    Rotax 583 Jetting (Not 582!)
Anybody running a Rotax 583 RAVE (Not 582) on their Avid? Need jetting info for the 583.

My new project has a new 583 RAVE, which the original builder was going to install a TBI on. But because the 2 cycle is so sensitive to lean running, I'm gonna install Bing 54's. The jetting needs to be larger than the 582, but I'm not sure how much to start with. Estimated HP is 80 hp.

    Any advice appreciated.

MANY Thanks for uploading these. They'll be a big help with my new Avid MK-IV project.

The manual parts 1 thru 5 downloaded easily, but the Avid AD's still won't download. Looking forward to the Parts list!

    Thanks again!

That is why i put this in the A model section, they all had the
    front mount built in.

You'll probably want to talk to Brett at Airdale on this one.

If your airframe doesn't have the mount for the nose gear, you'll need to weld in the system to do this...

I've stuffed a Sturdy Birdy before! Same concept as the durabat but with a little larger wing. Leni is right about the donation stuff. This hobby has came so far in technology that I know most of my stuff is outdated except my Heli stuff that I just got into. A lot of fields won't even let you in unless your running a 2.4GHZ radio now and everyone is so Sue happy that it's not wise to fly on your own in an empty field anymore. Between my Dad and I we have a mountain of stuff from the Late 90's. I'm going to convert one plane over to 2.4GHZ and then get rid of the rest of it.

Flying brick is about right, but the gutter stuff is cheap and uh.. durable HAHA! everytime I pick the thing up I'm amazed it can get off the ground at all. I'll find some one who will enjoy it, thanks for the idea!

Before I sold my Rans with a 503 I used VHT ceramic based paint on the exhaust after bead blasting and using the VHT primer as well, it looked nice after about 10-12 hrs, then i sold it. There is a specific burn in procedure and it has to be followed or the paint won't cure right. The stuff sure looked nice, proper prep and burn in are the keys to it lasting, try it out.

Best bet would be to ceramic coat it, exhaust temps will be too high for engine paint and header paint is marginal. Or if you are cheap like alot of us just keep a can of header paint in the hanger and keep re doing it.

    582 Exhaust
On my Skyraider the muffler exits out the side so it is exposed.I wanted to at least paint it but was wondering how hot the muffler itself gets.I know the Y pipe gets really hot but not sure how hot the muffler gets.Would engine paint work or does it need to be header paint.Engine paint says its good for 800 degrees and exhaust paint says its good for 1200.Engine paint looks nice and header paint looks like its already rusted. Thanks Randy

Jeez Jack, that's rough. You've mentioned health issues in the past, we can only hope for those reasons it was the Lord's gracious gift to him for calling on Christmas Day. My condolences and thoughts are with your family.

    Leni & Randy,

I'll not be going out to the lodge with you guys. Wife's dad passed away Christmas day. I'll be staying nearby for a while.
    Thanks for asking though.

I plan on being there unless the weather shuts me down. I was out to Alexander lake today and it was nice flying; I played around for about 2.7 hours and looks like I only burned about 7 or 8 gals. I was plenty cold though; I taped off the bottom of one radiator and still was having trouble keeping the temps up. When I would back off the throttle to 3500 - 3600 cruise for 10 minutes (loving that 2.8GPH) the temps would just keep dropping to 111 degrees I didn't want to dig the duct tape out of the duffle so had to do a high power climb every so often or land and take off to get the temps up to 135 - 145; still cool. It seemed a little faster today running pretty good at 3700 to 3800 rpm showing about 90 on the ASI but 80 to 85 on the GPS; I think under nuetral wind. I have the prop at 15 degrees now but might go back to 16 degrees; it seemed like it was still able to get almost the same T.O. RPM and a little faster in cruise, at least on wheels. Will have to see if it does the same on skis.

Some pretty scenes out toward the Alaska Range but my camera battery went dead as soon as I turned it on. Still have to get some showing the A+ actually out where it was meant to be and prove it is not a hangar queen.

I got a makeshift preheat fabbed up with two butane stoves and alumunum dryer duct. I couldn't find any 50 cal. ammo cans locally so used a heating duct register transition that sits over the stoves. I think it will work OK but not nearly as wind proof as the 50 cal can.

I am really thinking about building a set of longer wings. It would seem that if one used the longer /stiffer spar reinforcement and the wing extension kit plus built or modified the lift struts to center in the longer wing and with the correct wing warp for the longer wing you could get the improved performance plus have a slightly stronger wing. I would love to have a set of wings that were aroung 34' and about 1400 GW.....And I need a new project...

    Bryce,

I used the NGK EVX plugs in my 582 ; kind of spendy but they are very hard to foul and run a long time before you need to change them. With the standard NGK plugs I would get an occasional miss after about 40 to 50 hours and the EVX's never did that; plus they fire in that pool of oil they sit in after the engine sits for a while. I had to pump the primer a few strokes before the gas got to it but I could feel it start pumping he gas; then gave is 5 strokes on a cold motor but had to be careful not to go any more. I think Leni's prcedure of priming while cranking is better to keep from flooding it though.

    Hey Leni,
I noticed that (running dry) on my old primer, i had to replace it this summer, and just swapped it with a new one. I never verified the amount this new primer is dispensing.

Oil is all synthetic j-tec 4 from citgo. Trying to keep Hugo Chavez in power That might be causing a problem. What oil are you using?

I ordered some ngk iridium plugs today. They replaced the ones i mentioned. The guy at NGK said it would help starting in a fouled situation. So we'll try throwing $$$ at the problem

Yesterdays minute plus starting ordeal had the engine spinning @ 600 rpm according to the tach. I remembered what was mentioned about the rpm requirement, so i verified that.

Do you still fly RC's? My last was a great planes Super Stearmen w a FPE 2.4, smoke and even a banner tow set up. An awesome combination until i took off one day with out doing a proper preflight and pulling my head out of my Ass! My longest banner was 30 feet long and 18 inches tall, the plane probably could have handled another 10 feet of banner. I gotta get another Stearmen, it was great!

I was looking at your heat muff set up, you got anymore pics of your set up? I tried something similar by cutting a hole in the firewall behind the muffler, but i didnt do the heat shroud. I definitely couldn't fly in -15, Hell that's ok cause i couldn't even get started in +15

    Thanks for your help. Bryce

Hey Bill, hope you dont mind, but I am taking the liberty of posting up the latest pic! If you do mind, well, I am sure you will get over it by the time you get back to work

I guess you never got the memo that "real men fly bungee gear".. Steve, you wanna help him out on this one

The bird looks great, and we are looking forward to a flight report and your first flight thoughts on it. For those who dont know Mr. Bill, he is an old crop duster, glider tow pilot, and glider geek. It will be interesting to get his opinion on the lil bird after the first few flights.

By cracking the throttle I mean giving it a couple turns in, when it fires it will hit about 2200 RPM. After the last shot of primer I feed it I leave the plunger out if it is real cold out and slowly push it in once it fires to keep it going for those first few seconds.

One other thing, I notice that the primer lines will run dry after a little while of running, so when you first go to prime it it takes a few extra shots to get the first bit of gas to the carbs. I have found that I had to work real hard to flood the engine if I only prime while cranking. If it does not light right off, give her a few more shots.

What oil are you running? Full on synthetic does not stick to the cylinder walls and will really run down and goo up the plugs.

I just run the BR8ES (3961 solid caps) Make sure the plug gap is closer to the .016" instead of .018".

I never rolled or looped mine. I figure I push the envelope far enough with my normal flying One of these days I will get the balls to loop it maybe, but most of the time it is on floats and that really takes away from the vertical performance! I had an RC trainer with an under cambered wing and it HATED to roll. Anytime it was inverted, I dont care how much down elevator you gave it, she would just head for the ground.

How many RPM are you turning when you are cranking? You have to hit that magic minimum of 250 to get a good spark on the 582. I wish someone would come up with an electronic ignition for these so it did not matter what the RPM was it would fire. I have several older RC gas engines that I converted to electronic ignition and WOW did that make a difference in starting (and over all perfromance).
