    Leading Edge extensions
Didn't want this buried below what was already written.
Any engineering and lift-conscious, CG calculating minds out there?
I see a problem with the tips of the wings being too wide when folded with the 3 inch extended LE, because of the width of the Vertical Stabilizer.
Question: What effect would there possibly be on the CG if the ROOT was extended 3 inches, and a constant taper on the LE to the tip, or at least back to the VS when folded?
Would this be the same as estending the whole LE One and one-half inches, or would it be greater than that, since the main lift is near the root?
All comments welcome - Hope someone has some calculations.

I changed from the 6" hard tired Maul to the 8" pnumatic Maul and it was a huge improvement but still cuts a trench in the sand. Last month at the EAA meeting with the SQ2 presentation they were using the 10" wide double forked Matco TW on these and said they were as good as the baby bushwheel/ Scott TW's and about 1/2 the price and held up well to the extreme abuse they were giving them. I think the 10" is way to big for our planes but the Matco 8" wide TW looks great for around $360 if I remember right. Both Jack and I are thinking about getting them.

Leni, Are you planning to mount it upright or inverted? Might make fitting the expansion chamber in there a little easier.

He's been out of town lately with family-medical issues. Try sending him an email message. (Sales@airdale.com)

I believe he does have the 912 mount in stock, if I remember right. I think there was at least one hanging on the rack...

    Here's one:
    http://www.mez.co.uk/mezporting/exhaust_length.html

There was another one but can't find it now. Wants CC of 1 cylinder, target RPM, and exhaust valve timing.

Found a picture of Paul's HKS on his trike. He sent me more detailed stuff a while back but I think I've lost it all now along with my last brain cell.

    912 engine mount for a model C?
Anyone know where to get an engine mount for a 912? I've left several messages on the phone and email for Brett at Airdale over the past few weeks and haven't heard back from him.

From the video of the eye witness reports, it kind of sounds like it was not making full power.. Sounds and looks like a departure stall senario.

That sent shivers down my spine seeing an Avid balked up like that. Prayers going out for the family. Any ideas without too much speculation what happened?

Thanks - my Flyer Friend verified the 102 today. Got so many things to do to finish fuselage, but did a little research and believe the cheapest, easiest way to extend LE would be with Aluminum. All of this is just thinking for the future.
So sorry to hear an Avid crashed and we lost a Flyer.

Update on this thread after a long time - I used 1 1/4"DS diameter aluminum tube for leading edge, mounted on 4" plywood rib extensions and covered them with 1mm Finnish plywood about 12" wide - also converted undercambered ribs to a modified Riblett profile.  Adding separate 1`5" chord flaps and ailerons with separate controls.   See other Kitfox IV posts and FOXY FLAPPER FOTOS.   EDMO

Thanks for the input guys. I think i will just go with my 532 for now until i can afford what i really want. If I'm not mistaken the exhaust and radiator should be the same for both the 532 and 582 so that will save me a bit when the time comes to.

-Herman- do you remember what ignition it was you put into your 532? this i may be interested in doing.

What specs do you need to plug numbers into your exhaust calculator? I need to come up with a good exhaust system for my 800 conversion I am workng on. Trying to cut twist and fit the stock pipe into the cowling is gonna be a beyatch do to the way the exhaust crosses over the top of the engine. Ahh the joys of experimentals! I figure I am going to loose a little power becasue I have to monkey with the exhaust, but I am starting at 140 HP so I think I can afford to loose a little bit, as long ans she still runs smooth!

I got the MATCO 8" wide for mine but have not had a chance to use it yet. It is WAY wider than the 6" MATCO I was running and it looks like it should do the trick. I went with the single fork 8".

102 inch is legal in Missouri I have hauled plenty of semi-trailers throughout your state and never needed a permit until I was over that, and if it is only an occaissional deal the permits are cheap. 102 is legalin all states, I know california will only allow 40 foot trailers except on designated routes, but very rarely enforced.

Time to update this thread. I started on my plane at 630am on Saturday. I had the engine on the bench by noon. My stator and pulled arrived at 3pm and I went back to the hangar and replaced the stator and cleaned and inspected everything so it was ready to go back in Sunday morn. Started at 7am on Sunday morn and had it fired up and leak checked by noon. It's now running at 14 volts again. Thank goodness!! Pulling the motor alone is fun! Not really.

Pretty good weekend job considering the motor now has new exhaust gaskets, pulse line, fresh plugs, and new gearbox oil and coolant all in a weekend. It was nice to put eyes on everything too. I will post pics of the old stator tomorrow.

    tail wheels
I am looking for a bigger diameter and width tailwheel than the hard rubber Maule tailwheel that came on my Kitfox.
I fly off of soft sand often and my current tailwheel leaves a trench dug in the sand.
Matco offers several choices of tailwheels from $250 to $650 and 3 and 1/2 inches wide to 5 inches wide.
Any experience or suggestions regarding these tailwheels for soft sand?
    Thanks Herman

My 1987 model 1 kitfox also came with a new 532.
I had the points ignition switched out for snowmobile ignition and flew it for 14 years and 450 hours.
The 532 with snowmobile ignition idles at a lower RPM and smoother than my 582 due to the ignition retard feature of the snowmobile ignition.
Merle Williams in arizona has experience with the 583.
The 532 never let me down and I would use yours since you have it.

Well I talked to the DAR today. Very helpful, he has done this before. Besides paperwork, he will require a condition inspection by an A&P or IA, not an LSA Repairman, and only 5 hr. Phase I flight tests.

I'm putting an HKS with a 3.47 gearbox and a 71" Kiev prop in my Kitfox. There are a (very) few planes flying with that combination and reporting OK performance (SkyRanger, Avid, Super Koala). Frankly, I got the engine very cheap otherwise I wouldn't do it.

I'm going with short rear intakes (8" length *including* the carbs) and 30" exhaust pipes based on the experience of a trike flyer in S. Africa and some testing done by a few on the HKS forum. FWIW, those numbers also agree with what came out of calculator for motorcycle intake/exhaust design when I fed in all the numbers from the HKS.

That guy in S. Africa cast me a rough pair of intakes like the ones he had for $50. (I said thank you kindly). Took me a little while to machine them to fit. Won't be night and day difference but when starting with 60hp I'll take every bit available. Probably will lose some lower speed torque (nothing is free) but will trade it for improved climb performance.

So my KF won't be a great climber or go fast (darned I feel bad now) but will be good for cruising around. I found that the 582 did *not* like avgas and car gas isn't available if I'm tooling around very far from home. Plus that engine always needed some tinkering (hate Rotax part prices -> crazy).
