I will second the Gopro! I have one and love it, however... It does have its draw backs. As with any CMOS camera, it does not like shooting through the prop arc. You get nice squigly lines in the shot. I have mounted mine on the wing strut and the float spreader bar to get away from the prop disc. I got some great video snowmachining and boating with it as well. I have not put the boating vids up on you tube yet, but I should get some time to edit and post them up here pretty quick so you can see the quality of the vids.

The one major draw back to the gopro, is not having a screen on board to be able to view your pics or vids. You have to plug into a computer to watch them. Not that big of a deal as long as you get a big enough video card and just let it run the whole trip. Spring for the good 32 gig card, and make sure it is high speed or it wont capture right and you will have dropped frames.

Holy shit! Look who is still alive and kicking!!!

Welcome back Steve.. You know how boring it is when one of the original mis-fits who loves to stir the pot does not come around

  3. akflyer added a post in a topic 582 VS 912S

I am willing to bet that my fuel burn will be less with the 800 than what I am getting now with the 582. I know that riding side by side with my 06 600 crossfire and a buddies 08 800 he out did me pretty good between tanks. More than once, I had to use my extra 2.5 gallons as well as his to get back to the parking lot. I am hoping to get this on a test stand and ran with the gear box and prop while I am off next hitch. 3 weeks should be plenty of time for me to get it on the stand if all goes according to plan <yeah, like that has worked out so far for me...

Last week was the first time in a year that I had flown my plane on wheels.... Man, that lit the fire under me to get on this 800 conversion. I want the performance I have on wheels, when I am on floats! I forgot what 1200+ FPM climb was like

While I dont have an performance numbers for you, I would say that if you have the ability to put the 912 in the nose, do so and you will not be dissapointed! I would love to have one in mine, but I just cant justify the $$ for it right now... Perhaps once the big "D" is finalized and I know how long I will be in the poor house I can start planning for a future upgrade, but for now, I am happy with my 582 on wheels, but I really do want more power for floats next spring! The adapter plate should be machined and ready for me next time home so I can get back to work on the 800 conversion... Fuel injected 125-140 HP at the same weight as the 582 should be a hoot!

Congrats on the solo!!! I have found more than once that switching instructors can really help you out. Several times I have knows guys that hit a rutt and just could not seem to get over the wall, but a different instructor was able to point out a few things the previous instructor had not shown them and they moved on quickly.

Having it go flat in flight does not make it a bear on landing. I have had it happen before a couple times and it was a total non-event. The only way I really knew it was flat was the extra bumping on the pavement as I taxied back in to the tie down.

The lil bipe looks intersting! Is that your design? I have been toying with an idea of scaling up a model airplane that has been around forever and making it a true 4 place aircraft. If the real one would fly half as good as the model does, it would be one hell of a performer!

    Not a dumb question...

You can use a hypodermic needle filled with poly tack and stick the fabric back down. You can also get an oven bag and lay it out of the rib, then get out the Iron and go over the fabric. You may want to get what they call a hot mitt used for model aircraft covering. You can iron the fabric back down, then rub over the area with the hot mit. Do not pull the Oven bag off the fabric till it cools.

You can also put some acetone on a cloth and remove all the paint down to bare fabric in the areas you need to fix, then use thinned poly tak and go over the cap strip area and push the glue back in. Using heavy Nitrile gloves, you can work over the area with your fingers and really get the fabric back down good! What is the wing painted with" If it is poly tone the acetone will take it right off. If it is areothane, you have more issues and it is a pain in the ass to fix properly. I knew that with my style of flying, I will be out in the brush and getting holes poked in the covering on a regular basis, so I went with Poly tone becuase filed repairs are so easy to do with it!

Welcome aboard! Like Randy said, dont worry about your writing, and post up pics along the way! Never hesitate to ask a question about the build either, we have a pretty good knowledge base here.

Yes, alot of guys went to just the belly mount radiator. I have not had any issues with mine since I went with just the belly mount!

You also need to go by the Avid directions. You cant shrink the fabric as tight as polyfiber tells you to or it will pull away from the underside of the ribs and really pull your trailing edge in. I think the MAX I went was 275. I would not go up the center. You will need to cut it on the inside of the rib on each panel so the old covering has the full 1" bonded to the cap strip. You can lay the new fabric over to the outside of the rib so it fully covers the cap strip also. Then use 4" wide tape for the seam on each side and your golden. No need to do any sewing.

I doubt the cub guys are running the ultralight fabric.. We use medium and heavy when building the cubs, and the mauls are go fast machines that have the heavier fabric also.

The kid doing his thing in the ring
Friday the kid has his second MMA fight in the cage... He had to earn this one as he about bought it in the 3rd round when he found himself in a guillotine. Just before he passed out he relaxed enough to slip out and get some blood back in his head..

When you replace the rib tails, hang the flaperon on your wing, and use it for a guide in getting the new rib tails lined up. I did not do that on my first wing. I pulled measurements 100 ways from sunday and was sure I had it right.. but then had to get creative when it was time to hang the flaperon on it. The second wing, I hung the flaperon and used it as a guide to line up the rib tails with lots of clamps and aluminum agle for a straight edge to lock everything in tight while glue cured. I used gorrila glue to put the cap strips on, and the structural epoxy to glue it to the spar. I ran several tests with some spare rib tails and cap strips I had and the gorrila glue held the best and did the most damage to the wood when I pulled it to failure.

The CFI can give instruction, he just need X time as PIC in your plane before he can instruct. I think it is 5 hrs but I could be wrong. I went through this on mine 2 yrs ago. If the seller is a CFI, he had give you official "instruction" if he is just a PPL then he can take you for a ride, let you control the plane and give you an "un-official" check out, but it wont be worth anything for insurance or a tail wheel endorsement.

Do you have any time in an Avid or Kitfox? If not, the first time you fly one, you will be throwing rocks at that 172. I like flying all planes, but the avids or kitfoxes are really just that much more fun to fly!

I thought that is what you were talking about but wanted to make sure.. Easy easy fix and us dont need brass! Just use a piece of safety wire and heat it up and burn a hole in the tubing side to side and top to bottom in the center of the tubing. It just help to equalize the pressure in the float bowl. This is what the rotax repair manual shows to do. When I get back to my other computer I will see if I can find a good shot of what I am talking about.

Is there anyway you could post a picture of what your missing from the other carb? Nothing should lean it at altitude, unless you have a HACMAN or something of that sort. If you have Mikunies, you may be running a snogo engine. The 582 came with Bings.

Thats what we are here for! Glad it was something that easy for you! I hate not knowing, and spending time trying to fix something that is not broken, and electrical issues can be a nightmare especially if it is intermittent!

By the way, welcome aboard the fun avid/kitfox site! We try to stay on track here, but sometimes the fun gets in the way and we cut up a bit.. That is always welcome here!

Do you have primer or mixture enricheners? I cant see someone putting a 582 in the avid without electric start, but hey, stranger things have been done...

If you have a primer, give it a couple shots, if you have enricheners the throttle has to be set to idle for them to work. If you add throttle you will bypass the enrichener circuit and and it wont do you any good.

Did you verify that you have no spark, or just because it is not firing you are assuming no spark?

Try it with mag switches both ways. I assume you are using a pull start.. it has to hit 250+ RPM to fire so you have to rip it over good. I had a buddy that fought the same issue.. turn out he had the mag switch wired backwards so "on" was really "off"

damn, it was easier to find than I thought must be getting organized in my old age..

Tweak it to fit your plane, but it gives you a good format to start with.

  24. akflyer added a post in a topic Condition inspection time..582 checklist?

Rotax has the engine checklist to go over. It tells you what checks they suggest at what intervals. As the plane is an experimental, you can do what you want to with it. Must check items include the fuel system on the engine, hoses etc, rotary valve oil hoses coolant hoses etc. Check seals make sure none are leaking, compression check... Anyone running a 2 stroke should have a compression gauge. Mine is in the tool bag I carry in the plane at all times. I will see if I can dig up the form I used at my last condition inspection. I know there are several of them under the files tab on the yahoo avid list. Some items do not pertain to us 2 stroke guys so I suggest you remove those from the list and modify it to fit your own plane. If you have a blank spot, the A&P is gonna spend time checking to see if he can figure out how to fill that blank.

I will post mine up as soon as I get a chance to dig it up

I have mixed emotions on the doublers. I have seen several of them that ended up trapping moisture and the tails rotted (mine was one of them). I just went with lots of sealer and a good coat of paint on mine and so far they are holding up great. If would venture to say that if you are keeping your plane in a hangar where it can stay dry, or have the chance to dry out if it gets wet, the doubles are a great idea. If it lives outside like mine does, I would not put them on.
