Depending on the prop that was on the motor a prop strike may not be that bad for a 912.

It does NOT mean a full tear down like a certified motor.  It would require pulling the gear box to check it for runout and gear damage.  (Not difficult)  If the gearbox is okay, most likely the crank is too.

Where is it?  How many hours?  What kind of damage did the plane suffer?  (nose over or just 'looped with folded gear causing a nick to the tips?)  These answers will determine if the $7500 is still a good number.

If the s/n checks out as not needing any further work per the logs (through 2006), I would offer to pay for the gear box inspection at LEAF, Lockwood or CPS if he takes it off and sends it in.  If the 'box checks out, then the number is pretty good for 600 (1200 TBO) or less hours.  If not, you are only out at most a hundred bucks for the inspection.

    akflyer,

Have you had a chance to see if F7a will fit early Kitfox?

    Thanks

    Dave

No sir, I am apparently an ass and I forgot all about this when I got home and got swamped.  :nutkick:   I get one of these for failing to check it out.

    Robert,

Rod just told me - look at "fng post" in Introduce Yourself - that the STOL tanks wont work with the speedwing ribs because of the TOP profile?  WELL - If yours worked, why not others?

If memory serves me - we talked about adding another layer of rib caps on top, but you did some grinding and got them to work without adding any caps like I did.

Ed it's not "they won’t work", the tanks I manufacture have a slight variation in the wing profile and if you want to fly then I say go for it and make it work. That’s what experimental is all about.

    Thanks for the reply Rod,

I added the rib on bottom of my undercamber Kitfox-type tanks when I made the Riblett modification to my wings - That worked for me - Didn't know that the top of speedwing ribs were different contour than the Avid STOL.  At least he can get tanks from Airdale, if he can ever find Brett.

    EDMO

added - Robert just told me that he got your STOL tanks to work in his speedwing - see his post in "Parts for Sale" in Avid and Kitfox Parts Suppliers.  I now remember when he did that - so, if they work for him.......?

    ED

Hey ED i do sell the tanks to Brett. If anyone wants a set then send me an e-mail. i will take some pics of the ribs then let youall be the judge.

EG are you referring to the filler neck you sent me? Yes I did get it however I am still in the Middle East on my deployment. Hoping to be home soon and then I get to have my own mini Christmas going through the mound of stuff I have ordered over the last 7 months. I figured that engine was really old and had issues for that price. Thanks a ton again for sending that part!! Joey

I guess I could take a chance on it and send the gearbox to Av8r3400 to fix.  Looks like he is going to be a 912 gearbox pro when he gets through sorting his out!!

ps Leni did you get the part I sent you?

I think you are right to avoid this one - A prop strike requires that the engine be torn down and the crank checked in any engine.  With this one, the redrive may also be damaged - and other parts.

    Thanks, staying away from Ebay

I've been talking with the guy on Barnstromers.  It's a 17 yr old engine that's just come off a KF that was ground looped and had a prop strike.  No entries in the engine log since 2006.  He wont come off his asking price.  Maybe I'm wrong but just a few too many issues for that $.

Looking at the video, I would guess that he has a Kitfox 4 or 5 - I didn't pay that much attention to which model.

I just started this to try to find out if there were differences between Avid and Kitfox and what models.

All of the fittings for finger screens that I have seen are 3/8 male NPT, with a 1/4 female NPT hole in them.

However, I believe I have seen some Avid fittings which look smaller.

The 3/8 NPT is much larger than any of the other 3/8 fittings - probably about 3/4 inch diameter.  It is now listed as 3/8 MIT, or Male International (Thread, or Taper?) but I think it is the same as the old NPT.

Kitfox uses a Permatex 9AR sealant, and I think Leni posted the other sealant which works good, or maybe the other numbers for this same sealant.

Sometimes the threads in the tanks need to be refreshed with an NPT tap, but use caution not to get them too large.

    Hope this helps.

Beware of scams on ebay - dHolly and I got involved in one of these 912 "bargains" this year - looked like a way to hack your puter, or your money!

Thanks for the info - it is my understanding that the cables are supported at the end of the housing, and would have to be disconnected before folding wings.

No problem either way - I just didn't understand why my KF1&2 wings would fold without disconnecting, and the video Crazed Pilot put on u-tube shows him disconnecting controls to fold wings - looks like a later model Kitfox on there.
