3 blade or 2 blade prop
Right now I am using a 3 blade 66" IVO prop with a 2.58 B gear box. Would I get a little more performance if I took one blade off, or should I have a 72" 2 blade to get more? Right now I am turning 6050 rpm on take off. At cruise I am showing 5750 rpm to get 70 mph.

Here are a couple more pics after the first coat of paint was put on. I will try to keep them coming as I remember to do so. the last one is a general shot of the whole front area the tube across the back holds the aluminum guard and the small tube pointing up with the square plate supports the guard in the middle, the front hooks to the bungie truss, sorry I forgot to take pics of the aluminum guard I will try to remember for the next post.

    Q-

A- Yes, i thought it all through and how I wanted to do it where I could remove it but at midnight tired, low blood sugar, and Ta Da now i don't want to change it but oh well I don't think its an area of too much concern i can lube it the way it is just not as easy or well as I could if i could remove it. If I were to do it again I would make it removable and also add a grease fitting to the housing tube for ease of lubricating. hind site is always 20/20 I will just be happy with what I have for now.

I have to be honest now - Never done a WB on an experimental yet - Will have to go back to books to make sure I have it correct when it comes to oil, gas, water, etc - Donno why all liquids should not be part of EW, since engine cant run without them - Differences in CAR and FARs, TCDS, I guess. There are also differences between WB unusable fuel, minimum fuel for WB, flight and Landing gear approvals.
Wonder if Father of American Aviation might straighten all this out someday...........NO? 'Cause its Guvment run?

I'm sure that he does know how to W&B too, It was all in fun. I did forget to mention his calculation with "USABLE" fuel as opposed to unusable fuel. But I don't carry any unusable fuel. Mine flies until the fuel is all gone, then I have to switch tanks.
(I attached the link in case anyone wanted more W&B info)

80 Yr old woman lands plane after husband has heart attack
There is audio of the final minutes of her circling the airport and getting talked into land. Damn.. Nice job of not panicking as you are trying to fly with your husband next to you dying.. WOW. The audio is 45 minutes long, but is worth listening to! I would love to meet this lady, she is one hell of a trooper!

    582 was over heating
Hey guys, here is another stupid pet trick that you can file away for possible future use. When I rebuilt the engine and stuck it back in I started having over heating issues. I put in new thermostat, new coolant recovery bottle checked it all out time and time again, had buddies come look at it etc.. Well she has been sitting at the airport for awhile so yesterday I decided to go out and work on it and see what I could figure out. Here is what it was doing to me. I would fire it up and let it warm up, when the temp would hit 140 I could watch the gauge and see the thermostat open and temps would drop back down as fluid started circulating. The thermostat would cycle about3 times then steady out at 150 to 160. A full power runup and she would drop down to around 140. Perfect! Take off and about 10 minutes into the flight she would start creeping up to around 180. If I didnt get her back on the ground quick she would blow coolant out the overflow bottle. This thing has been pissing me off for a few months now and life has been busy anyway so I didnt fly much this winter.

So, here is the stupid part... Yesterday the sun was shining, temp was around 45 and it was time to get the plane home so I could work on it. I did a quick check under the cowling and sumbitch, there it was, hit me like a ton of shit. When I put the engine back in, my dumb ass put the overflow line to the recovery tank and the bypass line for the water pump on backwards. The waterpump bypass was feeding in on the top side of the radiator cap. WTH? I swapped the lines around and in 2 minutes my overheating problem went away.

Lesson learned here. When doing things that are so routine DO NOT get complacent. I had the book sitting right there next to me when I put the engine in the plane, but I had done this so many times that I didnt need to use the book to double check my work. I can do this with my eyes shut right??? WRONG. Double check you work!!

OK, so now that I feel stupid, I am still happy I have my bird back and I can go tear up some sky as soon as I get my heater hooked back up and install new fuel lines and filters!

Steve was not using that for W&B, just getting a total weight empty. I am pretty certain he knows how to do W&B It was however, a good catch on your guys part to point that out to others who may not know any better!

    Hi herman,
I haven't looked at the circuit for a while, but the idea is that the polyswitch is a short circuit until the current of the stalled motor opens it up. Since the incandescent or LED light is in parallel with the polyswitch, it will not light because all of the current is being bypassed through the polyswitch. Whan the polyswitch does open due to the stopped motor, as long as you hold the switch on, the light will light because now current cannot flow through the polyswitch, to it goes through the light and lights it. However, the current flow through the light is not enough to turn the motor. Once you release the switch, or reverse the direction of the motor, the light extinguishes. If you are using LED's and they don't light you might have the polarity reversed. It doesn't matter how you wire an incandescent light.

Regarding the washers and limits, there should be rubber like washers that compress at the at each limit in addition to whatever spacer washers ar in there. These rubber washers are essential to proper operation and to prevent damage. As the adjustment nut rides up and down the jackshaft, when it reaches a limit at one end or the other, you don't want an abrupt metal on metal stop. The rubber (or compressable plastic) washer absorbs the shock at the end of travel and allows the current flow to ramp up more slowly so the polyswitches (or original breaker) can do their thing before damage occurrs.

    Hope this makes sense.

I sure hope that these are not the numbers you are using for your weight and balance. If they are, you sure need to work on getting the plane to fly level. LOL The tail needs to be raised to the level-flight attitude. This might help, http://members.eaa.org/home/homebuilders/building/weight/4Weight%20&%20Balance_%20%20Weighing%20and%20Measuring%20Your%20Safety.html

    Chris or Randy
I flew for the first time with limit washers and the poly switches this afternoon and the results were great.
I tried 2 different types of incandescent bulbs from radio shack and wired them in parallel with the poly switched as the ChrisB diagram shows with no results at all as indicator lights as
the lights never lit up let alone blinked when the poly switch felt the strain of the limit switches.
I tested the lights with 12 volts and they lit up so I know they work.
I then hooked up one side of a light to 12 volts and the other side to a polyswitch and the light would dim momentarily when the poly switches sensed the limit washers.
I would appreciate help with my errors or misunderstanding of how to do the indicator lights.
    Thanks Herman

My type A personality requires limits so I installed the limit washers and can see how Leni says the metal washers can damage the lead screw threads. I will look into nylon washers once I figure out the spacing needed.
With the limit washers in place the poly switches are doing their job and I have yet to re-set the Ivo breaker.
I have a hard time getting over how cool a 62 cent product can be.
Chris,I have not yet installed the indicator lights but am curious how they work since they are wired parallel to the poly switches.
Seems like while the pitch switch is activated the lights would always be lit even when the poly switch opens.
Or does the light change in intensity due to current change and that is the indicator?
Also I like your over squared analogy.
When flying a constant speed prop Lycoming the manifold pressure and tach are used to prevent over squaring.
Is preventing over squaring with a 582 a total seat of the pants feeling or is there an analytical way to guage that.
    Thanks Herman

Anazing! No rocks and no badger or gopher holes to swallow up a tire and tear off the landing gear.As a farmer that has to work as well as land around that crap,I am truly inpressed. And of course the flying is excellent as well. What is the elevation in that area?

Ended up trading the Searey + cash for a 180 HP Aeronca Sedan. Last time I was home I strapped the family in and headed out to the cabin, something that's hard to do with a two-seater.

I only flew the Searey a few times. It was fun, but did not really match up with what I wanted to do.

What's the latest on your engine?
