If you have the poly brush on the fabric and try to shrink it some more, you will make a real mess.  The poly brush will melt and stick to the iron.  JImChuk

If you just do the bottom fabric and shrink it without the top fabric in place, you may put a bow into the wing.  I'm trying to remember how I grabbed the string the last time I ribstiched where I had an aluminum leading edge.   I'm thinking I pushed the string in with the back side of the needle, and then grabbed the sting though the other hole with a small wire with a hook on it.  Once I figured out how to do it, it wasn't that bad.   Nice progress on the other wing, looks good.   JImChuk

I'm with Leni, check the plugs, and maybe add a bit of pitch to the prop.  Main jet controls full throttle, needle position controls mid range rpm.  Glad you are having fun with the plane.  JImChuk

I have to say that the ones I have dealt with have been decent people.  I did try to treat them with respect as well, and that helps I think.  One of them had been working up in Alaska before he moved back to Mn, and he told me how he was restoring his Champ. The one that he almost lost in a river up there when he turned around on a sandbar and the tail dropped into the river.  He was a real nice guy who obviously loved airplanes.   JImChuk

Maybe I'm wrong on this, but I thought the AW cert was supposed to be displayed where it was readily visible????   JImChuk

With the fiberglass seat, you are pretty well stuck with one position.  With the sling seat, you can tighten or loosen it somewhat to move it around.  As far as headroom goes though, if you lower it to far, it will be rubbing on the control tubes.  Avid used to have an option of a bubble top windshield that gave more headroom.  I think one could make a domed top using plexiglass, I used to have a site saved in my favorites that would custom make skylights for a reasonable price.  Those would be some options to get more headroom.  Here is a pic of my Avid that had the bubble tops.  JImChuk

I had my wife sew up a pouch with a clear plastic "window" on one side.  Used a couple of zip ties to tie it to one of the tubes behind the seat.  Clear plastic is toward the front, and so you can see the AW cert. and other paper work in the pouch.  Velcro on the top to keep it closed.  It probably is about 6" wide, and 5" high.   JImChuk

  10. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Who’s experimented with spinners?

At least in streamlined tubes, a pointy front doesn't help as much as a pointy back.  Maybe that's why a front spinner doesn't help that much for improving performance/drag where the rear spinned did help.  JImChuk

  12. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Coolant Bottle

That bottle does not have to be airtight.  You start out with the radiators full of coolant.  As the coolant warms and expands, it gets pushed into the overflow bottle.  When it cools back down the coolant contracts, and it is sucked back into the radiator system.   No need to be airtight.  in fact, if it was airtight, you would pressurize the bottle when coolant tried to force it's way in.  The hose going into the bottle should reach nearly to the bottom so it doesn't suck air.   Just like on all the newer cars that use an overflow tank.  JImChuk

Well there is no question the Avid is a bit draggy.  Undercambered wing adds a lot of drag, not sure if there is any way to get rid of that.  But any thing that improve things is a good thing.  What engine does the C model Avid that you are getting have?  JImChuk

The control forces are very light on these planes.  Not much trim is needed really.  Adding just a tiny bit of flaps will give nose down trim, easy to loop a light piece of bungee cord around the joy stick and tied back to the seat truss works for nose up trim.  Higher up on the stick you put the bungee, the more pull it gives you.  Very simple and does work well.  JImChuk

  17. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic FAA Guidance for Experimentals

At the risk of starting a war with the local FAA guys, if you got their names, look up the FARs mentioned regarding experimentals so you know you are on firm ground, and then give your FSDO a call.  Ask their opinion as to the legality of you working  on experimental category aircraft.  If they say you can do your own work, per such and such reg, then imform them of your ramp check and the false info the inspectors had.  If they say your can't do your own work, quote the regs that say you can.  Lots of these FAA guys are not familiar with experimentals and it would be nice if they knew what they were talking about.  Not wanting to start a war with them, but in a nice way show them they still have something to learn.  If they are decient people, they will want to know what's what also.  And besides, when they are wrong, they could end up looking like a fool by pushing something and I'm sure they don't want that.  I had one FAA guy start to raise a fuss about me having done some work on the plane, and when I stood my ground on it, I could see the look of uncertainty come into his face.  He said he would look into it, and that was the end of that.  JImChuk

  20. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Nose Wheel Rigging

Never had a nose wheel Avid, but will add this.  When you push down on say the right pedal, the left one comes back/up.  When you  push on the left pedal, the right one comes back/up.  Remember that the rudder pedals are connected to the rudder by the cables on both sides.  That being the case, only one steering rod should really be needed I'm guessing.  JImChuk

  23. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Finally starting new hangar!

Mark,  If you have a man lift on the bottom end, that will make it easier, and safer as well.  Not sure how your insulation will work out, but if you were able to start with a 4' piece, it would make putting the next piece of insulation down much easier.  Then working off the last sheet of roof sheeting, you will only be reaching out 1' for the next insulation joint when you lay that down.   If you start with a 6' wide piece of insulation, you will put one sheet of tin down, and then have to lay the next roll of insulation down before you can lay anymore roof sheeting.   Then you are reaching out 3' to make the next insulation joint.  Not near as safe.... Not sure if my explanation makes sense, it did to me :-)  You are a 6 hr drive from me.  Bummer.  JIm

Mark,  you probably know this, but getting the first piece of roof sheeting installed will be the worst. After that, you have something to stand on.  If I was doing it, I would put a platform you can stand on, on the forklift and position it outside so you can get to the center top of the roof and be able to place the top of the sheet in position.  A guy on a ladder down at the low end of the wall can work that end of the sheet.  Use a pair of vice grips clamped on each end with a rope tied to the vice grips to pull the sheet up to you.    Once that sheet is in place, you can walk on that sheet to set the rest of them fairly easy.  29 gauge sheeting will weigh about 50 lbs. for 25' long piece.  About 75 lbs for 26 gauge.  So you aren't dealing with much weight.  As long as it isn't real windy.... Wish I was closer, I would come and give you a hand.  I'm getting bored down here with nothing to do.   JImChuk

  25. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic NEW Fiberglass seat pan for sale

I'm not sure if the Kitfox and Avid fiberglass seats are actually different, but the FG seat in the Kitfox 1 didn't bother my back as much as the FG seat in the Avid.  Then again, if the same FG seat was tipped forward rather than being somewhat reclined, you might find it hurts the back more then.  Maybe they sit in the planes differently.  JImChuk
