chuk

Jim I am with you on the ease of starting, I had the extra one to put on my Jabiru due to hard winter starts.  I would like to find something of better quality that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars.

Mine is leaking too. They're less than $25 bucks; so what the hell. But I was wondering, might be worth a shot to introduce something into it to rejuvenate the seals?  I'll give it a try before discarding the old one.
