Polyester resin for both the Avid and Kitfox on the early tanks and then vinyl ester in the later tanks that came with the KF's.

I saw a study of an Ultralight with aged sails and the dark colored areas on the top of the wings and HS were in better shape than the light areas.  Not sure if that translates to our painted fabric planes, but I would have thought the opposite to be true.  Dark colored houses don't weather as well as light ones. I will take a look and see if I can find it again.

Couldn't get it to load on the I-pad but it worked fine on the MS desktop machine.  Pretty cool setup for the ice.

The VW is a heavy engine if you add a reduction what will that do to your W/B? Which VW do you have?

Sorry Greg, you have a Kitfox so that may be different but if you refer to the Avid manual you can see how it is setup.  Also the photo offer stands.

Manu I would get the Caswell tank sealer and treat the tanks, I think you will find that alcohol will eat the old style tanks even with the two stroke oil.

True for the 582 but the 912 is rigged different if it was sold with 912.  See Larry's explanation above.
If you have the manual handy look in Section IV D-912 Chapter 4 page 3, this is how the throttle arm is rigged, as Larry has discribed with the springs pulling the throttle open when you firewall the throttle open. A picture of the belcrank is on page 8 of chapter 5.  If your's is not rigged as discribed let me know and I will take a closeup of the throttle arms for you today while at the hanger.  I may have posted section IV for the 912 on this forum if you do not have it, I will look and let you know.

The original "bellcrank" did not invert or reverse, so the cable works just right, push to full throttle.

I went with the ACS 05-06387 which is friction lock and about $60 less than the McFarlane.  Not a fan of the vernier with the pushbutton personally but it does have some advantages for some folks.  Not sure if I ended up with the 4 or the 6' for mine. Ran mine without the full throttle spring setup for about 250 hrs and liked that but now have a very light weight spring that will still allow it to creep to full throttle without making the throttle jerky on the ramp.  That is probably why I didn't like the vernier/push button setup.

Dexcool or Evans NPG+ waterless coolant which is what I am running in mine which has several advantages.  Best to refer back to the Rotax service bulletins and get it from the "source".  That way you can make an informed choice that best suits your situation.

  13. wypaul added a post in a topic Wanted: Big wheels and tyres for Avid IV

Maul does have a pneumatic tire available at ACS but you would need to buy the different fork/arm to fit it costing around $170USD total and it is still a Maul.  I'm a Matco fan after the Maul taught me about ground loops and fuselage repair.  The Maul is for sale if anyone wants one after my sales pitch, make me an offer (stock solid wheel) only slightly used.

  15. wypaul added a post in a topic 912 carb rebuild recommendations needed

The rebuild is very simple but the kit is very pricey.  Look and see if the enricher is assembled correctly, the shaft has a dot on the end that you can see at a glance .  The dots both need to be facing forward if I remember correctly which I may not so check it out for correct position.  I think that I would pull it apart and have a look at the diaphragm and clean the passages.  Also take a close look at the socket for cracks.  Also weigh the floats for the correct weight.  There were some bad floats that came out about a year ago that caused me months of misery before I finally found out what was going on.  You can check for leaks at the socket and manifold with spray carb cleaner.  Just double checked, the dot  does need to be forward at about 4 o'clock for the right side and 8 o'clock for the pilot side carb when viewed from their respective sides.  Good hunting in your quest.

Ps Bing USA in Kansas has parts and a manual available and I think they do repairs also but I would call to make sure.

  17. wypaul added a post in a topic Different cowl idea???

Epoxy will stick just fine to the polyester resin but like Ed said not Dacron fabric,  We use that as peel ply for smoothing out a layer and making a good surface for bonding more layers.  Polyester resin on the other doesn't stick to epoxy worth a darn and one other note, chopped strand mat only works properly with the polyester resin.
West is the brand of epoxy that I like, mostly for the easy mixing with the pumps.

  18. wypaul added a post in a topic Different cowl idea???

The problem with buying a nose bowl is they are just not quite right for your application.  The ones available are mostly for air cooled engines and will be draggy.  When I switched to a Jabiru for my Q2 I bought the nose bowl from Jabiru and built the cowl around it.  When it was all said and done it would have been much easier to build the cowl from scratch.  My suggestion is to design and build the fiberglass nose bowl to suit your application , it is an easy and fun project.  Epoxy is easier than polyester resin to work with and finish. The cowl we built for my friends Piet had the side open at the fuselage for the same reason as the Supercub, tandem fuse and a wide air cooled engine.  That style of cowl sure makes it easy to open the cowl for inspection.  Paul

I think something is lost in the translation .  Do you have a part number for your kit or can you post a picture of the area you are referring to?

  20. wypaul added a post in a topic Starter Solenoid for a 582

Here is a link to the Denso solenoid for less than half the price that Rotax wants but like Larry said:

ACS sells one that will work for about $10  PN 11-03162.

  21. wypaul added a post in a topic Bush Gear

The lower part of the gear strut compresses the spring from the top, thus allowing the legs to spread under load.
I have been using the. Bush gear for over 300 hrs now and see no signs of the springs bottoming out with some pretty hard landings.  The fuselage sides and the gear truss do need to be re-enforced as discussed in the past on this site.  Mine came from highwing llc so are slightly different.  I did have some problems before adding the frame strengthing members and the gear Crossmember modified.  If I think of it I will install a tattletale to show the actual movement in the spring. 22. wypaul added a post in a topic Flaperon behavior in a stall

My flaperons still are working after the plane "stalls" but it isn't much of a stall, the nose drops and it starts flying again.  The rudder is your friend in the slow, stall area of flight in these little planes. Takeoff and approach stalls are still threats as accented by the KF that is being discussed in another thread which stalled on approach at Mexician Mountain, Utah. Paul

  23. wypaul added a post in a topic Dark or Light color for the top half of cowling?

I just painted the hood of my Pete white, it was maroon with the clear coat missing.  The really interesting thing is that darn base coat reflected more than the white, that I treated to slightly flatten it.  That said my cowl on the MK IV is dark metallic blue and have never noticed a glare that has bothered me unlike the Pete with that big big flat hood.  I am thinking that it will make little difference so pick the one that tickles your fancy best.  2 cents worth

Got to love that ground speed when you are headed home.  The only time I saw anything like that was in my Q2 one day over the Granet mountains and the GPS 296 started showing the speed increasing up to 999KTS and this is not anywhere near Devils Tower!  Glad to hear you are headed home.
