  1. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Bungee cord 3 wraps bottom and two on top

Maybe the cord he had on hand, maybe he didn't have a manual,  maybe he thought he knew more then Dean Wilson (the designer of the plane)  maybe, maybe, maybe.  The list could be endless.  Question is, did it work ok the way he has it?  Some times people do come up with better ideas then the designer.  Not often though.... My thinking is, when in doubt, follow the manual.   You wont get any glory when it works for knowing more then the designer, but you also won't get the "can't you read a manual" when you try it your way and now you're trying to pick up the pieces  :-)   JImChuk

  2. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Second Chantz BRS Removal (For sale if you want it)

I can't see a rocket engine on it.  Some of the Second Chantz chutes used pressurized air to fire a slug out.  I had a 750 lb second chantz that had a rocket however.  I think the air pressure ones were earlier models.  I also heard that one of the original owners  is repacking these chutes.  I know BRS won't.  JImChuk

  4. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Rotec

This subject came up on the "other" site a year or so ago, and  I mentioned or maybe posted this video or one like it.  Seemed it took the plane about 10 or 12 seconds to get off the ground.  When I mentioned that in my post, I was told that they had to kind of slowly add power because of the torque of the engine.  So if you have tons of take off power you can't use, and the article mentioned the 912 was faster, lighter, burns less fuel, and has better visibility,  I don't see a reason why I would want one.  My thinking is function first, fashion somewhat further down the line.  YMMV.  JImChuk

This is the post I typed up last evening, and then didn't hit the submit reply button.            Actually though, you have 2 hooks pointing up.  A loop could be hooked over one, go down under the seat truss and hooked on the other side.  Probably take a cable come a long hooked to the headache rack to pull it up and into place though.  :-)  Went to ACS and looked at them, and the 5/8" x 8" might just do it.  One of them is good for 750 lbs, the other for 900lbs.  Just walked out to the garage, and the hooks are 5 1/2" above the bottom of the seat truss.  If the hooks were both 1/2" further out, it would make more room for the bungee to go around the flaperons push tube, and the trim cable on the other side.  Hooks are only made for 3/8" cord also.  If a guy was doing some repair on his seat truss anyway, it wouldn't be to hard to remodel things so they would fit.      Again this morning....  Then I looked more at the ACS description, and it said 4 were required for that weight.   That was when I decided not to post my message.  JImChuk

  6. 1avidflyer added a topic in Avidfoxflyers General Hangar

Few things I forgot to do
A few days ago, we had a discussion about the length of Avid struts, and whether they ever changed like Kitfoxes did.  I don't have any early model ones to measure, but here is my MK IV strut lengths.  Also, at some point in the last week or so, I mentioned a sigh my wife painted for me for the hangar.  (The Balkan "Airfarce")  Note the spelling.  Got them both today, and don't feel like wading back through who knows how many posts to find where they belong.  JImChuk

I dug up the magazine article I had on making the crankcase tester I showed in the earlier post.  Don't think the center seals are the culprit,  they are full of oil from the rotary valve shaft gear area.  If they were leaking however, you would see an increase in pressure on the other half of the crankcase if both sides are sealed off.  The article is kind of hard to read, most info regarding the crankcase testing is in the last colume.  JImChuk

I'm wondering why use the stewarts glue and then use poly fiber for everything else?  Poly tac seems to be easy to work with to me.  JImChuk

Doug,  Kitfox 1 and 2 have shorter liftstruts than later Kitfox models.  Don't think the length was changed on Avids.  Diameter was increased on both makes  as they got heavier.

I think it's just a caster wheel.  Lots of different kinds on ebay.  Maybe a good idea to put in good bearings though.  JImChuk

Don't think the spring has the right bend on it to put a Matco or Maule tailwheel on.  Springs can be changed of course as well.  Friend of mine has an Avid A.  It has the same type of tailwheel as you have.  I know of another A model with the same tailwheel.  B models and later came with a 6" Maule.  Are the bolts all snugged up where the spring meets the fuselage, and also where the tailwheel meets the spring?   You could also make another tailwheel fork that would take a larger wheel.

Looking at the picture, I would say the wing bottoms were flat.  You were the one who saw it in person though, so I wont argue with you saying they are undercambered.  If one of the wings was folded back, it would be easy to see.  JImChuk

Was looking for something else in my pictures and ran across this page on what to level for W & B.  Interesting side point that they say to use blocks on the level on the aerobat wing so it doesn't rock in the middle.  (not undercambered then?)  JImChuk

The avid is leveled for W & B with a 4' level under the right wing on the rib just inside of the lift strut.  Funny, the picture shows an Avid A model door.  Not a B.  Sounds like you have a mixture of different parts and pieces.  If it's 36" wide though, (at the top back of the seat) the fuselage is an A.  Never heard of speedwings with undercambered ribs, they are supposed to be flat bottomed. Avid STOL and Heavy Hauler wings are supposed to be 29' 10 1/2" wingspan.  Who knows, maybe the guy balled it up, and replaced the original C model fuselage with an A model.  Stranger things have happened.  JImChuk

I believe usually the cabane is bolted in place with the front landing gear bolts.  I do think that if the center of the cabane was fastened to the seat truss, it would make for a stronger set up.  Haven't seen any other Kitfoxes or Avids done that way though.  JImChuk

Something you can see at a glance is the shape of the door.  A model door looks like this Kitfox 1, later models look like this. (bottom is flat all the way back on later models)   JImChuk

A real quick check to see if it's an A or B model is like Joey said.  The A will be 36" wide at the top of the seat, the B will be 39.5".   JImChuk

Wow!  I bet the air was blue around you after the rib broke off.  Bad words without number I'm guessing.  Bummer!  I'm posting a link to how I fixed a couple of broken rib tails on my Avid.  Maybe it will give you some ideas.  JImChuk

I wonder if your front seal is leaking.  There is a way to test that, basically block off intake, and exhaust ports, and pump air into where your pulse line would hook up.  Have a check valve in the line, and see how long the crankcase will hold 3 lbs of air pressure.  Actually the airpump on a blood pressure cuff works real good, cause you can control the amount of air going in.  The seals can't take more than 5 lbs pressure so you have to be careful not to overpressure things.  Here is  a picture of the one I made.  The end of the hose you don't see in the picture goes to the pulse port.  If my memory is correct, there is a pulse port hole near the front of the engine as well as the back one most people use for their fuel pump.  It has a plug in it that you can remove to check the front of the crankcase.  JImChuk

I put a few hours on a couple of 532s in different Avids.  There was one in my plane that went about 325 hrs before they swapped it out for a 582.   They made about the same HP as a 582, and were easy to hand prop because of the points ignition.  JImChuk

I would ask, how many hours on the plane?  Never mind, just went back and reread your first post that says 230.  I had a similar situation with an airplane that had about 350 hrs on it, and no mention in the log books.  When I talked to the FAA guy, he said if it had that many hours on it, it was surly out of phase 1.  He sent me new operating limitations for phase 2 flight and said I was good to go.  He did know his stuff about experimental aircraft though, which can't be said about all FAA guys.  I would call the FSDO, and see if they have one guy who focuses on experiments more then the rest of them, and talk to him.  JImChuk

I don't think you should use those fasteners.  It's real easy to make a loop that is tied off with safety wire.  If it was me, I would get 18' of bungee material, do the first side without cutting the piece.  After you tie it off and cut it, youwill have extra length to hold onto in order to tie the second loop in the second bungee.  If you look at the third message down from the top, you will see an attachment from Steve Winder that tells how to install your bungees the easy way.  I actually made more marks half way in between his, then there is a mark for the top and bottom of the seat truss.  JImChuk

The 2.7 weight fabric is the medium fabric.  I actually might go with lightweight fabric on the wings, and just use the heavier fabric on the belly.  Up to you though.  Just a bit more weight if you use all medium.  My fuselage widening has about $50 worth of tubing in it.  ( 1/2" X 15')  ((sorry if that hurt))  Probably a bit more work then Murle's  though.  JImChuk

I used the medium grade and the lightest one as well.   Actually, a lot of the kits were sold with uncertified ultralight fabric, so probably a lot of people have used the lightest weight.  JImChuk
