  1. wypaul added a post in a topic Earth X Battery Warning!!!

There is a breaker in the circuit that trips, taking the alternator off line and illuminates a warning lamp.  To reset, reset the breaker.

    Over Voltage Protection
moved this over so that it is searchable.
My lizard brain finally kicked in and I remembered where I bought the Crowbar for OV protection:
    http://www.bandc.aero/over-voltageprotectionmodule.aspx
They also have PM (permanent magnet) kit which will work on Rotax and Jabiru.

For wiring diagrams refer to Bob Nuckles book at aeroelectric.com it is packed full of everything electrical for aircraft.
If I remember correctly the B&C products do come with a wiring diagram.

No it isn't it is aeroelectric.com
Here is a link to the crowbar.
    http://www.aeroelectric.com/Catalog/AEC/9003/DIY_Crowbar_OVP_F.pdf
There was a crowbar already assembled but it looks like it is now  a DIY project only.
Ed can you post a link or address to Jim's site.

Randy, I wonder if what you need is the "crowbar" over voltage protection instead of the second battery.  That would protect your electronics also and and the warning light lets you know you have a problem.  Circuitry and parts are on AeroElectric website. This has a three position switch that also allows you to take the alternator out of the circuit manually and is much cheaper than the second battery. I use this on both of my planes.  Lots of other great info there also for wiring aircraft with circuit diagrams and a great support group.

  6. wypaul added a post in a topic Rotax 912 Oil Cooler

The MK IV was deigned with the oil tank under the baggage compartment with the aluminum oil lines running under the fuselage which was to cool the oil.  My temps ran from 230-260F which was higher than what I was comfortable with and I added an Earls oil cooler.  I suggest that you plan on adding the oil cooler while you are getting setup rather than later.  A friend with a Rans S6 had the same results and also added the oil cooler.

  11. wypaul added a post in a topic Rotax 912 ULS Throttle control and Cables

That is what I am using. Guess it depends on which throttle arms that you have, the ones on my carbs are set up to use cables like that.  Shoot us a picture of your setup, someone will have an idea.

That is well within spec, @ 4000rpm it must not exceed 300 rpm and 115 max difference between the two.

I don't know if your 2 1/2 turns out is a typo but the manual states 1 1/2 turns but if it wants to be at 3/4 to run properly that is where I would run it.

  14. wypaul added a post in a topic Winter

I do feel sorry for you Jim, missing out on winter.  It is Kind of hard to run a ski plane on the sand.  I guess that I am one of those sick ones that think winter is the best time of the year.  Fishing sure is a lot more fun when it is warm for sure, enjoy.

  16. wypaul added a post in a topic Landing gear stubshaft instalation

Leni the axles that Matco sells are great they will be the last ones you will have to buy.  They are hollow so lighter but tuff as hell and believe me I have tested mine.
The Matco part number is WhLA 22L.  The fuselage or the gear will bend but not the axle.

I am running the MGL V6 in the Avid and would buy another one if I needed one.  Nice light unit and easy to operate.

  18. wypaul added a post in a topic Carb heat question?

Using the electric heater on the carbs is supposed to be more efficient because heating the carb body will not heat the air as much as a standard carb heat setup.  I have not seen empirical data that proves this but that is the claim of some of the folks selling the electric resistive units that you refer to. It is all about the air density and the amount of oxygen you can get into the cylinders and therefore the amount of fuel the engine can burn, less oxygen, less fuel and then less HP.

  19. wypaul added a post in a topic AC for fuel systems and experiementals

+1 Geoffrey.  Also reference AC20-27G 8(h-I) which deal with the cockpit area and the fuel system for amateur built experimental aircraft.  Even in these sections, and note the word "Should" there is no mention of metal fuel lines.  I am sure the speaker was well meaning but in this instance at least, not well informed. If you still have doubts I suggest you contact the EAAhttps://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/advisory_circulars/index.cfm/go/document.information/documentID/99737

  20. wypaul added a post in a topic Electric trim??

The electric trim works very nicely, the MK IV builders manual on this site covers what you need to know.  Their other alternative is the spring trim that Sonex and many other planes use.  The Q2 that I have uses it, was designed with it and it works great. I believe that TJ has it install on his KF1 build.

  23. wypaul added a post in a topic My latest project MK4

One thing that is making the nose set lower is the non stock tail spring which has a greater angle and appears to tip the tail wheel pivot bolt to the rear at the top instead of forward. That will also create negative stability and be a little squirrelly on the roll.  It does get the rear fabric a littler higher out of the weeds.  Mine wants to land tail low when landing slow but the speed wing is different and may have the center of lift a little more to the rear than the STOL wing.  Anyway it will be nice to get some reports about how she flies and handles.
Great plane Joey it's going to be fun!

    Hey Joey,
Did you happen to meet a young woman named Heidi from SD Dakota flying the T craft that Pops Dory made "Climbing out Deadstick"in?  I ran into her in Douglas, WY on her way to the he flying when she was trapped by the weather as was I.
I am going to try to make that one next year.  Great pictures!
