    NEWBIES - NEWBIES ! #4 HERE - No wonder why I'M broke !

Just like airplanes - got to keep trying until you get one that flys good!!!

    Leni,
This may sound dumb coming from an Alaska pilot: All that I flew up there had lights on as required - What if your plane doesnt have lights? Can you fly in Alaska without lights? (legally, that is) I'm sure I saw J3s flying without lights.
Does it just require lights on - if you have lights? What about Canada?
Herman, you probably know if you need a transponder to fly across Canada.

If it is convenient for me, I would go and take a look and get some specs on the performance. Any time you look at something you further your knowledge. If it does not suit you, then you will have more knowledge when you look at the next one. You never know what you may learn by looking - far cheaper than making a bad purchase, IMO.
Ask a lot of questions about how it was built/modified, who built it, what is the history of it, who did engine/redrive, etc.
I look at homebuilts any time I am invited if possible, even if it is a type that I would not want to own. Keeps me interested and believe it hones my inspection skills too. Sometimes a friend who goes with me will spot things I miss. All educational and fun.
Soobs are dependable and last a long time with little maintenance or repairs.

Yes, I have seen welds that scare me on older planes - and they have been flying for 50 to 80 years now.
Every time I get a little worried about my Kitfox or my designs, I go down to the basement and watch a video of the old contraptions that men used to fly in - I come away a lot more confident in what we are doing today.
Anything can break, and Everything will deteriorate if not maintained - Inspections and maintenance are the most important lifesavers we have. I fly with MIG-welded airframes, and some of the old not-so-perfect welds on antiques, and none of them have broken unless the pilot hit something with them.

    Doug, or anyone,
I looked at the video of the Raven clone - Want to know what the gizmo is on top of IP where compass usually sets. Best I could make out was a round instrument with a small green and small red dot with some kind of scale above the dots.
    Watizzit? Prices?

The biggest fault I found with the design books is that they go from Spam cans to bigger Spam cans to Supersonic - Not much mention of a J3 or Stearman -Hardly what one needs for slow, cheap (relative term) homebuilts. Still, there are some never-changing aerodynamics in them.

Not disagreeing with you on that. However, my aero-engineering design books did not take into account the large amount of washout that these planes have. Eliminating that washout could change stall characteristics with forward sweep. Sort of unknown territory there.
If I was building mine from scratch again, I would only have 1/2 inch of washout, and I would move the crossover tubes forward unless I found a reason that it wouldnt be feasable. Like changing the location of the lower pivot point. Any mod is like opening a new can of worms.
Still, the LE extension gives more lift benefit than just sweeping forward.

Sure would like to know weight of the corvair - believe it is heavier than the Soob, especially if you have a redrive.
And probably longer too - need to have it right at firewall.
Guess you know about the mod for a 5th main bearing they say is needed?
If you need farther forward CG, and about 8 more square feet of wing, look at my post on extended leading edges, and photos of mine, in Avidfoxflyers Hanger.
Wishing you success on your build. Lots more work than just a kit.

EDIT: Looking back at some of your posts - swinging wings forward can cause tip stalls - better to extend leading edges, and get more lift from extra wing area, IMO.

  9. EDMO added a post in a topic TINTED WINDSHEILD QUESTIONS

Just for info: I found the specs on the light bronze tinted Lexan - Light transmission is 88%.
Dont know what the gray (smoke), or light green tint transmission is, but any vendor should have specs on it.
My Dark Bronze Plexiglas sunroof material gives Light (UV) BLOCKAGE of 76 or 88% depending on tint used.
Probably about the same for Dark Green, or other dark transparencies?
AND, TO CORRECT my mistake earlier: Grainger does NOT have tinted plastics. sorry about that.
I found CADILLAC PLASTICS online, but there should be a local vendor who can save you shipping.

Agree - Welding can be either good or bad - Best to know your welder.
MINE IS BEING O/A WELDED at an FAA certified repair station. The welder there looked at the welds on my other factory-welded KF and did not care much for them.
I also had TIG welding done by an Air Force Welding Inspector at Boeing. He says that MIG welding, like Kitfox/Avid makes four different metals in parts of the weld, and would not have approved the process for Boeing.
So much for that, and sure that it can be debated a lot by folks who know welding better than I do. I can arc-weld for a machine shop, but wouldnt fly anything I welded - Would be too heavy to fly anyway. OOPS, FORGOT - Doctors told me to sell my welder before I lost another kidney to cancer !!!
BEST to have a good inspection on anything you buy or fly.
BTW: Havent seen any Soobs with floats before - Thought it was too heavy. Got mine off of a Pelican which was too heavy when put on floats with the Soob. I don't fly on floats or over water - CANT SWIM ! Rivers here drying up anyway.

How about a Raven that Airdale took in and did a stretch on it, and other mods? Any way to check with Brett?
As long as it is airworthy, I wouldn't care if it was Avid, Kitfox, Raven, Airdale, or Bastard.

If you dont get an answer on this, its probably because the right people have not noticed it here = go to AvidFoxFlyers General Hanger, and post on the Airdale post - You will get a response, or at least see the new phone numbers for Airdale - Bret, who has moved.
We have members flying this model, and 2 or 3 of us are flying Soobs.

QUESTION: My flying friend has another brand of land-use GPS and he says it wont work in his plane.
I have a Garmin Nuvi and fly lots of roads - will it work, or does it need an antenna in a plane?
I like to have it to get around on the ground. Havent tried it yet in a plane.

    Doug,
Will you please measure the thickness of the seals and post it?
In case someone finds a cheaper substitute.
We "po-folks" cant afford a MercedeZ.........

  17. EDMO added a post in a topic need pictures of transponder antenna

I hate to see anyone ask a good question, and not get at least one answer.
I am sorry, but I do not have any info on them. I wish someone could help you.
Maybe you could find something on the internet, Aircraft Spruce, AC43-13, or some manufacturer of antennas.
I have an old transponder stored away, but dont plan to use one since I'm not crossing Canada, or flying into a TCA anymore.

Just got to ask: How much is an overhaul with replaced crank?
What about a 912 - How often and how much?
Yes, Mike's plane(?) trike, was the Arctic Sparrow.

    Thanks Randy,
I believe that the Dodge Colt starter, or some other was listed in one of my alternative engines books.
Yes, it turns opposite, thats why it is behind flywheel, and it is supposed to be lighter than mine.
Dont know if mine is going to clear cowling, so looking for ways to change it.

Sounds like glassing would be good protection from the elements. However, the weak point would still be just forward of the glassing. Believe you could do better by either the metal, and epoxy the edges, or extend the glassing up the rib for about 8 inches from tip of hanger.

    SUBY STARTER S
wHAT KIND of starters are you using on the EA81? How is it wired?
I have the original geared Soob starter on mine extending forward from the ring gear - mine has the bendix solinoid on it.
QUESTION: with this setup, do I still need a starter relay/solinoid, or just the original wired to the ignition switch?

I knew Mike too - He sure didnt baby his rotax - set some altitude records before he was killed in a crash.
Of course he had an excellent maintence shop at Birchwood.

    PTI and CERTIFIED FINISHES
Been reading in Spruce - PTI say their Polyurethane has no isocyanates in it - However, I'll bet their catalyst does!
Wonder if their water-based is 4 coats like Stewarts, or only one coat?
Any chemically-minded want to dive into this ad?
Certified makes Randolph, which is now owned by Stits, but Certified is about $10 a gallon cheaper - just not many colors.
    Don't think Certified makes water-based.

I agree with that - However dont think tube will slip much without tire slippage, but guess it can happen - thats why the FAA tells us to paint a stripe on the wheel and tire to indicate slippage before the tube gets cut.
