  1. What you chargen for a set?

    TJay,

I tried heating the plastic with a hot air gun without much success and making rejects in the process.  I ended up with 2 sets.  I promised EdMO a set for his generous help with my build so I don't have any extras. Sorry

    Mike

What kind of plastic are you using for these? Look very nice.

  2. I purchased the polystyrene 0.040 sheets from IASCO.  The mold was made with coil stock aluminum used in house construction.  The hole on the side of the box is for the shop vac.   It's a fairly easy process, screw plastic sheet to the frame, place under the broiler in your very understanding wife's oven until it just starts to smoke, then press frame w/ plastic sheet over the mold with the shop vac on and wait 3 min until it cools before shutting the vacuum off and pulling the part.  There are multiple videos on YouTube showing the process.

  3. Made some vacuum formed rudder cable fairings today that are long enough to clear the cable during full rudder deflection.  Notice the store bought fairing in the foreground.  The paint booth is finished and after attaching these fairing, I get to start painting this week.

  4. I used a Harbour Freight 10 X 17 portable garage as a paint booth.  It was tight but I was able to get it done.  I did all the prep work and sanding outside. The worst problem was getting adequate lighting set up so I could see how much material I was applying.  As far as cost, it was just a little more than what I had figured for using temp walls and plastic to make a booth in the shop and clean up afterwards was much easier than trying to clean up the overspray in the shop. I used a 24" box fan and furnace filters for the vent system.

Don't tell my wife, but I was going to wrap the enough Christmas icicle lights around the perimeter of the booth until I achieved the desired quantity of lighting. Shhhh......

  5. Thanks. I have the wings and fuselage on rotisseries and I'm hoping that might help.

  6. It looks like I'm ready to start painting and only 3 months behind schedule. The plan was to build a larger booth in the unconditioned section of my shop and paint last fall on nice days. Well....it's cold here in SE MO and I need to build a smaller one in the heated section that's just 20'x36'. I will still need a portion of this area to do prep work, sand, layout Etc. Would a 10'x20' work?

    Thanks,
    Mike

  7. Nice!   My wife grew up in New Ulm and really misses the snow.

Mike,  Hope you are on high ground as the Old Miss crests down your way.  We are surrounded by flood waters after getting a foot of rain in 3 days.  Folks all around leaving their homes while others are sandbagging and waiting for record river crests to hit.  Lots of highways under water from here to both Springfields, and some levees have been topped.  That would have been 10 feet of snow - and we don't like too much water or snow.  My house is 460 msl, so staying dry!

Thanks for the concern. We're definitely high and dry here in Jackson.  It's a different story just to the east and the predicted crest of the MS is going to be a record breaker.  KFVS showed a video of Saberliner in Perryville, 30 miles north, moving their planes from the airport to higher ground on the highway using tractors as tugs.
