Why did I imagine the Highlander being a take-off on the Piper? Looks like a s/s PA to me....ailerons & flaps.

I forgot about the Highlander - but that is out of my price range.
The last time I looked, the RANS kit was about the same price as a Kitfox. Big difference is the cost of various engines.
Appreciate a place where I am not tarred and feathered and carried out of town on a rail:

P.S. I bought the manual for the Zenith 701 years ago. Those fat wings are too slow, IMO, and the sheet metal not as strong as our 4130 tubing frames, also IMO. Couple of problems with tail design too, IMO.

And, I was told that "all Alaskan Bush Pilots" carried a tie-down kit?
I Could have flown without the extra weight?

You might find ONE on here who likes the Jab engine - there have been problems with them and the prop is too small, IMO.
NOW, I WOULD BE BANNED ON ANY OTHER SITE, BUT MAY BE PUT ON THE "HIT LIST" FOR THE FOLLOWING:

I dont know where you are located, but I would like to hear that you checked out a RANS, at Hays, Kansas.
They are a neat little bird, and easy to build - and no danged flaperons - just standard wings. The seats are the most comfortable I have ever sat in - you can get tandem or side-by-side seating.
They even have an option of a "lace-on, already finished", fuselage covering, so you dont even have to paint.
IF I had not been led down this long Kitfox road, I would have been flying a RANS years ago.

P.S. You can get the RANS with a nose wheel too - why fight a tailwheel? (Now I know I'm in deep doo-doo!)
AND, YES, I will put a tri-gear anywhere you can put a tail-dragger - they both become 2-wheelers the second you hold brakes and open the throttle. (now that should start a ruckus!) BUT, I do wonder why I have to replace so many tail skids?

Since no one gave you approach speeds - Kitfox recommends flying pattern/approach at 65 - AND NO FAST TAXI !!!!!
OLD PROVERB: "Keep thy flying speed up, lest the earth come up and smite thee."
How much taildragger time do you have?

What kind of master cylinders do you have? If you have Matco 4 or 5 series, Matco sells a sleeve kit to reduce your bore from 5/8 to 1/2 inch, and increase your braking by about 56%.

At least he made it to 4th street. I was always worried when taking off north at Merrill - Glen Hwy usually too packed with cars to make a landing on it north - then there is Cook Inlet, and I cant swim - too cold anyway.
Saw photo of Talketna river last night - BAD!
    Thanks, Ed

Can you fit a redrive and motor mount for some other engine to it? Saw a Can-Am with vertical twin 1000cc - 90 hp, I think, and was wondering what rpm it runs - maybe 4 cycle? - then, you are on your own with redrive, etc.
The 800 sounds interesting, and powerful - hope it works - you could start a new club!
Praying that my daughters in Anchorage dont have to put floats on Durango.
Keep me posted on weather - If I wasnt a dinosaur, could probably get it on here - but tried once and damned weather channel was so aggrevating I deleted it after about 500 tries - well, after grandson came and did it.

What a cutie! Makes me wish I was 50 years younger - But then, every morning, noon, and night, I wish I was 50 years younger, and still in Alaska!
    Lucky You! Congrats.
Now, what is an 800 - and what about all this flooding and a cat 3 hurricane storm heading for Alaska?

Yess, we know about those sites where the "Politicly Incorrect" are quickly banished - where you cant say "another brand or design", or that forbidden word, "MOD"!
I say the wrong thing sometimes, but try to apologize if I think I have offended someone.
My old skin is too tough to be burned easily.
I've learned a lot listening to all the "chain-saw drivers"
And appreciate you all putting up with a few "real-heavy-engine drivers".
I think we are all on here to learn and to teach and share for the joy of building and flying.
If anyone feels better by putting minuses by my name, then have at it.......Glad my XXXs arent on here!
I appreciate all of the members comments and sharing info, even if we dont agree sometimes.
Thats the end of my sermon for today ......

I think it is because you dont drive a Rotax? I had the -1 at one time, and went back to 0 the last time I looked.
I wont look again, because it is BS.
I dont have a clue as to how it works.
Think this BS should be removed from this site. We are supposed to be free to say anything, but looks like somebody is being judge and jury, and we dont even get a lawyer.
You are still #1 Soob-driver on here.
I will put a *** by your name if you answer my question about where you mount your fuel pumps and if they are before or after the gascolator.

I had the wings on my Ercoupe metalized - hundreds of rivets and 35 pounds later they were nice.
But remember, the Ercoupe had metal ribs - you would need to put aluminum strips under each side of ribcaps for the rivets.
Ultra-light fiberglas - like in model building - has been tried too.
This builder MIGHT be a member of EAA 42 - I have friends in that chapter who have hangers at Birchwood.

    Travis,
Just curious - what size are the hoses or inlets for the rads?

  20. EDMO added a post in a topic where to get the lexan turtledeck?

Travis, You need to connect with Randy SuberAvid about the finishing of the butt ribs, since he raised his.
Some use fabric to seal the rear spar opening, but since it swings, I have been thinking of some kind of flat rubber to seal that area, maybe along with fabric or sheet metal?

  21. EDMO added a post in a topic Cowl to windshiled fit problem

Simplest - and least messy - and cheapest - Just use 9460. You can rivet or not, but that would make a stronger joint. Different kinds of fiberglas epoxy dont mix or adhere to each other. I would not use Bondo.
    ED in MO
P.S. I still like the idea of putting the rubber over the top of the flange to make a better seal to WS.

  22. EDMO added a post in a topic where to get the lexan turtledeck?

I know you asked Joey, and I write too much anyway - But - the plastic slides in the same as your aluminum. There is an 1 1/2 or 2 inch aluminum strip bolted/riveted over the end of the skylight with the back edge just slightly turned and the TD butts against the back edge of the skylight. Mine is made with the windsheild and skylight being 2 pieces, so I can use dark for skylight, but the setup is the same for the TD.

This is the ONLY instance of a Ridge runner accident I am aware of reported besides Kenny's chase that got him... actualy model 3 two passenger I was told. Look at the tubes... a lot of the structure seemed to try and hold it's own. The cabin is the weak link...it is a lot longer box structure from the earlier model 1 and 2 versions. These are mig welded as well. So...in normal ops I think it is not an issue. One can burn a piece of metal beyond safe use with a Tig if you don't know what you are doing. Once the metal has turned that ugly gun metal grey over the weld area and adjascent tube....well it's done. If you get a nice multi-colored weld bead [ blues and yellow hues ] over the entire weld ... then you are most likely to have a good , safe joint. I test scrap tube welds with pull test machine before welding the actual job... or other simple tests are easy to perform. We don't have to have samples lab tested.....yet.

You might put the flange under the cowl, and sand each surface, epoxy together and blend the seam on the top with the extra epoxy.

Sometimes my old brain works - hope this idea works.

The strut fitting goes onto the tube behind the seat on floor - Duh!
I have this tube from a wrecked Avid - They are a lot different than a Kitfox.
Can send it to you if you want it.
    Just need address and postage.
