Make sure the extra length of seatbelt is secured or it will flap against the fuselage ,because when it happens it will scare five years off your life!

  3. Dusty added a post in a topic proper Idle for 582

Ground vs air idling is a often debated point, even with 35 idle jets and the idle stop screws all the way back I car get much below 1800 rpm but a little rough below 2400
approach rpm tends to sit around 3000 and on rollout requires additional throttle to stop chatter, slower idle speed gives a slightly steeper approach but has little effect on landing speed.
remember on finals stick controls airspeed, throttle decent rate

A good idea is to add a"u" shaped plastic moulding to the bottom of the windscreen,it saves wet feet or worse still, water in the electrics

The hollow treaded rod is the vacuum source ,this the basis for the unit, best tap off both carbs. If your carbs don't have the tapping already done I would suggest finding a set of later body's (seems to be all late silver top and all blues have them)
the fitting you refer to in the picture is for priming, I thinkI posted a schematic a short while ago of how I set up my mixture control,
well worth the effort once sorted

  6. Dusty added a post in a topic Belly tank

This bladder tank is 15 litres(6gal?) it is the smallest available the next size is 25 litres
EDMO is spot on regarding tip tanks, a few years ago I got to fly a cavalier with tip tanks, the inertia made hard work keeping balanced in turbulence, something our planes aren't great at,they don't need any encouragement to tail wag.

I hope this fits. My measurements say it will fit perfect nz$500. About the same price as an  aluminium slip in tank, but can be fitted  in my locker without surgery and venting issues. This manufacturer was reluctant to supply for my "off  road vehicle" so one of my boat builder customers has ordered one for me. I will  update when i have more information

  8. Dusty added a post in a topic Tiny Tach Setting

It does seem a shame and inconvenience to throw away the whole unit just for the sake of a 50cent battery,                                      Perhaps someday we may see a "similar" unit from another source with a user replaceable battery, who wouldn't buy one!
I run two tiny tachs ,one is three the other is four years old, five year life?

I have been carrying extra fuel in my cargo pod,on the cg is best but I have safety concerns about fuel carried underneath in the event of a bad day.EDMO found some good looking fuel bladders that might work(bladders are simple as far as venting is concerned)the price was ok but freight was a shocker.
I found a local supplier who make bladder tanks for rescue boats,Thera is a 15litre tank that looks like it will fit in a wing locker it should be ready in a short while.I will post how it works out

Don't feel bad or daunted,I took 5 hrs longer than it should to get rated and another 5 to get comfortable,
the transition for me took longer and was more frustrating than learning to fly,the mark on the screen really helps

  11. Dusty added a post in a topic Odd to Me 2-Stroke Running Characteristics

The hacman should work on the 670,the rave valves start to open around 6500 rpm
fix the valves in the shut position,(20 thousands of an inch clearance?)
we recently were playing with a 618, manually opening the valves below 6400 rpm bogged the motor.
Rave valves are a great idea for their intended use in snow mobiles where a wide power band is desirable up to rpm we never want t see, power valves are high maintenance , aluminium ones have broken and destroyed  many 618's

Grey/ blue top it doesn't matter which engine but the early carbs don't have the vacuum tapping.
A very simple to install and use systym

I believe the "hacman" to be easier to install  and very user friendly ,there is plenty online covering this setup,a must have on a cross country 2 stroke it works well.
clip on top of the plastic retainer!  Ouch

  14. Dusty added a post in a topic Gday from the new boy and seeking advice!

    Hi tim
Our exchange rate /dollar value is not too far different here (nz),a similar aircraft here is nz$30-35000.
Looks like a nice plane, but weight is a major factor,as someone else said go for a ride and see if the climb is acceptable.
A 1200pound model is more desirable and will have a better resale value,
The 582 is an awesome and totally reliable power plant
    Love the drifter!
I have a XP 503 and is still by far my favourite aircraft to fly, but our cooler climate limets flying

What are your egt's doing when you get the bump ,they are slow to react so you may have to loiter in the rough area .
does it feel like it is trying to 4 stroke?it would have to be way rich and show low egt
check that the screens are on the float chamber, bings don't like to run smooth without them.
    as a sideline ,oil injection
we set for an average of 70:1 I had a fiddle with he adjustment to be sure my 670 project would get enough oil,the standard setup will deliver up to40:1 average which I would estimate is around 30:1 at full throttle.
i don't think any more oil would be an advantage!
be wary of adding excess oil to premix, the fuel air ratio will change, also excess oil increases he risk of detonation by affectivly lowering the fuel octane

  16. Dusty added a post in a topic Beginner Take Offs and Landings

I am not an instructor so take this as an opinion only and get advice from an instructor .
I am not a fan of the long flat approach,if the fire goes out at the wrong time you may have a bad day
try (at altitude first)getting on the back of the drag curve.
if you are currently on final at 60kts and getting 500fpm decent try 45-45 kts you will get a slightly higher sink rate and a much steeper approach, your airspeed will be easier to control using the stick,be prepared to give a stab of power on round out if the sink is a little high(kitfoxes and Avids can run out of elevator at this point)
Now imagine an engine failure over those trees, check forward get back on the "step"a flatter decent, you will most likely get to the runway
this is how I was taught,it works for my plane.
your plane/approach speeds may be quite different.

Had time to sit and watch and rewatch some parts, very relevant!
a must watch for all taildragger pilots,we are never to old/experienced to learn something new.

  20. Dusty added a post in a topic The First Time Out

I would stay on the grass,I agree with Ed no high speed taxi runs, low speed or go fly!
a kitfox is most vulnerable in the slowing down phase of the landing and needs to be kept under accurate control
It depends on your instructors preference  but I was taught to three point, but after hundreds of hours/landings I believe a tail low wheeler is best in all but a direct into wind landing as the rudder is more affective.
even to the point of adding power while braking(20 kts gusting 25 direct across the runway a few weeks ago the rudder was there when required)a three pointer would have ended in tears!

  22. Dusty added a post in a topic Door Latch Options

A single latch at the front works but a passenger leaning on the door tends to pop the door open((that really gets their attention)
I intend to fit a house window latch on either side at the bottom.(the 90degree turn that works a hinged flap)
These get used here often and are good at pulling the doors snug against the seals.
This type can only be used from the inside but work well.

  23. Dusty added a post in a topic KF3 with rotax 670 on floats

The difference in weight 582vs670 is regularly quoted as 10pounds,the crank is heavier and the barrels are only slightly bigger.
The correct exhaust is a Lot bigger, but awesome power to weight!
Even a warm engine will nip up under the right conditions,20 seconds at a high power setting is cheap insurance

  24. Dusty added a post in a topic KF3 with rotax 670 on floats

Maybe it's the exhaust but the 670 has a distinctive sound.
It would be harder(without a clutch) to do a runup on floats, but from shutdown to full power with a two stroke is asking for a cold seizure and once agin the engine (especially a 670)will get blamed.
    But still impressive,thanks for posting.
