  1. I just tried to call him but got the answering machine.  Kind of interesting though is the phone # prefix is 864, and that's the prefix in Greenville Sc.  (wife's daughter lives there) and the supposed location of the kit is near Reno.  I'm guessing it's a heavy hauler wing if it's a MK IV and not a speedwing.  Who knows though? :-)  JImChuk

Jim, can you remember that ad? Check this out:

  2. Looks stretched from that angle. If that fuse is stretched, go straight for the 912 and don't look back!

    Hello,

Are there any write ups on the fuselage mods for these (ie: stretching and other improvements)?

  3. More progress on wife's plane. Next step fiber glass work:(WIN_20171219_200410.thumb.JPG.1fc35b7663WIN_20171219_200401.thumb.JPG.7c70ba7e2bWIN_20171219_200227.thumb.JPG.c8f2b8bdd8

what are those shocks? Brand, cost? They look outstanding!

  4. One guy who changed his 582 to a Jabiru said everything included in the 582 installation weighed 135 lbs.  Jabiru with mount and oil came in at 136 I believe.  The Jabiru does sit a little further forward than the 582 though.  They are both lighter than the Yamaha though.  I would thing a stretched Avid would be much better than a standard length fuselage with that extra weight.  JImChuk

    Jim,

Do you know of any write ups on stretching the MK4 fuse?

  5. Looks like you are well on your way to having a nice airplane.  If it was me, I would widen the fuselage and add some bracing to the seat truss before you cover the airplane.  JImChuk

    Jim,

Do you have any recommended reading for what modifications get done to these fuselages for "updating" or improvements?

  6. Thank you both. Teal Jenkins has a c box, Skytrax adapter, and rk400 clutch that actually belong to one of his customers. I talked to him, he gave me a price, and I am seriously considering making the purchase. The components are claimed to be new, and Teal seems like a trustworthy guy. If I buy these components, I should be good to go.. I think.

  7. RX-1 IGNITION :

Been waiting for the mount to come back from the welder, so I've been digging into other things on the plane.

One is wiring ignition power to the ECU.  There is a single wire for that and I believe it is the only power source to the ecu, making it critical to keeping the engine running.

I decided to power it from two sources, each switched and CB protected.  One source will come directly off of the engine magneto (alternator coil), prior to the main fuse for the charging system.  The other power source will come from hot battery direct. I will put a surge protector on the magneto side in case the engine's voltage regulator were to fail.

I will also will diode protect each power source to prevent backfeed if I get down to one source (example that if the magneto were to fail I would want to switch the master off to conserve the battery, but would not want my panel being fed backwards through my ignition hot battery wire).

So that is my plan.   Any electrical engineers out there (or just people smarter than me!) please speak up if you see me going wrong!

I know this is an old topic, but I am an Electrical Design Engineer, and I would be willing to take a look as any of your electrical circuits.

  8. Nice job. What kind of door latch is that? How about a picture of lower mount area.

New plane for me, not real nuts about the door latch.  Works great, but it is a little tough to get to and open from the cockpit  in a hurry (egress).  On the to-do list to modify.

I know this is an old post, but I am curious what tubing OD and wall thickness you used for the main tubing (see red arrow in the pic). I am also curious what thickness you used for the flanges (other red arrow in the pic). 4130 I assume, right?

  9. Man that thing looks like you stole it off the showroom in 2002!

    Heres the manual for it:

Thanks for all of your help Yamma-Fox. And also thanks for all of your other contributions in this arena. I have a couple of experience related questions for you that I would prefer to ask offline. Do you have a number I could reach you at? Please PM me if you would. Thanks.

  10. That’s great Yamma. I spoke with Steve Henry, and he really praised Teal’s new gearbox. I am hoping for something of that caliber. I am an Electrical Engineer on a design team, and I have access to a hand full of exceptional Mechanical Engineers/cad jockeys. If Teal needs some resources, have him reach out.

  11. Now I need to find the most reliable gearbox/ adapter combo for the motor.  I heard Teal does some very good work with this stuff, and he recently made a new system for the Apex. I wonder if he has anything new for the RX1. #Teal, if you could chime in here.
