Just found the article.  With the fog we had in Florida this morning, no way that plane was landing successfully.  Sounds like they lost it on the missed approach.  If they tried it VFR, well, stupid hurts sometimes.

Very very nice plane, I looked at the certified version at the Reno races this year.  I didn't even kick the tires though - I figured even that was too expensive for my budget!
LT was the kit version, E1000 is the certified  version.

That's the same prop I have on my Avid - with a 582 and a 'B' box.  Seemed to work fine when it was flying.

  4. marksires added a post in a topic My latest excuse for not having time to work on the plane.

I keep watching Ebay, but haven't seen one to buy yet.  I just don't need one often enough to justify it.  Once I build the new hangar, it probably wouldn't get used again.  So I'll pay the rental for that.  The man lift I need I'll keep watching though, that could be handy for a lot of things.  The sidewalls on the new hangar will be 18'.  I need a 14' clear opening to get my 5th wheel camper in (justification for wife), so I need a 16' door to get a 14' clear opening, and to get the 16' door, you have to have 18' sidewalls.  Like maintenance costs, one thing leads to another......

  5. marksires added a post in a topic 100 LB TURKEY

That sounds about right.  We have lots of mosquitos here in Florida, but they aren't that big of a problem.  They have all year to get their business done, so they aren't in a hurry and don't eat too much because of the heat.  Those northern mosquitos are vicious - they know they only have a couple of weeks to get busy, and they have to get big to muscle out the competition.  I'm pretty sure a group of those Wisconsin mosquitos at Oshkosh can carry off a cow to a place where they can drain it in peace.........

Nice!  I'm getting ready to build a second hangar, wish I could twitch my nose and have that forklift here, the rental on those is ridiculous.

This is why I have no sympathy for farmers anymore.  Your office is more comfortable and has a better view than mine!  When I was working on a farm, I had to drive an 'no cab' tractor.  The farmer got the one with heat/air, his son got the one with heat, I got the one that was left  I remember once around thanksgiving I came in for lunch, and despite having long underwear, insulated coveralls, 2 pairs of insulated socks, sweatshirt, the hat/mask bank robbers seem to like, and two pair of gloves I still had to sit on the tractor after I stopped it for about 5 minutes before I could move my legs they were so d*mn cold....

You can thank me Joey.  I was there all last week (Stockton).  I was also there the last time it snowed in Sacramento.  If you have a cold/wet snap, you can pretty much figure I'm there....

  10. marksires added a post in a topic LED SHOP LIGHTS

Those are all definite benefits of LED's Ed, no question.  There are advantages to LED's, not arguing that, but when switching from flourescent to LED's, don't expect a big savings in energy.  If you want the light density available from T5's (say for a paint booth), that isn't available in LED's yet, unless you want to spend some serious money.  The other advantage for LEDs is most of the fixtures are dimmable now.  Flourescents can't do that (for the most part).
BTW - your 4' T8's should put out 2875 Lumens per 4' bulb, and consume 32 watts each.  About the same efficiency as T5's (90 Lumens per watt) , but the total output is lower per bulb.  If I was putting up new fixtures, I'd seriously consider LED's, but I wouldn't rip out working T8 fixtures to replace them, unless changing the bulbs every couple of years is really difficult.  The payback just isn't there except on an industrial scale.
In the new hangar I'm building, I'm probably going to put T5 fixtures in.  The ceilings will be 18' to 20' high, and the extra light output will be a big advantage, as well as costing a lot less.  To get a 19,000 Lumen LED fixture is $249, a T5 fixture with bulbs is about $100  Since I need about 10, that adds up!

    Ed,
No, the T5's are 4'.  Each Bulb puts out 4800 Lumens, the two LED's in the FEIT fixture combine for a total of 3700 Lumens - 1650 Lumens each if they are equal.
A 4 bulb T5 fixture will consume 216 watts, but put out 19,200 Lumens.  It would take 5 of the FEIT fixtures to put out 18,500 Lumens, consuming 190 Watts in the process.  Lumen is a measure of how much light is produced, Kelvin is a measure of the color or 'temperature' of the light produced.  The higher the Kelvin value, the whiter/bluer the light is.
LED's always advertise their efficiency compared to incandescent bulbs, and compared to them they are WAY more efficient - a 60 watt equivalent uses about 10 watts, so 600% more efficient.  Compared to T5 flourescents, they are only 10% more efficient.  They do have a longer expected life, so not changing bulbs is a plus, although T5's advertise between 10-20,000 hours depending on whose ad you believe.  A T5 4 bulb fixture with bulbs isn't much cheaper than the 5 FEIT fixtures either, although wiring 5 fixtures versus wiring 1 fixture probably costs a little more.
In a previous life I was an accountant, so bear with me! (and a previous life before that I was a Southern Baptist preacher, but fortunately I grew out of that!)

Math isn't quite right Ed.  LED's might draw 1/10th of an incandescent, but they aren't really much more efficient than T5 flourescents.  The ones shown above are 3700 Lumens and draw 38 watts (4000Kelvin temp/color).  A T5 Flourescent bulb draws 54 watts and puts out 4800 Lumens (5000Kelvin temp/color), so the LED is only about 10% more efficient.

4,000 hour total time 150??? I didn't think any existed anymore with less than 10,000 hours!  That is a good find.  I think Ed missed the 600 hour SMOH on the engine, it has a ways to go before TBO.
It may not be an Avid, but at least the cabin is as small

    Knuckledragger,
I offered to help, but it sounds like you have more experience with forum software.  While I've been developing and supporting software for 30+ years, I never delved into forums much.  I'd be happy to bow out and let you have a crack at it!

  17. marksires added a post in a topic Introduction Project Desciption

    Kenneth,
Theoretically yes, but if there is any fretting that rubs down to the carbon, or your layup is a little dry it can bite you where you can least afford it.  The fiberglass layer on the outside is one method, just remember that fiberglass layer is just there for insulation, it does not add any strength to the layup.  The carbon is stiffer than the fiberglass, so it is carrying all the load.  It's not a major issue if you are aware and prepare for it.
I just always post the warning because if you are used to working with fiberglass, it isn't something you think about.

Make sure the carbon is isolated from any metal structure - unlike fiberglass, it will cause differential metal corrosion if the carbon is in direct contact with metal.

Guilty.  I'm getting ready to build my 2nd hangar......
My best friend in Illinois said it best.  I was helping him on the farm, and when we were done we couldn't fit the equipment in the shed anymore.  I said I'd have to come back and help him clean it out.  He said "Nope, just time to build another shed.  It's the kids and auctioneers job to clean em out".

If you are using an older version of Internet Destroyer from Microsoft, it doesn't support the 360 stuff very well.  It works great in chrome - is that the 360fly camera, or a different one?

    Jim,
Just leave all that nasty white stuff up there when you come south, we don't want it!
Never was a hunter, but enjoy shooting.  Hunting just looks like too much work for me.  I'm of the same opinion about fishing.  Floating around a lake in a boat is fine, but if one of those stupid fish get on the line, then it turns into work. If you do catch it, then you have to clean it, and that is really work!
I'll buy my meat at the grocery store where no animals are harmed! (Actual quote from some genius ranting about hunting)

Florida has no requirements I'm aware of.  I have it anyway, so I've never checked.
No registration requirement in Florida either, so I don't know how they'd enforce it if there was one.

Hey Ed, don't mess up the plans I'm hatching to kidnap Jim and drag him to North Florida this winter.....  His wife won't miss him for a week or two I'm sure! :-)
I'm even working on plans for a new hangar so he'll have plenty of room to work.  Of course, all the locks will be on the outside of the doors!
