Not to mention the Rotax 582 can't power all those instruments and lights.  I need to switch to LED lights for sure.

I have big plans for this airplane without spending a ton of money.  I need to pay off the new IVO IFA first.

What kind of cruise speeds should I achieve with this new prop?   It's 72" 3 blade.  I may also need new tires, the prop barely clears the ground with the tail up.

I'm also very interested in a nose wheel.  I am a tail wheel "purist".  I love the tail wheel but my girlfriend wants to fly some and the tailwheel is a bit much for her to learn on.

Hey all, after some serious thinking I have decided to greatly downsize and redesign my panel.  Curious on a few things.

First off, what is my old stuff worth?  Other then the turn coordinator which had a burnt up bearing it all works.

I'm looking to get an inpanel mount for my Ipad 2 and mount my stratus on the top of the dash.  Eliminate all the vacuum/gyro gauges and associated wiring and tubing.  Should help save alot of weight.

This should also greatly reduce the load on my poor ole 582, which is struggling to maintain 10 volts in the air.

No updates yet, the prop IVO sent me was severely damaged.  I had to ship it back, just got the new one.  It will be installed this week.

A new set of throttle cables helped out with the idling.  I am now idling smooth at 2,000 RPM WITHOUT the prop turning!  I like it, you can feel the engine appreciates it.

I'm going to have to get larger tires to clear the new prop.  The 600x6 tires and Grove gear doesn't allow any clearance with the tail up.  Like 3-4 inches I think.

I just dropped the cables of at the local A&P's shop, he's going to use the longest one and then add 3/8 to 1/2 an inch on the new cables.  One of them was about 4 inches shorter then the other and travel was really limited

We got the plane in the air today for 1.6 hours.  Other then poor climb performance we did get off the ground without any serious doubt of safety.

I think this new IVO prop will help out tremendously with the climb issues.

Next wednesday the clutch and the new throttle cables are being installed.

I took the carbs off today along with the entire throttle system with our local A&P Rotax 2-Stroke expert and he immediately noticed the problem.  For starters the 2 throttle cables are 2 different lengths and the longest cable is still 1/2" short.  They look like some rigged up Suzuki clutch cables with the fittings soldered on the end, definitely rigged by the previous owner.

We are going to fly tomorrow because it does not affect top end performance and we need to check a few things but once we land we are going to make some new cables and see if we can't get the idle down to 2,000 or a little lower.  we will also be installing the clutch that showed up today..

Where I have the cables set at now show about 3 threads on the top of the carb.  It won't allow the piston to drop completely, you are correct.  If I try to adjust the cables down anymore the piston will not move up far enough to clear the intake cylinder completely.

I'm going to check the cables, they don't seem to have any sticking issues but I'm going to double check them.  Perhaps that are too short?

I asked IVO about the prop pitch and they told me the standard pitch works much better then the hi pitch so thats what i ordered.

I just replaced all my plastic snap clamps with the metal work clamps you have in your picture. I was also at an auto store last week and saw miniature t clamps. I love t clamps, much better then the work gear style. Im with you though, I have been finding alot of worn out clamps on my airplane and I had one break last week

I ordered my UL 72" IVO IFA and the RK400 clutch.  Should have the parts in about 2 weeks.  I'm excited.  I hope it makes a big difference over the GSC and I'm really excited about this clutch.

I just replaced the the OEM 55 idle jet with a 45 idle jet.  My idle EGT's went from 800ish to 950-1000.  I don't think I am running too rich at idle.  With the throttle pulled all the way to idle the RPM's will only drop to 2,600 or so.  The idle stop screw doesn't seemt to make a difference anymore

I'm still playing with it though.  I'll do some more tweaking in the next few days

    poor mans way.

I took the K&N filter off and opened the throttle up fully, I then align the two pistons in the carb exactly using marks on the pistons and walls.

I then ensure that they both begin opening and closing at the same time, I also make sure that they move in unisen.

I adjust the idle air screws so they are even against the pistons.

I start the engine and let it warm, i check the EGT difference between the 2 cylinders and and adjust the idle screw until they are equal.

Seems to work well enough, atleast until I can afford a CarbMate

Guess I'll try leaning it out some more and adjusting the idle.  My idle EGT's are 1,000 degrees.  I hate for them to go too much higher but I suppose the engine is not under load at that point anyways

My plane went from an 80+ mph cruise to a 90-95 mph cruise with the change from my Warp Drive to my IVO Med. IFA.

2 or 3-Blade and what length?  I'm topping out at 75-80mph in my KFIV with the 68" GSC 3-Blade

I've also been working on streamlining some things.  I got some StolSpeed VG's.  Smaller then I expected them to be for sure but I got enought to do the wing and the tail.  When I get more time in the plane and record some stall speeds, ect. I will install them and do a comparison

the airplane runs smooth at 6,200-6,600.  It does not run smooth below 2,600 or so.  I was told that this is probably caused by the wood prop.  I had our local A&P take a look at the prop yesterday, he thought everything looked good, including the space in between the spacer blocks.  Might be the size of the prop causing it not to idle any lower.  Too much prop for that little engine

I may also try backing off the idle mixture screw just a little.  What do you guys feel is a safe EGT at idle?

as soon as my trailer sells a clutch will be on the way.  I don't think the prop is balanced enough to spin any lower, it starts to vibrate pretty good at lower rpms.  <2,600

Finally got my freakin jets in today.

I installed the 165 main jet and a 45 idle jet.  holy crap what a difference.

the engine idles smooth down to 2,500 (was 3,100RPM idle before)

the top end holds hard at 6,200RPM static and 1,100f EGT's with good cylinder temps.

Had to do some poor man's syncing on the carbs but I think I have them very close.  Next we need to fly it, the weather was awful today.

    I like it, lol.

And to the last post. I think if I lost 10 to 15lbs my plane would feel quite different in the air. I'm looking to upgrade to 21" tires, so weight is a concern since my Kitfox already weighs a bit much. 628 empty

Yea, might want to see if anyone else carries these.  I'm sure they do.  With our new runway extension I don't think the airport will have the budget for MOGAS tanks so I'm looking for something like this also. I'm sick of carrying 5 gallons cans, I spilled premix all over myself today when I slipped a little on the ladder

    My instructor 6'3" and 235lbs

We both fit, doesn't mean we will get off the ground safely in my Kitfox IV.

I'm hangared in Mountain City, TN.  It's a bit of a drive, 4 hours or so I think but if your ever up this way feel free to hit me up and I can show you what the KF IV feels like

This is it.  Although I remember him telling me he paid around $150 for it in store.

If you look at the different pictures of the caddy you will see a white cap on top, in the center of the white cap is 1/8 NPT threads, you can screw in and seal up a regular male air-line fitting.  Make sure it is sealed good.  Hook up an airline with lower pressure 3-7 psi I think.  Works awesome.  If you have a store locally I would recommend checking on a price with them, the website price seems awfully high

Would be nice if they told you that on the website, haha

Sounds good, I'll do that.  I told a guy flying a KingAir 350 that my airplane had a 2-stroke 64HP engine.  His eyes got huge and he said I had a death wish.  It was kind of funny.  Here in NC 2-strokes are looked down on pretty heavy, I haven't made too many friends and no one will fly with me.

A 4 stroke would be nice

I went to Virginia Highlands airport to take a wing off an RV-6 and saw an interesting fuel caddy.  Apparently they can be purchased at Northern Tool, this one had an air line fitting so you could simply attatch an air line to pressurize it, pull the handle up to your fuel tank and pull the trigger.  It's on wheels and is a good size, 20Gallons I think.

I personally use the Nflight cam.  Plugs into the audio jacks so I can hear all the radio and cabin conversations during the flight, 180 degree wide angle lens and 1080P with adjustable frame rates up to 60fps.  Lots of options and adjustability.

Looks like Nflightcam has now switched to the GoPro, I have the Contor +.  Actually I have 2 and I usually do an outside shot and an inside shot.  Makes for some cool autorotations in helicopters
