I had a B model with a pull start 532. The plane weighed 445 lbs. It would climb like a rocket ship. Nice airplane! Very nimble and fun to fly. Jim

You might have a look at McMaster-Carr for the bushing for the Avid nose gear. Jim

The Grove landing gear is no longer available.  I do still have the nose gear though.  Jim Chuk

I'll show what I have for pics. Never did see the tricycle gear mounted on this plane as when I bought it, it was back to being a taildragger. Don't look to close at the welding, It doesn't look that good. I think the design is sound however. I did remove those parts from the airplane. Jim
PS should have mentioned, the pics are taken from under the plane looking up. The tab I'm holding is one of the two that the nosegear attaches to. They were welded to the seat truss.

Birddog, the nose gear attaches to two tabs that were welded onto the seat truss, and the suspension top mount was welded to the cluster of tubes that are about 18" ahead of the seat truss. Mike, I'll have to measure it and get back to you. Jim

Don't know if you want both struts or just one, but John Larson posted on the Avid yahoo group that he had two 7/8" struts. He did say one was made special about 1/2" shorter or longer (don't remember which right now) because the builder had messed up the attachment location on the wing spar. Don't know which it was though (right or left) I have a nose wheel from an Avid, it's the later Kitfox style as far as I know. Have the Grove main gear as well. Not sure what to ask for them though. 8. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Looking to build? Coyote, Magnum, Avid kits for sale

Just went back up and looked at the bare bones fuselage. There isn't a forward attachment point like an Avid has. Almost looks like the fus. bends in at that point so a third leg wouldn't work. Extra bracing in the gear though. Jim

Notice where the landing gear attaches? If there were 3 attachment points like an Avid has, they would be using the back 2. Tires must be about 8" in front of the front attachment. Wonder what kind of stress that puts on things. Pretty plane though! Jim

Looks like that plane belongs to a guy in Florida according to the FAA when you look up N 808J

Leni, don't know if you are aware of where that pic came from, but it's for sale in Ketchikan. Has a 912 in it, wants something like $21 or $22,000 for it. It's on barnstormers. Jim

Avid and Kitfox supplied 1/8" plywood with their kits. Just did some checking in the ACS catalog, and 2'X4'X1/8" plywood weighs about 3.5 lbs. Same size piece of aluminum is 14 lbs. 1/16" thick aluminum would probably be okey, but it would still be twice as heavy as the 1/8" plywood. Jim Chuk

Just did some quick calculations, and looked at my WB.  It showed empty plane weighs 584, moment was 7071.5 for a CG of 12.10"  I used 415 lbs. for people at 16" back and 150 lbs. fuel at 33" back.  (I measured my fuselage, and the back of the seat tubing is 30" behind the leading edge of the wing so guessed at a tank of 6" thick front to back).  I end up with a CG of 16.24 with those numbers and total weight of 1149 lbs..  One problem, is you will have issues folding the wings with a tank behind the seat as well as fitting it in there and filling it with fuel.  Hope this helps.  Jim

Not sure what you gain from someone else's WB.  Unless their plane is identical to yours, it wouldn't apply to your plane.  Generaly speaking, most Avids with a 2 stroke engine are on the nose heavy side of the envelope.  Heavier engines make this worse.  Putting battery further back and such help to avoid adding extra weight to the tail.  If you just want the form. I can scan one of mine and get it to you,   Jim Chuk

PS  if you have the builder's manual, Section VIII-D chapter 8 walks you through doing the WB

I was over to the local Auto paint store the other day, and asked about the 105 Gun and equiptment cleaner. This is what I found out. The lady who works the counter there is real sharp on what they sell and has worked there for many years. She showed me what is now called 105 lacquer thinner. She said it is the same stuff as the 105 cleaner, the name has just been changed. Actually before I went there, I had seen the 105 lacquer thinner on the web under Du Pont products and the 105 gun cleaner was not shown on that list. Anyway back to the story about what the gal at the paint store said. She told me it is just a low grade of lacquer thinner and that's why it's priced the way it is. I ended up not getting any at this time. Has anyone knowlingly used lacquer thinner to thin their poly fiber stuff? Thanks, Jim Chuk

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I got most of the paint off now and will get the harder to reach parts with the sandblaster. Jim

Pilot's names released in the San Fran crash
This info was reported by a local TV station in Ca.  Supposedly was verified by the NTSB.  There was a story on the Drudge Report if you want to find the video of the news cast.

Anyway, 4 Aisian pilot's names were listed as Captain  Sum Ting Wong,  We Tu Low,  Ho Lee Kow, and Bang Dang Ow.   Anchor woman read it off with a straight face, and went right on to the next story.

  19. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic 4130 tubing and other asst. bits.........

I called them this morning.  Asked about 6- 6' pieces of 1/2" X .035" 4130 tubing.  She said if I would take 40' she would sell it for $.76 per ft.  Aircraft spruce right now is about $2.80 per ft. for the same stuff.  She did say it was made in China however.....  They are closing up in September.  Good price, but can you trust it?  Jim

Thanks Ed for the info.  I think maybe my grit is to small.  There was some medium grit in the sandblaster when I started.  It did seem to work better, although it did pit the metal more than the finer stuff.  The reason I was wanting to get down to the metel was there were places where the paint was chipped and a bit of rust would be there, or even some bits of loose paint with a little rust under that paint.  What's the best way to clean the tubes before paint goes on?  Thanks,  Jim

  21. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Stripping, cleaning, and painting fuselage

I should have mentioned in my first post, the plane had a green primer (probably epoxy) and a black epoxy on top of that. I have a sandblaster and large compressor (7 HP 80 gallon tank) and I used sandblaxsting grit I bought. (Black diamond fine) Sandblaster didn't want to take the paint off very well at all. Wire wheel on a side grinder does work, but it's hard to work around all the tubes. Thanks for the responce, Jim

    Stripping, cleaning, and painting fuselage
Hi guys, I've been busy stripping the old paint off an Avid fus, and am looking for tips on how others have done it. Also, how did you clean the fuselage before you started painting. I've got some epoxy paint, but what did you use for a primer. I'm especially worried about rust and preventing it from starting. After cleaning off the paint near the tailwheel, I found some rust in one tube. Looks like it came from the inside out though. Hope that's all of it. Thanks, Jim Chuk

  23. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Different wings

I wouldn't swear to it, but I seem to remember that the later Kitfoxes use .065" wall thickness spars even in their 1500 GW planes. If that is the case, the Avid HH wing with .083" spars should be a good bit stronger I would think. Then again, a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, so it doesn't matter if the wing can take it, but the carry through or the struts or some other part fails , you are still in trouble. Did you put the Kitfox plastic leading edge cuffs on? Got any pics? I've got to rebuild a set of Avid wings and am thinking about leading edge cuffs as well. Plane looks nice! Jim
