Looking in my manual, it says the pin goes into the pulse hose nipple.  One way I can see how you could damage the crankshaft without using the pin would be if you held the opposite end of the crank from turning, and then torqued on  the bolt holding the piece on the tapered end of the crankshaft.  The crank is actually made from a bunch of pieces pressed together.  So then you could twist the crank.  If you are just keeping the crank from turning by holding the flywheel from turning, then I would say you are not likely to twist the crank.  If I remember right, I put two bolts into the flywheel, put a bar through those two bolts, and turned the bolt holding the flywheel to the crank.  JImChuk

Thanks Larry,  I kind of remember what you're talking about now.  I'll have to dig back deeper into it when I'm ready to fire up my 912 for the first time.  Thanks,  JImChuk

Larry, does purging air from system mean 'burping it'?  JImChuk

Different type engine of course, but I remove my oil cooler on the Jabiru when it gets cold enough to not need it.  JImChuk

  5. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic how to convert a boat trailer to haul a KF

I actually have one, but never have used it.  I would imagine if someone was going to build one, they could make it a bit stronger, and have it like a fork that would slide past the tailwheel.  I did manage to find one picture on line of it in use. Not a great picture though.  Seems like the tail wheel is pretty close to the ground in this picture.   JImChuk

If you leave the plane on the trailer, I would think the trailer would take up more extra storage space.  And can't you  just unhook the tow bar by pulling 2 pins?   I've never used one though, so don't have any first hand experience. Used a trailer quite a few times though. JImChuk

There is a tow bar available that fit on the rear of the airplane as you describe.  Going only 1.5 miles to the airport, the tow bar would make a lot of sense.  I didn't find a picture of one in a quick search, but I'm sure someone will have one available.  JImChuk

If they fit a 912 tractor application, they wont fit a 582 tractor application.  582 application requires a left hand prop.  Real good price on the IVO, I have a new one hanging on the wall for the 92 if/when I get the Kitfox 4 done.  (new IVO is $660 plus extra for the spinner)  Paul, I was more trying to clarify what you had and help fill out the add when I asked about it.  If the one I have wasn't hanging on the wall, I'd buy yours.  Maybe if no one else picks it up, I will anyway for a spare.  Maybe list it on Team Kitfox as well.  JImChuk

Mike Ricketts has an HKS in his Avid, and it seems to perform fairly well.  Everything I've read about them indicates they are much closer in power to a 503 than a 582 though.  The big thing is how much weight are you expecting that engine to pull around.  Remember that when the first Avid Flyers came out, they were powered by a 440 Cuyuna engine.  Those planes were very light though.  JImChuk

You will also need a puller to get the flywheel off the crankshaft.  Easy to make one though, as there are 3 taped holes in the flywheel where the rubber donut bolts to it.  Take a piece of steel, drill 3 holes in it that line up with the holes in the flywheel, put a spacer (socket) between the puller and the end of the crankshaft, and tighten up the bolts till the flywheel pops off.  Tighten up the bolts evenly so you aren't pulling way harder on one side of the flywheel than the other.  JImChuk

I was just watching some videos I took last winter when I went flying with a guy from Pensecola Fl.  He has a Kitfox 4 XL with  a 503 in it.  Really amazing how well that plane performed on just 52 HP.  It was probably 65 above, near sea level, and it took 10 seconds to lift off with maybe 15 gallons of fuel and our at least 400 lbs of weight.  One section of video showed the panel, and turning about 5700 rpm, and in just a slight climb according to the VSI, we were doing 80 MPH.  I still can't get over the lack of landing spaces there.  Over the city, then out over the ocean bays.  Going E into Alabama, we got into some farmland, and that was a bit more relaxing. Then back over a big bay, and then along the beach, cross another bay right in front of the Pensecola Naval airstation, then back over the city to land at Ferguson airfield.  Brave I guess? Or very trusting of that little engine.  I've had to many forced landings and know they can happen at any time.  The point of the whole post though is a light Kitfox with a 503 performs pretty good.  JImChuk

Wypaul,  you said in your last post that you had a Warp 72 UL for sale.  Did you mean an IVO UL?   3 blade?  What condition, how much, pictures?  JImChuk

I believe there is a website called uship.com or something like that where you can advertise for someone to haul your stuff across country.  Might be worth looking into.  The price you got seems real high, if you could find some one going that way with space, it should be way less than that I would guess.  JImChuk

Neat Avid flyer video from Finland
Just ran across this video while surfing utube for Avid or Kitfox videos.  Lots of Finish people in my area, although I'm not one of them.  Good people though, and also obviously have good taste in aircraft.  I'm not on skis yet, but have several inches of snow on the runway.  Lakes are all froze, saw fishermen out on the ice with ATVs today.  JImChuk

Maybe try Kitfox as well.  I talked to Tom at Green Sky last spring about an HKS mount for the Kitfox 1, and I didn't get the impression that he wouldn't make one.  I had an HKS used engine in mind at the time.  I know they had an HKS mounted on a Kitfox 2 at one point, maybe still do.   JImChuk

  17. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic How to tell if it's a MKIV

I took a few pictures of my MK IV that show changes that should not be on a C model or earlier.  If you look at Doug's pictures near the end of the first page, you can see some of these same gussets.  First is the door latch.  Then the extra gussets on the rear spar carry through.  JImChuk

I believe the mount will work with either engine.  Occasionally  used radiators come up for sale.  Maybe Ed has one.  Also, you need the filler cap fitting and a overflow catch bottle plus the hoses.  Can't think of anything else off hand right now.  If it was me, and was looking at changing the engine, I would maybe consider an HKS.  4 stroke,  2 cylinder, very easy on fuel, and makes a bit more power than the 503, although a bit less than the 582.  JImChuk

I wouldn't be surprised if a C model was cheaper than a MK IV, and some people wanted a lower priced kit and requested the C model.  The factory could have then said, sure we will sell a C model to you, and then built it to the C model specifications.  That would account for C models being built way after the MK IV came out.  JImChuk

  20. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic "beefing up / modifying" structures a BAD idea???

If you look at how many seat trusses have folded up on Avids and Kitfoxes, using the factory bungee gear, you know it's a weak area.  At that point, it's asking for trouble if you don't beef it up.  Even Avid eventually recommended infilling with plywood.   As far as widening the fuselage at the doors, Lots have done that before me as well, Murhel  Williams comes to mind.  He sells a kit/add on you can do yourself.  And in the end, I'm the one taking the most risk.   JImChuk

Interesting comment by Jerry at Airdale, about # 1388C as the serial # on a C model plane.  I didn't realize they used other letters besides the D after the MK IV serial #.   Other good info about how to tell if it's a MK IV as well.  JImChuk

Hi Adam,  you can send the pics to me in a private email, and I'll give you my opinion.   That and 75 cents will get you a senior coffee at McDonalds.    Do you have the engine serial # as well?  JImChuk

A speed wing may not be the best choice for off field landings.  Higher stall speed and such.  I've put about 450 hrs on a Jabiru engined equitp Avid Flyer.  Before serial # 450 may be good to stay away from and the early hydraulic lifter engines (somewheres after #1850 or so.  Latest engines seem to be very good. I have a solid lifter engine # 903.  JImChuk

One thing about a pre buy, especially on an experimental, is everyone sees things differently.  What might seem just fine to one person may not be to another.  I've changed things on every experimental I've owned after I got it home.  They had flown for varying amounts of time the way they were, but I didn't like them that way myself.  JImChuk

When I mounted the windows on my recent Avid rebuild, I put some foam weather stripping on the tubes and then attached the lexan.  I have a few extra holes in the doors, and they were hidden by the foam.  Foam was 1/8" x 3/8".  Probably cost me about $5 to do both doors.  I drilled the holes in the lexan, clecoing the holes as I went along, and when all the holes were drilled I chamfered the holes, applied the foam to the doors, and then put the windows in place.   I just used gray foam, but maybe you could find white.  They do sell a double sided white foam tape that is made sticky on both sides, but it cost a good bit more than the weather stripping.  JImChuk
