Fiberglass spring landing gear on barnstormers
Well Barnstormers is back up and running, and I ran across this add.  I had a fiberglass spring gear on my Himax years ago, and it worked real well.  I have thought someone should start making them for larger planes, and had even talked to the guy who built my Himax gear about making a heaver set for a Kitfox or Avid.  He didn't want to monkey with it cause he didn't have a plane to put it on for testing purposes.  Anyway this guy is making them.  I emailed him looking for more info.  Would be nice if it worked right.  A good bit cheaper than grove aluminum gear also.  Anyway, here it is.   JImChuk

The cowl that TJay has came with the kit from Kitfox.  His was serial # 11.  It was listed in the inventory sheets for the kit.   I've seen this cowl on another kitfox 1 also.  I think it was a better look and function then the round cowl that came later.  JImChuk

I've seen mosquitos up in northing Mn and Canada with 14" wingspans.  Their poker was about the size of a 16 penny nail.   Well it felt like it anyway.  (this is the joke section after all)  JImChuk

I actually like the look of that cowl better than the round cowl Kitfox replaced it with.  I'm sure it would be easier to see over then the round cowl as well.  JImChuk

Well to tell the truth, I am going to be missing home and my projects and such long before I get back.  My wife has health issues, and mostly going south is for her benefit.  I probably wouldn't do it myself.  Certainly not for that long anyway.  I've got all the winter toys back home, and liked using them.  I figure as long as I'm stuck here, I might as well make the best of it ;-)  JImChuk

Thanks for the advice Ed.  Those blue angels were buzzing around for about 4 hrs today.  I know last year, we didn't see them after the 1st of the year.  Maybe they get a vacation for a bit before the summer shows and such.  I know they were showing off to, there were only about a half dozen of us on the beach for a mile or two, and when we waved at them, they came back close in and did the barrel rolls.   I just had my cheap phone camera, wish I had a better one with me that would shoot pictures faster.   It was nice anyway.  Mid 70s for temps and light winds.  I keep looking at the forcast for northern Mn, and feel for them.  Supposed to be a high of -5 on Wednesday and low of about -15  JImChuk

I'm still suffering with the winter.  Got a bit of sunburn on my face and legs today.  Also had to put up with this racket from these guys that kept flying up and down the beach showing off.  Then every time I was ready to relax, a rod would start jerking and I would have to run down and tend to it.  JImChuk
PS  when I waved my arms at the planes to try to chase them off, they turned around and did barrel rolls as they went by.   Oh well, I'm supposed to go flying in a Kitfox 4 over in Pennsecola on Thursday.  Maybe we'll cruise the beaches annoying people also.  ;-)

At first glance, I though you were giving it a shave  ;-)  Keep at it,  you will get it done!  I thought you got a cowl from Jabiru.  This one looks like the one that came with the plane.   Looks like the starter clears anyway.  On my Jabiru cowl that came from Avid, I had to build a bump on the top for the starter.  Looking good though!  JImChuk

  10. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Electric controlled Carb Heat

His manifold doesn't look anything like the factory built one on my Subaru engine that came in the Kitfox 4.  I do have a manifold built by Ram performance that looks like his.  It's just a pipe with the correct fittings on the ends.  Mine doesn't have coolant going through it.  I don't think this one does either.  JImChuk

I flew the Jabiru for over 400 hrs in my Avid.  I liked the engine/airplane combination.  Descent power and fuel economy.  Better cruise than the 582.  I think a 912 would be better, but more weight and $.  JImChuk

  12. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Electric controlled Carb Heat

I didn't read everything mentioned in this post so maybe this got mentioned, but I know some car engines use a piece under the carb with hot coolant running through it.   That would seem like an easy way to have carb heat, not sure if it would rob power either, cause it isn't really hot air coming into the engine.  Would raise the carb a bit though.  Just another thought occurred to me, build a box under the carb on the manifold that you could pump coolant through.  Would heat the carb, and not raise it up higher.  JImChuk

  14. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Jet CriCri

Jenki,  you mention that your CriCri has 20 HP engines, and that is not as powerful as the jet version.  Is the jet powered one using the 52 lb thrust jet engines mentioned in Av8r 3400's post?  If so, 52 lbs of thrust is a different way of measuring for power output then tieing off the back of a plane to a scale like I did to get a static thrust measurement where I got about 240 lbs with 40 HP.  Like I said, not arguing or trying to start one, just trying to understand how the thrust is measured on the jet engine.  JImChuk

I would think a warp drive prop would be better for a seaplane than an IVO.  They are a tougher built prop.  Heavier though, but tougher.  Can't make an informed comment on the rest of your questions, so I will leave that to others.  JImChuk

I did the math, and the first one burns almost 12 gallons an hour at full throttle.   Not sure this is the same for a comparison,, but a 447 rotax 40 HP engine I had would pull about 240 lbs static thrust on a scale.  Again, don't know if it's an accurate comparison, but if 40 HP makes 240 lbs of thrust, 52 lbs = 8.67 HP.   I guess it would extend the glide somewhat, but you better not need to climb over anything.  JImChuk

Don't know anything about this plane, but I know an Avid MK IV is very similar to a Kitfox 3.  The two MK IVs I've owned weighed 585 lbs.  One had a Rotax 582, the other a Jabiru.   A 912 installation would be heavier than either of these engines.  Kitfox 3 has a 1050 gross weight,  I would think it would be hard to meet a 500 lb useable load.  Is there something on the Kitfox 3 that limits it to that weight?  Why is the Avid 1150 or 1200 gross weight?  Could that or those limiting factors be strengthened to raise the gross weight on the Kitfox some?  You can sort of use whatever gross weight you want,  although that gross weight is supposed to be proven safe in the phase one flight test time.  It can also be raised at a future time by flight testing and proving it's safe.  To bad he didn't say the empty weight of the plane in the video.  JImChuk

I should have added that I've lived in northern Mn almost my whole life, and sure can relate to what you are going through now.  Like we always say during winter up there "at least there aren't any mosquitos"

  21. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Kitfox header tank low fuel indicator

I have no idea how the second one in my post works, but if it would give a reliable reading thought the side of a plastic tank,  I think it would be hard to beat.  Said it would read through 1 MM to 13 MM thick non metallic material.  At the $15.80 price they show, I would be willing to try it just to see if it would work.  And any electricity is on the outside of the header tank.   To bad I have a metal header tank in the Avid project.  The Kitfox 4 project does have a plastic tank though..... JImChuk  http://www.robotshop.com/en/non-contact-liquid-level-switch.html

I have to much time on my hands.  Looked some more, and found this.  Don't know if it would work or not, but interesting none the less.

There is at least  one type that I believe was supplied by Kitfox.  I have one that was with the unfinished Kitfox 4 that I have.  I'm not near it now to get a part # off of it, so can't help in that way.   Possibly doing a search in the archives here or on Team Kitfox site will turn something up.  I know most snowmobiles have a low oil level sensor in their oil tank, maybe something like that could be used???  JImChuk

It would be nice if they had it in a 3 1/8" size also.   You could then remove an instrument and fit it in the same hole.  That would also help to be able to read it for some of us with older eyes if the numbers were bigger then...  To bad I have the panel made for the Avid project already and everything mounted in it.  This gauge does look nice.  JImChuk
