DUH - Now where did I put those heat guns?
    Thanks,

Think it might be easier and cheaper to just replace the lower half with Lexan. You could add an angle inside and a strip outside of the edges where they meet if necessary. Later on, if you replace, you could do half, or go one piece.

One of my books says to use 8-32 machine screws with rubber under steel washers or nylon washers. Make holes at least 1/16th oversize and back off screws one turn after tightening to just touch washer.
Books show an aluminum angle riveted to crosstubes and both pieces bolted to it, with a flat or slightly bent aluminum strip on top. The rear is about the same, except you do not bolt your turtledeck.
Whatever you can dream up will probably work.

Second the motion on Decal, or bumper snicker.
On third thought - Just a Decal - hard to find a place for a bumper snicker on the birds !

    Up late, too, Ed?

I've heard of good results with a heat gun to loosen Hysol.

    GETTING UNGLUED
Does anyone know a chemical or other way of getting something unglued with the Hysol 9460?
I have used a torch, but want to save the wood fairing strips on struts when I change struts to bigger tubes.

Cant locate color code sheet for Lexan - Cadillac # is 9600, I think. Clear, Solar gray, Light Bronze - .080 to .500 thick.
NOW, I have stumbled on something in Lexan called "MAKROLON" which is referred to as "complies with FAR.......?
Got to check on this when I get time.
    ED in MO

Correction: 9034 is the one listed as having the tints. There are several varieties of GE Polycarbonate - One is listed as "bendable"?
Another is more of this , another is more of that? Enough to make you wish you hadnt started looking !
Makrolon is the same types of Polycarb as produced by BAYER. The FAR has to do with flamability, wouldnt worry about any of these.
Need more info - try looking it up....I'm done.

    Robert,
You can read, download, pdf print, AC-20-27G on the FAA site. Think this is the latest for op. lims. and home-built rules.

In case anyone was wondering here is a bit more info on different color lexan
the info can be found here- http://www.eplastics.com/Plastic/Plexiglass_Acrylic_Sheet_Bronze_Grey_Smoked_Gray_Colored

Thickness tolerances are plus/minus 10% on acrylic sheet. Thickness can vary throughout the sheet. Normally we see plus/minus 5% or less differences. Use this list as a guide converting fractions to what is actually produced industry-wide.

Best to rivet and glue the mounts before you finish. Grimes lights (get the streamlined ones), or newer lights will fit it.
Believe I just saw some grimes lights on airplane parts on Ebay for $50.
Joe Norris at the EAA sent me a copy of the newest operating limitations which they are recommending everyone to use, and AC20-27G - I dont have them available right now, but that is what it says. I believe it is on the sign-off sheet for Phase 1 or 2 also.
They are also recommending anyone to copy those limitations and change to them because it lets you do modifications or major repairs without a new FAA airworthiness inspection, if I understand it right.
BUT - I think to change your old limitations to the new ones, you will have to go to your FSDO and maybe get a new inspection.
If you are fresh building - get a copy of these and do it now before your inspection.

I will be using the Stewarts system, I was thinking of masking off the front of the spars and the trailing edge where the glue will be just like I did the rib cap strips, then at least I can put primer on everything else to add just a bit of corrosion protection and the other areas will be covered with glue when I cover anyway so I figure that should protect it good enough.

I picked up a used set for mine off ebay for 50 bucks. I had to put new bulbs in them and I think they were around 20 bucks each. I had to make some mounts for mine in the wing tips so you will want to do that before they are covered. I will get some shots of the mounts I glassed in for mine put up here this evening. lots of filling and sanding with kitty hair filler to get them frenched in nice and smooth but they looked good when done.

Thanks Ed, I have actually looked for used lights but never thought of getting some cheap ones and replacing the bulbs with LED's to make them work for me. I will have to look into this. I don't have any mounts on my wing tips yet but I don't think it would take too much to add them just need to know which lights to go with. Do you happen to know where it says in the FAR's that I can add them later?

  17. EDMO added a post in a topic NAV lights?

I couldnt tell from your photos if you have the mount for the lights on your wingtips - if not, you should add it now.
Believe the operating instructions you will have will say, "night flight when properly equipped", or something like that, so you can add the lights and any other needed instruments later on to make it legal with only a logbook entry, IMO.
Look on ebay for used wingtip lights - believe I just saw a set there. You can replace the old bulbs with the new LED bulbs which dont take much juice.
Dont forget to add a mount for a taillight on your rudder if you are not going to pay a high price for the tip lights with the taillights on them. And, figure out your strobes, which are manditory, as is artificial horizon, etc.

Just thought I'd add to this thread as I need to replace the tank seals for my C model Avid. This kit is #846 and the tank seals are 2" OD x 1 3/16" ID and .050 thick. Not sure if the other model tanks were the same but Avid used these in late 1990.

Answering this before looking at your photos - dont know what tubes you are referring to, but not a good idea to leave off something the designer felt was needed, imo,.
PRIMING the spars may not be good, depending on the glue and system you are going to use. The weight is neglible.
If you are using Stewarts, I would leave the spars bare - their glue will bond better. Others glues will eat up primer, and will only be safe on epoxy.
I used KILZ on ribs, and spray polyurethene 2 coats - masked any area where glue or fabric will attach to wood. If you finish your rib capstrips, be sure to sand them before gluing.
    Congrats on progress.

    NAV lights?
if I don't install nav lights before my inspection can I still add them later and be approved for night VFR flight or do I have to have everything approved now? I'm wanting to be approved for night flight but would like to save the money now and just get into the air so I was hoping I could just run the wiring and install inspection rings so I could do the actual install at a later date. If and when I do purchase them does anyone know of a good unit that won't break the bank but will still work with our low output engines thanks

wow so many reply's so fast I love this place!!
I'm still leaning towards using one coat of sealer and two coats of polyurethane I plan to keep it inside an enclosed trailer out of the weather when not in use and I live in a pretty dry climate so this should serve me well I believe. Rivets and glue it is on the trailing edge and also the tube reinforcements guess all I need now is more time and parts.

Also no I did not put alodine on the spars the color is just the lighting on my porch, I was planing to just spray some primer on them after everything is complete just before fabric. is this a good idea or is there something else that I should use?

    Thanks Robert

Bandit could you please post up some pics and info how you transitioned the windshield and sky light together, I'm wanting to use clear for the front and smoke gray on top so I will need to do two piece as well.

also I'm thinking of attaching it all with small machine screws and nylock nuts so I can adjust the amount of pressure it has anyone else done it this way if so what size of screws and how long did you use

    Thanks Robert

I used Hysol to bond the TE stock to the rib tails....ailerons and flaps in my case.
There is a Klingspor wood shop near me that stocks T-88 and all of the System Three adhesive line...up to gallon sizes. The general purpose resin is good to 165 deg. F. for service limits...so that is what I am going with to moisture proof the ribs. The guy that owns System Three is a home builder/pilot himself from what I have been told.
Nice work.....did you alodine your spar tubes? They have that golden tinge to them.

Will this affect the strength of the glue bond to the capstrip? I think I saw in the manual not to put any paint or varnish on the capstrips do to the glue not being able to soak into the wood.

    Robert,
Polyurethane is a good flexible coating, not as tough as epoxy, but flexible, which is what you want because of expansion contraction etc. That is why they use it in auto finishes, etc. Bryce
