I'm curious to hear the cost of the oratex also. I'm just finishing up the painting on a c-model avid and the total cost for the cheap medium covering, tapes and paint using all stewarts is just south of 2k.

Looking for 7/8 struts & castoring nose wheel
Im looking for a set of 7/8 lift struts and the 7/8 jury struts.

I'm also interested in the RV style castoring nose wheel if anyone has one for sale. I checked with airdale and he no longer makes the nose gear.

I coated the inside of my tanks as well with a vinyl ester resin.

I dont think I'll take the chance using ethanol because I dont trust it to be ethanol resistant but I was worried about them having leaks so I went this route.

I used a multi tool to cut the tops off and made a 2" wide lip that I attached to the inside of the tank. Then I was able to glass the tops back on.

A Harbor freight sandblaster will remove the paint and prep the fuse all in one shot. I used Epibond primer on my bird but it wasnt necessary after I decided to use the stewart system.

The Epibond will stand up just fine to the MEK thats used with alot of covering systems. Using Stewarts glue you can go with a cheaper product but Im sure you get what you pay for.

As far as the sandblasting goes, I was a little concerned when I started blasting mine but the Avid manual I have recommended it and I had no problems. I dont think the average home owner air compressor has enough air output to damage the tubing.

I saw you posted this earlier on the other forum, thats why I'd start with the fuel delivery.

Sounds to me If you had full power at takeoff 6500rpm give or take, and during the climb you stopped climbing, most likely you have a fuel delivery problem. It takes a couple minutes to suck down the header tank, thats why it doesnt happen until your a couple hundred feet off the ground.

Pull the gas line off at the fuel pump and see how fast it will gravity feed. Then I'd be looking at all the filters and finger strainers first before messing with the carbs to much.

    Avid butt rib photo
I'm trying to visualize how to run the gasline into the plane, either at the back of the butt rib or behind the tube at the front of the turtledeck. Anyone have a picture of this area?

I've got a few photos of a kitfox but there not the same as the avid

Who has a full lexan turtledeck?
I've been building the turtledeck using aluminum for the sides and a sheet of .090 lexan for the top and I'm wondering how much reinforcement It needs. I saw a couple pics way back that showed a single post with a flat pad on top that butted against the t-deck at the center but I cant find them now.

I'm curious if that had a camlock on it and if just that center support was enough that it wasnt bouncing around.

My t-deck is about 3" taller than stock at the rear carry through.

    finish tapes
I'm wondering if the vertical side stringers that start flush with the fabric at the lower longeron, are about an inch from the fabric at the center of the fuse and flush at the top longeron get a finish tape from top to bottom? The manual calls for a finish tape where all tubes touch the fabric but Im curious on these as only the first couple inches actually touch.

  13. birddog486 added a post in a topic Should I buy this 1990 MK IV?

My .02 isnt worth much but I dont think the MK4 was out until 1991. Avid was still shipping the C model in December of 90 and I'm guessing thats a model C with a mk4 rudder. The cowl, offset in the tail and no trim tab built into the elevator are a couple clues to it's type. It does look decent from the pics and with all the parts included that could be a pretty decent deal.

Yup for now this plane will be a nose dragger with the 912ULS. Working on getting ready to rib stitch the covered wing.

Jim is correct. I have the exact setup that his photos show from a Model C Avid. The vernier throttle and the bellcrank with a rod end. They are available if your interested.

I used a heat gun and an infrared thermometer during my install. I tried to heat roughly a 16x16 area and it seemed to work OK. It may have worked better if there was something to insulate on the back side but once I was able to get the curved area to 300 It was definately relieving some stress. I have the window out now because I'm still building but it's holding a somewhat curved shape on its own.

    firewall to cowl seal?
Whats everyone using to seal the gap between the cowl and firewall? I'm undecided on which route to take.

    Pics are always a plus
