You can use a wire feed, that is what the factory uses.Tig would be the best but would take forever to weld a fuse together.I had some scrap chrome moly tubing that I practiced on and did ok when I needed to weld something on my plane.Just short on and off burst with the trigger gave me the best results.I used a little Lincoln 110 with Stargon gas and .025 wire.Practice makes perfect.Randy

Hey Bandit,
The airframe was mig welded together. Yes you can use a wire feed. I would recommend an argon shielded weld over a flux cored wire because it makes a cleaner weld. Bryce

Wire feed weldingCan I weld mounting tabs on my airframe with a wire feed welder or do any other welding with it? It looks like they used wire feed on some parts because you can see parts of the wire left on the weld.

Thanks Randy, that is GREAT news. I am hoping for a retrival effort October 8th or some time that week. I am going up to the lodge to tie the knot on the 4th (heading to the lodge on the 4th, the knot tying will be the 6th). After that I will see what it will take to get in there and get her fixed n out of there!
I too notice that there is a big difference in the flight attitude between 80 and 90-100 at 80 I am running full up trim, at 90-95 I am at full down trim and pushing just a hair on the stick. I am thinking about building larger balanced tail feathers like the squared off cub tails. I think it will help with the float flying.
On another note, do you know anything about the HH for sale on craigslist? Seems like a darn good price for all that is included on a brand new plane that has not yet been completed.

Leni,
I found your plane tonight and everything still looks good. It is tucked into a little cove on the south side of thelake like it is waiting for you to get back from moose hunting. It was pretty late when I got there so I didn't notice the runway and trail you found.
It was getting pretty dark by 9:00 when I got back to Wolf Lake; kind of glad they installed the runway lights now and glad I got the IVO back on. (I had to send the motor back and get a new one since it quit again.) Cruising at 95 is so nice when it is getting dark. I notice that the plane flies at a much more tail high/nose down attitude when trimmed out at 90 to 95; kind of like it gets up on step. A big difference when I had the Warp Drive back on it for a while with the 80 mph cruise; flying around with a 20 mph headwind you realize how big a difference it is.
Let me know when you plan to do the retrieval and if I can help.
Randy

I swear that there is some truth to that. A friend's Cessna 150 sat thru a hailstorm and was very evenly dimpled across the entire plane. That was probably the reason he got it cheap. It flew faster and landed slower than any other 150 i'd flown and except for resembling a golf ball it was a great plane.

BUT, they fly so much faster after you fly thru a hail storm! Like golf balls are dimpled....

The way these wings flex I wouldn't want anything to do with metalized surfaces.

I had the wings on my Ercoupe metalized - hundreds of rivets and 35 pounds later they were nice.
But remember, the Ercoupe had metal ribs - you would need to put aluminum strips under each side of ribcaps for the rivets.
Ultra-light fiberglas - like in model building - has been tried too.
This builder MIGHT be a member of EAA 42 - I have friends in that chapter who have hangers at Birchwood.

Travis,
Just curious - what size are the hoses or inlets for the rads?

metalized wingsI read on here someone said something about metalized wings. Found this one on craigslist and it says it has metalized wings. I might get ahold of him to see what he actually did or how he did it.

Looks like a very nice day for flying! I ahve not had much luck using any of the bullet or helmet cams in the cockpit. The way they capture the image the prop really does some weird stuff. Your is not too bad though! You may try a ND 4 or ND 6 filter on the lens to see if that will help you. It makes a HUGE difference on my gopro. You can just get the filter paper (plastic sheet) and cut out little circles to go over the lens.
Nice flying!

EDMO added a post in a topic where to get the lexan turtledeck?
Travis, You need to connect with Randy SuberAvid about the finishing of the butt ribs, since he raised his.
Some use fabric to seal the rear spar opening, but since it swings, I have been thinking of some kind of flat rubber to seal that area, maybe along with fabric or sheet metal?

As all of you have implied good flying days are few and far between. Where I live the delta breeze blows 15-20 all day every day. After getting the Avid flying and watching it in the back of the hangar I sold it.

SuberAvid added a post in a topic Battery for ea81
I use the PC680 in mine and it starts it just great in the summer but I have had issues in the -20 winter that I think I finally figured out is the master solonoid rather than the battery. The solonoid does not like to connect oin the cold temps. I don't know if there is an internal lube or if it freezes but it will not trip. It has even done this to me when I land and shut it down just for a short time. I have been carrying a jumper battery with me and when I resart it with the jumper battery the voltage fluctuates pretty wildly for some time and then it will just settles and holds a steady voltage. I am sure that is when the solonoid finally trips and makes the connection to the battery. I will either have to try a different solonoid or will just insert an air activated MyCoal heat pak in on the solonoid when I fly in the winter. I still will pack the jumper battery with me in the winter until I am sure.

They look like a lot of fun, but I've got to admit to likeing the enclosed cockpit for much of my flying. A few years ago I was heading out to fish up the Yentna River in my MK IV and it was kind of rainy and windy with low clouds; I was considering turning back when I passed a guy flying a powered kite. Man did I feel like a wymp. I would love it on a nice warm day though; like riding my motorcycle on a nice desert evening when I lived in Utah; doing that in the air woud be even better.

2 stroke engine mounts and cheek radiatorsI went with a 912 for my plane so I've got a standard 2 stroke mount for an avid and a Dyna smooth mount that will include the cheek radiators.
$150 for the standard mount not pictured. $600 for the black Dyna smooth mount including the cheek radiators.
Both of the mounts are used and can use a coat of paint but are in good shape.
