If he wants the best, get the Alaska Bush Wheels 26" experimental tires. They are 2000 for a set, but work awesome.

Is he looking to play around off airport in the grass etc, or hardcore bush flying. If he is just wanting to hit gravel and grass strips etc. he can look for a set of 850's prefferably the older 4 ply so the side walls are no so stiff.

He may be able to look around at places like www.supercub.org and see if anyone has a set of older 24's or something of that nature for sale. Alot of guys are upgrading to the 31" bush wheels and have the older ones for sale at a reasonable price.

I have been giving it alot of thought and as much as I would love to fly the entire way, I am thinking more along the lines of trailering to the border then flying once I am back in the good ole USA. That would eliminate alot of possible weather issues in Canada and I can be state side in 3 days no matter what.

Sorry for your loss Joey, you and the family are in our thoughts and prayers. It has been a rough month having lost three very good friends myself in the last 3 weeks. Just a reminder to live each day as if its your last because we just never know when our number is up.

I am jealous! Our local EAA is not real active. I am also jealous of you guys that are alot closer to the action to be able to fly around and hit these flyins. One of these days, hopefully soon I will load up with a few buddies and make the flight down there and check out how the rest of the US are flying. We are lucky to have a couple flyins a year, and nothing major like you boys have down there.

Bout time for you folks to start planning a hell of an adventure and get a big group to fly up here and see some serious country! Lots of killer fishing, camping and wide open flying adventures to be had around here.

I will keep up on your fly in Lonnie and see if I can break away from work long enough to come down and play with you guys.

So whats the scoop on the sea ray?? Have you flown it yet?

I was lost without a plane, hopefully you have access to one so you can still get out and about when the urge strikes!

  7. akflyer added a post in a topic Tailwheel Tension Springs

I have the same issue... One link and they are loose or too tight. I am going to make a new bar that is bolted to the rudder that will offset just a hair so I can have the proper tension on the springs. I like it a little loose so it will go to full caster easier, but not so loose that it will go full caster when you dont want it to (see the video I posted). So, you either run them loose and have damn good brakes so you can hold the track of the airplane on brakes alone, or you run the chains tighter so you will have positive steering on the tail wheel no matter what. I chose to get the better brake pedals (they are in the mail now) and masters so I can run them loose and have great braking power!

I went through it with my dad. days of delirium with a few coherent moments in between. The hardest thing I ever did was bringing him home from the hospital knowing it would be the last time I saw him. A week after I left he passed after a long hard battle. I dont wish this on anyone, and I can truly feel your pain! Hang in there Joey.

    Veterans Day
Just wanted to give a big shout out to all the veterans on here and around the world! Thanks for your sacrifices keeping us safe and protecting our freedoms here and abroad! Without you we would not be enjoying all we have today!

  11. akflyer added a post in a topic Mechanical Brakes

I flew a buddies Avid "A" with the drum mechanical brakes.. You may as well just cut a hole in the floor boars and do a lil Fred and Barney routine to stop. If the plane ever starts to get away from you on the ground, you are going for a ride and wont be able to hold it inline with the brakes!

I have dealt with the crappy brakes on my plane for a couple years because I spend very little time on wheels, its either floats or ski's for the most part. After my last incident where I came real close to wadding it up in the trees on a narrow runway because the tail wheel unlocked on me and I could not hold it with the brakes, I ordered up better rudder pedals and masters.

If you want them, I will send you the stock rudder pedals and the MC-1 masters that I have and you can have them. You would still need the calipers but it will be a good head start for you and they are 1000 times better than the mechanical ones!

You can re-thread the rods on the masters and drop the mounting tabs on the pedals down and get better breaking action as that is what AKFLYERBOB did on his KF. I just didnt want to spend the time to do that on mine (ok I was feeling too lazy and time at home is at a premium for me right now)

Let me know if you want them as I should be doing the swap when I get home in a few weeks.

I gotta agree with you for the most part.. The only way anyone could stop me from flying would be to put me in jail.. a piece of plastic saying I am a pilot means nothing to me. I just hope the day never comes that I loose the ability to fly due to being too goofy to remember where to put the key to get the damn thing started

  13. akflyer added a post in a topic Buying my new Avid

damn, I just realized I missed a question here... I shoot for 6150 to 6200 on the ground, and it will normaly unload to around 6500 on take off when your rolling. The peak HP and tq is right at 6500 so that is what I shoot for on take off and climb.

Jezz, where the hell ya been?? any new thoughts on the avid now that hopefully you have more time on her??

Mine was a Navy Jet Jock. Great guy, but by the book on most things.

Um, if he has an erocoupe, does that not meet the requirements for a light sport I would much rather ride my Avid in on an engine out, than take a 172 in for an off airport excursion. Once you get some time in the Avid, you will see that an Avid or KF is about the most fun you can have in the air!

Sea level at 5800 I burn 5 to 5.2 GPH depending on OAT. At 3500' I burn right about 4.7 to 5. I rarely fly above 3500 unless it is to cross the inlet and that is only about 15 minutes flight time and I have not paid much attention to the fuel burn at 4500-5000 for those few minutes I am there (about the time I hit 5000 I pull the power and start the slow descent back to 50' AGL on the other side of the inlet.

cripes... Duhh, I am feeling a lil slow now. I forgot about the plastic wing tanks. I was kinda confused on the wingtank model versus the fiberglass

Are both tanks fiberglass If so, I would have gone ethanol proof, if I was states side. We dont have ethanol gas up here so I would be fine with the standard tanks. If he is building them new, then the resin used should be ethanol proof on both models of tanks.

We must have had the same DPE, cause he did the same crap to me! Not just with the PP, but float rating too. Back when I was doing the training and renting his planes, I had to give him a ration of shit for it. I was dumb founded that he had done most of my training, my X country, and I was allowed to take the planes hunting etc, yet he would not just give me the check ride or sign me off... I told him he must have lots of confidence in himself to let me rent his planes, go off airport hunting, landing on the sides of a mountain etc, yet would not sign me off till I was recommended by another instructor. He was a great guy, but too much military time and was BY THE BOOK!

At any rate, congrats on the sign off, now go have fun!

    HELL TO GET OLD...

Two medical students were walking along the street when they saw an old man walking with his legs spread apart. He was stiff-legged and walking slowly.
One student said to his friend: "I'm sure that poor old man has Peltry Syndrome. Those people walk just like that."
The other student says: "No, I don't think so. The old man surely has Zovitzki Syndrome. He walks slowly and his legs are apart, just as we learned in class."
Since they couldn't agree they decided to ask the old man. They approached him and one of the students said to him, "We're medical students and couldn't help but notice the way you walk, but we couldn't agree on the syndrome you might have. Could you tell us what it is?"
The old man said, "I'll tell you, but first you tell me what you two fine medical students think."
The first student said, "I think it's Peltry Syndrome."
The old man said, "You thought - but you are wrong."
The other student said, "I think you have Zovitzki Syndrome."
The old man said, "You thought - but you are wrong."
So they asked him, "Well, old timer, what do you have?"
The old man said, "I thought it was GAS - but I was wrong, too!"

    Ex- Wifes Plane Crash
My ex-wife started taking flying lessons about the time our divorce started and she got her license shortly before our divorce was final, later that same year.

Yesterday afternoon I got a phone call, that she narrowly escaped injury in the aircraft she was piloting. Seems she was forced to make an emergency landing in Hamilton because of bad weather. Thank God the kids weren't with her.

The FAA issued a preliminary report, citing pilot error: She was flying a single engine aircraft in IFR (instrument flight rating) conditions while only having obtained a VFR (visual flight rating) rating.

The absence of a post-crash fire was likely due to insufficient fuel on board. No one on the ground was injured.

The photograph below was taken at the scene to show the extent of damage to her aircraft.

    She was really lucky.

OK Randy, whats the good word? Hope you have been able to get some more time on her. Have you gotten any performance numbers yet? If I ever find an alternate and get more than a couple days off I will give you a ring and buzz up there and check the new ride out!

I dont think that many are running a regulator. I too have an electric back up pump and use it just to prime and also to boost in instances where my fuel filter was plugging up. I dont see a need for a regulator unless you are running fuel injection.

Wow, I have not seen the digital instruments with the AVID factory logo. I like them! I think they would look better in my panel than your

I was under the impression that the crome pedals and sticks did not come out till the model IV. Do you have the rounded rudder or squared off? How about the cowling? A pic of the cowling and radiators that were supplied with the kit would help out.

Mine came in at 581# empty (was kinda funny because it weight 581, has a 582 in the nose and is serial number 584). It was weighed on non certified scales, and next time home I am going to put it in a buddies hangar and hang it on his digital certified scale and see what it really comes in at for weight. I went light on the paint on mine, but went with Meduim fabric because I like to drag mine through the brush and small trees.. I wanted the extra tear resistance According to the book, I only added a few pounds over all by going with the medium fabric. I am sure I can lighten it up more by getting rid of the heavy tires that I have also. I picked up a fiberglass panel for mine so I can get rid of the heavy aluminum panel that it came with. I also plan on gettting rid of some of the instruments in the panel and doing all I can to lighten it up, but I doubt I will ever get it as light as I would like it to be!

If you fly in cold weather, I would keep the electric start.
