  1. General Question:

Is it possible to become a flight instructor (i.e. provide log book instructed flight time) just by amassing a large number of hours in a type of aircraft?  I don't see anything in the FAR's on this, though have heard recently that this could be the case (by a person conducting the training).  Seems like you would need to go through the full CFI wickets to me vice grabbing a ton of hours (as there is much more to instruction than logging hours) or am I missing some provision somewhere?

  3. Haven't seen Smitty since his bird left.  Yep, it was tough seeing it sit out and rust away like that.  Glad you were able to save it.  Mine will be hangered down at NY64 once we get some of the initial flights off.

Actually there used to be three Foxes up there at one time, your Mangy, a Model IV Speedster and a Model II.

  4. Thanks Doug.  Trailered it up to the airport yesterday (1F2).  Winds were too punchy to fly, but I was able to do some high speed taxi checks and a couple of crow hops.  She handled fabulously.

Thanks to everyone for all the help along the way (from the initial build process all the way through to trailer set-up... which trailered great by the way).  You guys have been a fabulous resource!  Here are a few pics from yesterday.  I included the hangar shot for Av4r3400... original home of his project bird (a.k.a Mangy).

  5. Doors came out great: (Model IV doors on a Model III with wide body kit).  Very happy with them.  Thanks for all the assistance with this (hopefully last) project on this build.  Going to try again this weekend for the first flight.

  6. Thanks Doug:

Just so that I have this correct, I have a 1/2" overlap everywhere except the top edge (next to the fabric) and also the windshield aluminum molding?  I had originally anticipated it would lay over the aluminum as well (as it is about even with the cowling edges etc.

Thanks for the heads-up cutting the Plexi (actually I am not sure if it is Lexan or Plexi, still in the box from Kitfox.

  7. Going to skin my doors tomorrow.  These are the 3 piece Model IV doors (plexi on upper and lower and a fiberglass band in the midde).

Any suggestions on how to best go about this?

I was thinking cleko-ing the upper and lower portions and then place the fiberglass on top with a few cleco's then rivet the whole deal?

    Any other idea's??

  8. Having an issue with my DC voltage creeping up with engine at full power.  Creeps up to 16V, holds at 14,5 at 5,500 RPM and below.

I am assuming a faulty voltage regulator (I have the one that came with the Kitfox kit,)

I was thinking of using this one.  I had one on my PPC and it was rock solid.  Any reason why not to or other suggestions?

  9. Thanks for the feedback on this.  Yep, checked the grounds all good.  Direct short through the starter for some reason.  Real bugger as it has only two hours on it (about 5 starts) (though it is 20 years old).

Hey Ed, by chance are you selling the complete 532 package?  We have a new guy in our EAA chapter with an Avid looking for a good used 503 or 532.

  10. Today was to be the first flight, but alas... our starter has crapped out. Dead short internal (or maybe just seized up internal).

I was dreading this scenario when I installed the engine, and saw how it was buried in the firewall with no external access.

No access without pulling the engine or am I missing something?  Would rather find a way without pulling everything apart again.

Are these a rebuildable item, or basically disposable?

Any good sources for a new one?  I see a full kit at leading edge airfoils, however only need the starter.   Pricey buggers.

Frustrating day and such incredible weather.  Maybe next week.

  11. What about tongue weight with this type Doug?

    EDMO

Mine has been fine.  My trailer is a bit longer and my CG is forward of the main axle.  No pull issues at all.  That was before the wing install, which should now be even better with the forward movement of the CG.

  12. Plane is finally finished and ready to load on the trailer.  Appears to be some real tail wheel weight now with the wings on and folded.

This is a converted boat trailer, loading tail first like many you have seen here.

Question (or maybe a poll); do these typically load with the wings folded during loaded or open (closing once on the trailer)?

  13. I am looking at door latch options.  Primarily the one Murle Williams offer,s and the one that Kitfox currently offers (the metal butterfly latch).

Anyone have experience with any of these (or other suggestions)?  I also have the wide body kit installed.

  14. Question on data plate locations.

I actually posses two data plates.  One which is rather large (squarish) and contains builder name, address, model, serial number, weights etc (the standard plate you see), plus a small one I received with my EAA labeling and registration package (small rectangular and only have builder name, model and serial number).

Question is:  Are both of these required?

What location is typically used for installation? The only flat spots I see would be the rudder tube access plates under the horizontal stab or the dash.

Or... is the location DAR specific?

  15. I have seen a few pics where I notice much beefier tailwheel springs than I have on my Model III.  Mine are the original two leaf version.

Any concerns with these smaller springs that I should be aware of?

  16. By chance do any of you have a PDF (or a link) to a PDF from which I can make a scale for my Kitfox Model III wing tank sight glass?

I remeber seeing a European site with one, but for some reason cannot locate it anymore.

Looking too make a fuel indicating plate to place behind the tube.
