1.) That was how my Mk-IV manual said to do it.
2.) It facilitates installation of the metal trailing edge and, IMHO, provides a 'shoulder' to catch the metal which helps prevent 'oil-canning' and keep everything straight when shrinking the fabric.

I would add that the construction manual for early Avids with the trailing wire (aka. the 'batwings') and some C models DID instruct to leave the capstrip at least partially intact all the way to the rib tail end. It called for tapering the top capstrip width wise, beginning at the trailing edge wire (full width) to the end of the rib tail (web width) using a straight taper. I believe the change in construction method came with the Mk-IV manual.

But, of course, it's all Experimental so do as you please!

[edit] P.S. Russ , kinda hard to see exactly what you did in that wing pic from www.wingtanks.com, do you have a better pic?

Thats how I do it. I trim along the sides of the tail and leave the cap strip on the tail. Russ. N844RS

Question... Why didn't you or couldn't a person leave the cap strip running to the end of the hangar and just round it off? It would make it a lot stronger to side load which is why mine broke. Well that and a shoulder from the guy who fell off the ladder and into the flaperon.

Ya know, I kinda like your combination seat truss and control stick / torque tube cover setup. I made a soft cover that attached to the truss on my KF-III, but always felt like boot covers for the sticks was a good idea too. The thought of something jamming in the control stick / torque tube mechanisms at an inopportune time is not a warm fuzzy. Your setup nails two birds with one stone, I may try something similar with lexan for quick 'n easy pre-flight inspection.

I got my new ribs in the mail and the cap strip runs right to the end of the hangar for more strength. Anyone have any suggestions for removing the cap strip from the existing rib so i can put in the new splice in?

Contact Airdale, they had the tanks a couple of months ago when I decided to go plastic. I don't know if he is using alcohol resistant resin, but he should be able to build them.

Those are some nice pictures! Makes me feel good to see someone else flying around with a side mounted radiator. I was doing a runup yesterday and decided to open the cabin heat vent and WOW, it pumps the heat out nicely. Should be plenty come winter time up here.

Yessir, that there truss is definitely pranged.

Actually looks a bit worse than I imagined at OSH. As they say, covering can hide a multitude of sins, but I'm pleased to hear she's all patched up and none the worse for wear. Curious how long your safety cables were and if you felt them bottom? Do you think longer cables might have prevented or saved some of the damage? I've read some guys don't even install them, though that would seem not too bright IMHO. Perhaps there is a happy medium?
On a lighter (well, at 220#, maybe not) note, glad my fat butt wasn't in the right seat.

P.S. Actually, I do own an iPhone and a few Apple shares, but I never did warm up to those dang MACs. AppleFanBoi?!... NOT!

Wow, that is wide! With Matco W62 6" wheels and 8.00x6 tires, the track on my Avid+ with Airdale's W.I.B. gear measures 75" wide from tire center to center.

It is still on the bench.. But my significant other is now indisposed of for about the next 13 months so I will have lots of time now to get back on this project instead of trying to keep her out of trouble

First 4 or 5 landings I am surprised I did not get called in for flying drunk in my brothers KF. I dont like them on asphalt. I stick to the dirt or grass as much as possible. I still like my chains a little loose so the tailwheel can unlock a little easier, but I am going into strips at times that I am dragging the wingtips thru the trees on each side and dont have room to turn around unless it unlocks RIGHT NOW. I will try and get some vids in the next day or two of one such spot at a buddies fishing camp.

#1 rule is the feet NEVER stop moving. You have to anticipate and correct before it ever starts to go anywhere.

#2 Get your brakes up to snuff. Spending a few hundred on better pedals and masters is a whole lot cheaper than repairs. Took me alot of hours to justify the cost, but once I did it, I was pretty pissed at myself I had not done it right away!

#3 Burn lots of gas. You dont have a prayer at getting better if your not out practicing. Lots of evenings I will just hit the airport and do 5 or 6 touch n goes (or stop and goes) and call it a night, but I try and fly every day I am home and the weather cooperates.

Dont feel bad Russ, Ive been going through the same thing with my Skyraider.I had to tighten my tail wheel chains up one link and that helped alot on both takeoff and landing. On my landings I started watching the end of the runway instead of what is right in front of me and that also helped.I doubt if any of our forum buddies mastered it right off the bat and if they did more power to them.Remember keep the stick planted in your navel when you land, that was the hardest thing for me.
