I didnt go to look at your reference yet - my puter is about as fast as a snail today - But, Yes, I want to make mine 7/8 with .058 or .065 wall connected to a short stub of the old 3/4 fitting at the fuselage, and insert another short tube inside of the old tube at fuselage fitting before welding the new ones on, and use rod ends at wing connects - best rod end I can find in Spruce is 3/8 threads and 5/16 hole ($17 each) - that should work - believe this is BIGGER than what was tested by Kitfox for about a 15G proof test, except they kept the 1/4 inch bolt, which bent. The rod end broke at 15G.
I can re-use my wood fairing strips on the new struts with a little sanding and epoxy.
The strut fitting at wing is too wide for rod end - so adding washers as spacers should work with the 5/16 bolt.
Dont really think the cross piece is necessary unless some engineering type person tells me why.
    Thanks,
    ED
get the Aurora rod end equivalent to the Heim - Lots cheaper.

Ed, I would say they its more like the cross bar on an "A" rather than an "H" but hey whos to judge. Anyways i've had the same thought as i currently have the small 3/4" lift struts and was thinking of going with two separate ones and add the heim rod ends on both sides rather than just one. I saw these http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kitfox-Aircraft-Strut-Set-/121021750195?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&nma=true&si=KnKIwhytIX9zuYZ%2BGt2Ltxemi5E%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc on ebay a while back and think something like this may be nice. any thoughts?

Sorry for not being clear - the early struts had a cross tube connecting the two strut tubes at the wing end of the struts - like the center bar in an "H". Some later model struts I saw were just two seperate tubes without this connecting tube - so, is it really needed, and why?
I'm not talking about the jury struts.
The Pipers have two independent struts, and no connecting tube.

There are some stories I dont tell on here... they are only for sitting around the campfire when no cameras are rolling

My title was bestowed on me on the Matronics list by Mr. Jetpilot during a heated battle of the wits (he lost) and it led to us both being banned for a bit of time.. I about drove the poor mods crazy over there cause it only takes a couple minutes to make a new email and get back on through a proxy server and drive them crazy trying to figure out who I really was today I guess I had way too much time on my hands at work

Nice to see some movement on this one again! Looks like we are going to be spending some time on Akflyerbobs Mod III when I get back to try and get that one ready for the air so he can send it down river and move the Mod IV back in the garage and get it done... Maybe after that I can get him fired up on the Catalina again... Hint hint Mr. Bob, the Catalina needs to fly this summer

170B is a sweet bird. A buddy had one with 180 HP and CS prop and that bird was a real sweetheart to fly! Cruised fast and would JUMP off the ground and climb like I would have never believed!! Congrats on the TD endorsement. 90% of my primary training was TD in the PA-12, 180 or scout that the local flying club had and I hated every flight after that in a 152 or 172 cause it made me feel lazy and not "in control" cause the damn thing stays straight on it own

The 108 flys very solid too, but I cant get over the tail on those darn things To me they are like a Zenith 701 or the likes.. those planes dont fly, they are so damn ugly the earth repels them!

congrats Robert - welcome to the TD club. I had mine about 100 years ago, along with my Motorcycle endorsment, but lost logbook in house fire in 1976 and never needed to get the TD or MC back again.

P.S. If you need to get the Stinson off quickly, just get some speed up and grab the handle and pull flaps and it will jump off.

    WING STRUTS
I have to modify my wing struts to make them heavier and longer: I think I have seen later model struts without the connecting tube at the wing end - Am I right on this, and is this connecting tube on the earlier models really necessary?

    Tail Wheel endorsement
So I went out last week and got my tailwheel endorsement in a 1955 Cessna 170B. It was great! what a very docile aircraft to fly. we spent two days 4.6 hrs TT and made landings at four airports in winds up to 15 KTS. it was a great time. Now if the weather would cooperate I have a flight up north to coeur d'Alene planed to pick up a Stinson 108-3 for a friend who just bought it and bring it back down here to southern Idaho. I will put up some pics of the flight once we get back. It will be the furthest north I've flown yet over some amazing country I'm looking forward to it.

  15. EDMO added a post in a topic LSA /LSP - How do they know?

From what I understand in the regs - The "manufacturer / builder" puts the gross weight on his project: Guess you could build a flying boxcar and list it as 1320 LSA if you have the weight and balance to prove that your MTOW is 1320 or less.
For mine - The two outside tanks with 24 gallons of gas can only be filled for solo flight, and will be tagged that way - The W/B sheets will have to be seperate for both solo and dual flights.

p.S. The "Nay-sayers" are the reason I am on this site and enjoy the company - we dont all march to the same music, but we are agreeably tolerant of different tunes. I have learned a lot from the "chain-saw drivers" !
:lol:/>/>/>/>/>/> (tired of seeing that? - well, thats the only one I can remember) :lol:/>/>/>/>/>/>
edit: The EAA 1x4 tag is probably all you need to be legal - but seems like in my poor memory, that there was at one time, a DOD, or DOT? tag, which required a lot more info, or was it DEA? I dont worry about it, because I dont cross borders (yet) and dont haul dope, except for my prescriptions.

Not sure what is up with the emoticons. I will work on it tonight or tomorrow.

There is NO need or requirement to put the "gross" weight on the data tag. As Doug pointed out, ELSA has a max take off weight of 1320# on wheels. Yes, there are other requirements to be met but experimentals DO NOT have a max gross weight recorded anyplace other than what you choose to put on the weight and balance.

Yes, we do have a member on this site who has his 1550 kitfox registered as an LSA. This member is an IA and got it approved through his FSDO. It can be done and it is one of the major reasons this site came into being. The "discussions" of this subject on another site got a few of us banned because the nay sayers and yes men were not smart enough to read the actual regs and the intent of them, versus what the goober at EAA thought would be what they meant. It is spelled out in black and white in the regs what constitutes a light sport aircraft.

The data tag under the H.S. on my KF4-1200 is one of those 2-line abbreviated versions. It has Model and S/N# if I recall correctly. I do have the standard large data plate fastened to the firewall, viewable (readable?) from outside the cockpit. I like being a little different.

The Data tag I was refering to is the FAA aircraft name plate. Part # B4007 in the Wag-Aero catolog. It measures 3" X 4 1/4". Top of plate says Experimental Amateur Built Aircraft. Below that are where you list: Model, next line: Serial No Empty Wt, next line: Date of Mfg, Gross Wt next line Engine Hp. Then it says Built By then next line Name, next line Address, next line City and State. That plate comes with the kit I believe, and if not you can buy it for $5.00 Take care, Jim Chuk

    INTRODUCTION - ED in Missouri
    JOEY,
I know you had good intentions on starting this - but IMO, we dont want to scroll down 600 introductions to find one flyer - Therefore, I think each of us should make our own post.

I dont have a lot to confess to - my current wife thinks I am a Sweetheart, and I will try to fake it on here! The X's know I am just an old Curmudgeon - Look it up!
I have to confess to being a prolific writer (Read that as BS'r), and have published several articles in machinists books.
71 years old - born and raised from Louisiana to Michigan, with Missouri Bootheel as the middle ground, and Home. Grew up in Cropduster outfit, and drove Stearmans when about 10 years old. Model airplane builder until old enough to solo "real planes". Flew L-19 Birddog, L-20 Beaver, and a little bit H-13 Bell 47, in Army, 1960's in Germany.
Flew search and rescue with USAF/CAP for 11 years. Retired again as supervisor with Coast Guard.
Commercial Pilot training on GI bill, while doing Toolmaker Apprenticeship at Chrysler. Early retirement at age 50 and went to Alaska and got AMT / A&P at University of Alaska, Anchorage. Owned about a dozen planes and flew several more - NEVER WRECKED OR BENT ONE THO! Not even my Ercoupe, which someone had rigged wrong.
Went down the experimental road and studied Aircraft design for the last 16 years. Got my first Kitfox in a box of wreckage in 1995 - Started building a copy then, and abandaned it when I bought a KF2, and a Maule M4C -
Now trying to finish another scratchbuilt clone with lots of mods like ailerons and flaps instead of flaperons that I started 16 years ago, and had it almost finished until it fell off of the top of my trailer when moving back to Missouri in 2007. No photos for now, but hopefully will post some in next year or so. Waiting for fuselage to come back from paint shop while I extend leading edges on wings. Using Reductions EA-81 and Warp Drive hub and planning on Whirwind Razerblades for the fan. Got almost enough spare parts for someone to build a Kitfox I, clone.
Really enjoy a site where you can be honest and speak your mind without being banned as a nonconformist.
Enjoy talking to all of you about anything, and have learned a lot from you all.
How's that for some BS Leni?
    GOOD FLYING, ED IN MO
