yes, with the plane level, you measure back from the leading edge.

  2. akflyer added a post in a topic My new 1450 Full lotus floats

NO problem rotating.  The tail section of these 1450s are real short, with lots of float area from the step forward.  I do need a ventral fin, as it is a real workout to keep the ball centered without them... I will build one this winter when I pull the floats off.. right now I have too much playing to do

With the 1450s I am VERY light on the water only takes a few inches to be free floating ( I love it).  The 1450s are the same length float as the 1260s, they are just 15" longer from the step forward, and have shorter tails.

Got my new float monsted up yesterday.. dang a big difference a straight float makes!  Picked up a MPH and climb went up about 300 FPM from the old twisted float.  GEt up on step alot better now too without that tail digging in!  Loading up the bird in about an hour to go bust some ducks today.

Would not hurt to have them Xrayed just like you would a piper strut.  Spend 2-300 hundered bucks on the Xray and you would have to wonder anymore..

Another thought.... if you fly as much as I do, it wont take long to pay for a set of the plastis tanks from wingtanks.com.  They you can run the piss poor use of good drinking corn fuel in your plane.  In the last year, I have put allmost 400 gallons through mine.

    Looking good!

Do you have the FAA suggested flight test manual?  I think I downloaded it off the FAA site and may have a PDF if you cant find it.  It really helps to take you through full flight testing for the 40 hrs.

yes, when it is still hot, it wil stick a bit, but you let it cool down for a few seconds and she will peel right off.  This was a trick outa the polyfiber manual.  The edges do stay down after you iron them in!  I still have a few spots on my wings I need to hit when I bring it home one of these days.

  10. akflyer added a post in a topic Whats up with Airdale ?

Amazing what a few phone calls would do to ease a customers mind.  I was ready to buy a Lil Buzzard a coupleyears ago and they would not return calls or emails.  They must still be around cause the site is still up, and has been updated.  I bet I called 20 times with no answer.

On the other hand, I have called Airdale (before the sale) and it took weeks to actually get a call back or get someone to answer the phone.  It is very hard for someone to work 2 jobs, try to build parts and answer the phones and emails.  I dont envy him a bit.  On the other had.. the cost of an aswering service is VERY cheap compared to loosing customers to aftermarket guys or guys just building thier own parts.

Oh and welcome to the site

My brother ran it in his for about 100 hrs with no issues.

About every 50 hrs or so, we would run some Mercury Power tune through it.  does the decarbon etc without having to pull it down.  Engine was 100% squeeky clean when we pulled it down for new seals at 300 hrs.  Not a bit of carbon on the pistons, and the bearings looked brand new with no plating at all.

You can also run Decalin in it which is a lead scavanger and is said to help with the lead plating on the bearings.

Were your tanks sloshed or you running bare fiberglass tanks?

Found one, but the wife has been burning up my play money with surgeries this year...  If I can ever get her fixed up so she can go more than 8 weeks between operations, I will be all over the 800 engine!

  14. akflyer added a post in a topic So whats up with the fat bastard builders???

Mine is the same way.. Was in way to big of a hurry to get it in the air to waste time sanding between coats etc.  when I was shooting the top coat, I had the wing hanging, and just kept walking around it as it was dry by the time I got one side done, so I had the top coat on thewing complteded in about an hour.  Could have spent a little more time on the tape edges with the iron, but I really thought they were all down good till the top coat.  I was able to go back over them using a plastic oven bag laid over the tapes, then hit it with the iron.  Make sure is you do this, you let the paint cool before you try to peel the oven bag off!

I knew from the start that I was not building a hangar queen and I have allready put a hole or two in it running around in the alders and willows.. But that is what I bought and built it for so I am all good with it!

I will try loading Firefox on my puter and see if it does the same thing to me.. or do all your computers have FF on them and you are only having issues on one computer??

  17. akflyer added a post in a topic Reliability of the 503 Verses the 582

In short, yes, the 582 is just as reliable.  I know of 5 or 6 up here that have from 15-1700 hrs on them with nothing but new seals if a leak check shows them to be failing.

  19. akflyer added a post in a topic FIRST FLIGHT N279AF

SAAAAAA FN WEEEEEET  looked pretty damn good for a first flight!  I can say that my first flight in my Avid after the rebuild was WAY more of a rush than my first solo..   Now get out there and fly those hours off so you can take the wife and kids up, they both sound like they are ready and willing.  My kids love flying with me, but the wife does not do too good.  If there is any bumps at all she goes into panic mode, and then start looking for the sic sac.  Takes the fun outa it right there I tell ya!

Again, congrats on the great first flight!

well the new float showed up at the house yesterday!  FL said they inflated it at the factory and it is nice and straight so I am hoping to have the new float installed Wednesday or Thursday and getting some good stick time in this fall on them!  Duck season is in full swing now so it is time to make some more FL playing in the mud and grass videos!

  21. akflyer added a post in a topic A leak in my tank again

I dont see a reason why you couldnt, unless they are using it as part of the structural integrity of the wing... Steve Winder could answer that one.  Pipers are that way, just an aluminum lid that is held on with sheet metal screws.  I have seen guys complaining about how long it takes to fill the tank because of the small transfer lines.  Why not just put 2 filler necks in and just have 2 gas caps on one side?  Would be a quick way to fill it.

  22. akflyer added a post in a topic A leak in my tank again

oh man, this sucks.  I am guessing you dont want to pull the tank or replace it, just drop in the newer plastic tanks?  How about cutting out the entire top of the old tank, lay in a layer of glass using the epoxy tank resin on the ID, then putting a new top on?  Should be able to lay it up in a day or two and not loose to much time or add much weight.

sounds like a good place to jump it in at.  If you can put it outside the firewall, can you mount it vertical, or atleast on a 45?  The one in my plane is on a 45, I tried to mount mine horizontal on the boat, and it did not like it..
