    Leni,

Tell me more about that experience so I don't make the same mistake.

    Knik Glacier Alaska
Took some nice pic's of the glacier on 6/29/13.  I definitely feel small and vulnerable when approaching the glacier.

    Matanuska River Pics
Decided to take a stroll last night about 9:00.  Took pictures of the Matanuska Valley on the way.  Enjoy.

Randy, Leni,  strange wind up in that valley.  No indication of wind on the ground but at 2000 ft I was doing 105 up the valley, 56 back.  Definitely a dangerous place if one does not plan that trip at a safe time.

    Upgrade Brakes
I accidently posted this topic under close calls and dumb stunts.  Sorry.  I just need input about the simplest braking upgrade I can do to my AVID.  I have the original brakes that came with it in 1990.  The pads are only on one side of the disc.

    Thanks

  5. lv2plyguitar added a post in a topic incremental flaperon control lever for my Model 2 Kitfox.

My limited experience is that if I use no flaps on landing the tail wants to lay low and if I am slow enough my tail wheel touches first.  I don't like that.  The flaps help keep the nose down and the tail up at slower speeds.

    Hose clamp problems
I have been having hose clamp issues.  The first problem was a hose clamp on the upper nipple for the rotary valve shaft housing.  The clamp completely broke.  Later the nipple broke off when the end smacked the motor mount.  I pulled the engine to fix.  Upon inspection I noticed that the bottom hose clamp for the rotary valve shaft housing was badly damaged and about to break as well (the bottom was not hitting anything).  What are you experiences with this and what type of clamps should I use.  The type of clamp I use is similar to the picture I have attached.

    Thanks for your help.

  7. lv2plyguitar added a post in a topic Where did you fly today?

As soon as I get my bird in the air I am ready.  Had to fix some stuff.  Leni, what type of hose clamps should I use for the rotary valves inlet and outlet (top and bottom of engine).  Was inspecting and noticed that the bottom hose clamp was about to break after the top one had already broke.

Is there any recommendation on changing the Rotary Valve oil?  If so how often.

Where do you get a motor mount for a 912 that fits the AVID Flyer.

So Leni are you recommending a 50:1 mixture?  That would be 16 ounces per 6 gallons.

AVID Flyer STOL With Floats & Skids
Just for my information, what do you think my plane is worth.  I have a 1988 kit completed in 2013.  Certificate of airworthiness, original fiberglass and gelcoat floats, skis, wide gear with 21" tires, Garmin 296, mgl avionics instruments. Also have the original factory cargo pod.  It has the HH struts and mark IV cowl.  Rotax 582 with 58 total hours.  The plane and motor have a total time of 58 hrs.

    Thanks for your input.

AVID Flyer With 582 and Floats
I have the original AVID gel coat floats that are under 200 lbs.  I am wondering with the 582 what kind of performance I can expect.  Can you haul two people with floats?  What is the general take off distance with no head wind.  What can I expect the cruise speed to be.  The dry weight of my plane is 568.  It has the 29' 10" STOL wing.

    Thanks

  15. lv2plyguitar added a post in a topic Rotax 582 Greyhead Problem

The part I am talking about is the brass cup on top of the carb that the throttle cable rest in.  The throttle cable, even with all slack taken out comes out of the top and rests on the lip of the brass cup.

    Rotax 582 Greyhead Problem
I had previously posted on this forum an issue with my engine inadvertently reving up 600 rpms without giving it throttle.  Last night I found a strange problem that I do not know how to deal with.

The same problem started again.  The engine reved from idle 2000 rpm to 2600 rpm.  After a minute it reved from 2600 rpm to 3200.  I pulled the cowling and found the strangest thing going on.  The carb piston is raising on its own and causing the cable housing on top of the carb to set on top of the brass seat therefore not letting the carb piston to go back down.  When one carb does it the rpm goes up 600 rpm.  When both do it the rpm goes up to 3200.

Both carb boots are tight and brand new.  The egts run normal as well as the engine temp.  It seems to run rough at idle.  I am wondering if the jerking action of the engine would create enough force to cause the carb piston to raise up and down on its own.

    Fly In Fishing Alaska
    Leni, Randy, Anybody.

No that I added the cargo pod to my plane, it is anxious to have something in it.  Where are the best fly in salmon fishing areas?

    Thanks

    Down Drafts & Micro Bursts
    Leni, Randy,

Is there anyway to forsee a down draft or micro burst before flying into it.  When are weather conditions most likely to produce such conditions?   Your experience with the semi is something I never want to encounter.

If the engine is running normal at all levels it sounds to me like some characteristics with the airflow over the wing.  Like Leni indicated something with the air.  I found out the other day that even an AVID flying slightly above and in front of my AVID can be catastrophic to lift.

    AVID Flyer Gas Caps
My gas cap project turned out so nice I wanted to post it in the general box.   Zero fuel on the wings.  I ordered the caps from Aircraft spruce and they are bonded and screwed to the fiberglass tank.  The ram air was added because they are unvented.  I tapped and dyed the hole and tube.  Screwed it in with resin on the threads.  My gas necks were inboard next to the lexan.  That was a disaster so I moved them outboard where they should be.

  22. lv2plyguitar added a post in a topic Picture of New Gas Caps & Installed Org. AVID Cargo Pod

Go to aircraft spruce and type in part # 05-01390.  simple install.  Drill hole.  Remove aircraft covering down to fiberglass about an inch or two around hole.  Apply resin to lip of filler neck and resin and screw to the tank.  Then cloth and resin over the neck lip and then apply covering.  You must use the fuel proof resin available at CAC plastics.  Forgot to add that I tapped and dyes the cap for the ram air.  Apply resin to threads to get a good seal.  Used the alumimum weld stick with a propane bottle to weld 1/4 inch hose inside of 3/8.  The 3/8 gave me more material to put threads on to screw it into the top of cap.

Picture of New Gas Caps & Installed Org. AVID Cargo Pod
I moved my gas caps from inboard to outboard on the fuel tanks and replaced all the lexan.  What a mess having the fill necks next to the lexan.
Not a drop of gas is on the wings even after 30 to 50 degree turns.

Also installed the original AVID made cargo pod manufactured in the early 90's.
