    The old pilot
An old Pilot sat down at the Starbucks and ordered a cup of coffee. As he sat sipping his coffee, a beautiful young woman sat down next to him...

She turned to the pilot and asked, 'Are you a real pilot?'

He replied, 'Well, I've spent my whole life flying Cubs, Aeroncas, Stearman, Cessna, Beechcraft and many others. I flew in WWII, in a B-29 and later in the Korean conflict, I've taught over 100 people to fly and gave rides to probably thousands. So I guess, yeah, I am a pilot.'

She said, 'I'm a lesbian. I spend my whole day thinking about naked women. As soon as I get up in the morning, I think about naked women. When I shower, I think about naked women. When I watch TV, I think about naked women. It seems everything makes me think of naked women.'

The two continued to sit, sipping their coffee in silence.

A little while later, a young man sat down on the other side of the old pilot and asked, 'Are you a real pilot?'

He replied, 'I always thought I was, but I just found out I'm a lesbian.'

Hey Randy. Posting pics is easy... just click the button that says click to attach files and then navigate to where ever you have the pics on your computer... I have a new 582 starter sitting on the bench. I can ship it up to you if it will get you into the air quicker. I am leaving Tuesday for 2 weeks at work, but if the weather permits, I will be flying up your way when I get back.. I have a buddy that has a place on fish creek lake that I hope to hang at for a few days. I will be ferrying in fuel from willow so I should be able to swing by Wolf Lake and check out the fat bastard.

if you are going to use a water heater, you wont get enough flow out of the 1/8" line to do anything. The 2 I have flown with water heaters were plumbed inline on the main water lines. you can get the old heater valves out of a dodge van that will allow you to pull the heater knob and bypass the system so you can shut it off on the winter.

I am using a muffler heater we made, and it will keep the chill off at about-10. at 10 or 15 degrees, I am flying in blue jeans and a light jacket with no gloves. I can try and get some pics tomorrow of the set up on mine, and the one I put on wagonmasters MK IV. they both work great!

That was kind of my thinking with the direct drive setups, I am still lookiing for first hand knowledge about the redrive setup. The $10,000.00 price tag is the problem, I know that people are flying with subarus and that has to be about a 250 pound engine where as a continental 0-200 or lycoming 235 weighs 200 to 240 pounds and a used engine can be bought for $3,000.00 or $4,000.00. the prices are better but do they work in an Avid. My first choice, on paper anyway would be the jabiru but how much power does the engine make at a speed where a 70 inch prop works.

Back when I was still looking for a plane, I chatted with a guy who had a direct drive VW in a Just Escapade (similar design to a Kitfox). He said it worked okay, but was not optimum. Take off run was long, over 700' and climb was ~500 fpm. Not good for a Just. (Just uses the Avid airfoil with internal flaps and ailerons) That airplane with a 912UL 80 hp would be off in 200' and climb 1500 fpm or better.

A direct drive VW will only make 60-70 hp on a good day. This is at a high rpm, 3700 rpm plus. This means you would need a relatively short propeller (50" ?) which may not offer the performance on a slow airplane. Especially around the round cowl on a Kitfox.

Used Rotax 912 motors are around for a decent price, less than $10k, you just need to be patient and jump when you see one. In these airplanes, I just don't see anything else on the market that is viable.

One of my EAA chapter mates has a Jabiru 2200 in a Zenair. It works well in that application. This or the 3300 could be another viable engine option.

    VW engine in an Avid/Fox
I am looking for people who have actually flown VW powered Avid/ Kitfox aircraft. Is it enough power ? W/B ? fuel consumption? Climb? Direct or Redrive? I am not sure wich way I want to go but 2 strokes have always made me nervous other than the VW, Corvair or Subaru I don't see an alternative that doesn't cost as much as a certified engine and most have about the same weight the days of cheap alternative power seem to be behind us . Like I said I want info on how it worked the VW site is just a bunch of people telling you that it can't work otherwise I would bvother them.

Everything you want to know (and some you don't want to know) about flying in Canada:

    http://www.tc.gc.ca/CivilAviation/general/recavi/Brochures/flyingtocanada.htm
For Amateur Built/Experimental US aircraft you need this:

    http://www.tc.gc.ca/civilaviation/maintenance/regsdocs/validation.htm

A valid US Passport is required to re-enter the United States.

Also, no guns may be transported in Canada without a permit.

Open question to all of the experts out there: I have no immediate plans, but in the future a flight to or through Canada may be happening.

What is the procedure (at this time) to cross the border, legally, into Canada and return to the US?

    Thanks.

I had a 670 in my Avid when I first bought it. It also came with a 582 that the biulder had originally installed and then changed to the 670. I flew it with the 670 for about 250 hours until it had a rod bearing let go and nuked the engine. God was taking care of me because when it "popped" the first time I was about 15 miles east of the haul road up the Ivashak River and had just dropped a load of hunting gear. I had just taken off for load two when it "popped". It kept running normally for another couple of minutes and then started missing occasionally. I turned for the haul road and started praying; I was able to hold altitude and when I made it over the Sag River and to the haul road I breathed a sigh of relief; I was about 500' and it was missing almost constantly. I started loosing about 100 fpm and since I only had single ignition on my 670 I thought if I had dropped a plug wire or something I could probably just add power and maybe hold altitude. As soon as I added power it gave a bang and the fan in front became a single blade in front of the nose. I didn't do my best landing but at least I made it down and stopped with the plane and I in one piece.

That said, when I got the plane back home I switched it for the 582 and thought I would see a huge decrease in performance. There was some but not nearly as much as I thought. I can't say my plane is a stellar performer, probably becuase is is not the lightest MK IV and I set the prop so I cruise about 82 - 84 mph at 5700 - 5800 rpm. This puts my static rpm at only around 5800 - 5900 rather than 6200 rpm. At any rate, with the 670 I was only able to get off at around 300' with no wind and climb was around 900 fpm. The 582 gets off at 350' and climbs at around 700 fpm. This is at medium weight with baggage full of gear and 20 gal but solo. I was expecting a lot of difference between the 670 and the 582 but it wasn't as big as I thought it would be.

OK. go ahead and tell me what a poor performing plane mine is.

Bill I've found that I get decent heat up through the holes where my bungees are off the belly radiator. It was so bad this summer I filled them foam. I've also got a little door on the right side to deflect the air from my side radiator into the cabin. It's not much but keeps the edge off.

    Hi Leni,

Well I thought I better say something or you will give up on all of us. I hope to have mine flying by early summer so if I am lucky it will make it by late summer (I need it for hunting season). If I could figure out how to post pictures to the site I would post some. I have my fusalage covered and painted; interior in; doors on; Subaru EA81 built and installed with dual nose radiators and carb heat, FWF done, cowling modified and done; built new landing gear 5 1/2" taller than the Airdale wide gear and with 3 attachment points on the fusalage instead of 2, (gear and wheels are on but will change to 26" bushwheels when I take my Avid down), raised skylite by 1" in front and 2 1/2 " in rear to clear my head better; strobe, tail and dual landing lights installed, Installed MGL E1 Engine monitor and Flight 2 primary flight instruments - very cool, these two instruments give: tach 1, hobbs, 2 EGT, 2 CHT, oil press, water temp, set alarms, tach 2, hobbs 2, setable maintenance time , volts, airspeed, altimeter, vert speed, TAS, setable high and low airspeed alarms, OAT, density alt, fuel guage or fuel settings, fuel flow, fuel bingo, time and distance to fuel bingo at airspeed, reat time clock, timer, alarms, etc, etc....all backlit. I hope I don't regret the choice verses steam guages. They sure give you a lot of info and they are very lite. I built a recessed mount for my Garmin 196, battery installed in rear of cargo area, main electrical is done. On waiting list for the new ACK 406 ELT. I don't want to have to install my old 121.5 from the Avid since it is worthless but still checks the legal requirement if I can't get a reasonable 406. The panel is done except for the radio and intercomm since I will use the ones out of my Avid. My Avid wings have been fitted so they will plug on, I still have to transfer the wings, comm, brakes, horizontal stab, elect trim, rudder pedals and sticks. Since I don't have a heated hangar my progress is slow this time of year. Once Temps get back above freazing I will be going at it full tilt again. It will be dificult to finally take the Avid down for good though and transfer the parts.

I went out to fly today but my starter on the Avid bit the dust. I always wonder if I should just start start taking it apart but I couldn't take the thought of not getting some more ski flying in this winter so I pulled the starter out and ordered a new one. Hopefully it will be here by next weekend so I can get back in the air. If you are going to do a trip toward Palmer, Big Lake, Skwentna or anywhere in this neck of the woods, let me know and I will try to meet up with you. If you want to take a look at the Fat Avid, you will have to coach me through posting pictures (if it is possible using dial-up) or fly out to Wolf lake where my hangar is. I'll buy lunch.

Personally if I was to add a water type heater core I would connect it in line with the radiator, an1/8 inch supply would not give much flow.

I'm really not sure what process formed the rock outcroppings, but they are impressive. Serpentine Hot Springs comes up on Google Earth. The resolution is quite poor at the Springs (can't even really make out the airstrip) but to the south some outcroppings are clearly discernible.

    Heater help
I'm trying to install a heater in the Avid. The question is can I use the 1/8 inch port on the Rotax water pump housing and then connect it to the elbow on the other side? I think the water pump side is the pressure side and the return elbow on the other side is low pressure. I'm sure someone has done this, just so I get it right. Sure appreciate the help, again.
