and only by the grace of god have you made it thus far in your flying career... ole murphy is a bitch... he knocked me out of the air once with something I had no control over... just cause you crash and burn does not mean it was your fault. Mechanicals happen, and the wrong failure at the wrong time leads to you only being able to go along for the ride and enjoy the view through the windscreen right up to the moment of impact... ask me, I know!

    Hey Dan,

Sorry, I know I was spose to get the measurements for you, but I ended up with a few life altering changes at the house (got rid of the wife thing) and I did not make it out to the airport. I will be back in town on the 23rd and will get some numbers for you then.

Great Article on Dean! One guy I would love to meet and BS with. I cant tell you how much fun I have in the Avid. It really has put the fun back into flying with the things I can do on 65 HP and a few bucks. Alot more fun taking this into a short strip knowing I am not gonna loose my life savings if I do bend it up. Makes it alot more fun to not have to think about it!

use the hysol. You should be able to google it and order just some small tubes if you only have a few tails to put on. You can get the hysol in small tubes with mixers on the end so you just squeeze and mix.

Looking good mister! I think it would be fine in deep powder, but one track, or branch, or anything under the snow and yer fully FUBAR. The issue with normal floats is the deep Vee in the bottoms. They are a bitch in deep snow, and wont take the abuse of hitting trees or rocks under the snow, can they be used, yes, has it been done, hell yeah, I know lots of guys that take off the water and land on glaciers etc.. is it really safe... nope. That is why I like my 15' X 23" flat bottom inflatables!

I spent a few days up past skwentna at Fish Creek Lakes.. Damn nice lodge at Fish Creek Lodge Winter rates are rooms or cabins 75 night per person including meals. As the days are kinda short right now, long flights mean over night trips for me. Anyone up for invading a lodge for a day or two? I was up last week and there was 29" of new snow with more on the way, so make sure you have your skis on.

Did you check the connections on the EGT probes? You should have a set of wires coming off the back of the gauge, then the thermocouples plug into that wire. Make sure those connections are good. I had one set drive me nuts, and even though the plugs looked good, I was getting high and erratic EGT readings... turned out the extension wire was hosed up. I learned this after changing probes and gauges twice.

The third is a 100 hp T craft. That belongs to the guy that owns the cabin we were at.

My ski's are on Wagonmasters Blue MK IV so I will stick with the floats till we get another set of ski's built for the Mk IV.

That was the guy that owns the lodge at the other end of the lake, and my buddy that owns the cabin.. I just flew thru a 50 mile snow storm that dropped visibility to about 200' I was flying IFR ( I follow Rivers) for awhile so it took a good bit to get me tipsy... adrenaline is a wonderful drug!

Some of the pics pissed me off cause they were AWSOME sunrise pics, but I left my good still digital at home and had to take pics with the video cam.. alot more grainy than I wanted. Next time I will damn sure have both cameras with me!

Working on the vid, but the POS HD helmet cam I bought is pissing me off on the quality of the video.

    Fish Creek Lakes trip
Last week me and a buddy took a little trip to spend a few days at a friends cabin. Had a great time once we both got there (we got separated in a snow storm and my buddy had to land down river about 20 miles and spend the night). The pics did not come out that great from the video camera but you will ge the idea.

I picked up a new HD helemet cam last week prior to leaving on my trip.. I am not sure if I have a setting hosed up or if the mount is not sturdy enough, but the vid came out kind of wavy. Pissed me off, but I will see if I can salvage any of the footage. If not, I will be looking at you helmet cam and trying that one out.

Joey, if you temps at cruise are high, then you need to raise the needle to fatten it up! Glad to hear that you now have the power that you felt you always should have had.. but I bet you would have had that same performance with the grey head if it was turning the right RPM too.

The wires do thread onto the terminals in the coils and the caps. A dab of dielectric grease then screw them on to the coil and cap. Make sure the rubber boots seal up around the wires.

I will run out to a buddies Mk IV tomorrow and pull some measurements for you. I am sure that with all the variations in engines, and cowlings you can get, there is no one hard fast thrust line. What engine are you planning on using?

I will go take a look at one tomorrow. I know the caps screw on, and every other coil I have seen screwed the wire into it and that is all that holds it on.

  22. akflyer added a post in a topic Needle Tachs suck!

Been there done that. Every needle tach I have seen is way off on the top end. I have seen, just as you have, a perfectly good kitfox or avid turned into an anemic piece of shit due to turning 750 to 1000 RPM low on take off.. hell, that is barely a good cruise RPM let alone trying to take off.

Glad you got it figured out! I used the hole my needle tach was in for the fuel flow meter. Best trade I ever did

I use a Garmin 295 color and while it is a great GPS, I used my brothers 495 and now am kicking rocks at mine. The screen, terrain avoidance etc kick the crap out of the 295. He found a place to lease the 495 for 10 months at 150 a month, then it's yours. Makes it a little easier than putting out 1500 up front when you could be using that for gas to fly!

  24. akflyer added a post in a topic Hello?

I am back from the trip.. was good flying most of the time, but the trip up sucked when I got separated from Mark in a snow storm and his radio was on the fritz (ended up being a loose antenna wire). I ended up making the cabin the first night, but Mark had to set down on the river about 20 miles from the cabin and spend the night at a lodge. Weather cleared up the next morning and he made it to the cabin. Spent 3 days burning lots of expensive gas, having waaaayyy to many toddies at the Cabin and lodge down the lake.

Hopefully the pics and vids came out so when I get done downloading them I will edit and post the up.
