I put in the rings but never cut them out. My thoughts were... what could fail that I need to get in there and fix. The strut attach points, the drag link attach points, the area behind the pitot tube etc. If there was a mechanical attachment in the wing, I put a ring over the area in case of need in the future. All that being said, there is no requirement I know of to have a single one in the wing but it will make future possible repairs easier, cleaner and quicker to do.

when trying to decide where to put and how many inspection rings I wanted on my wings one thing I used to determine was that its easier to wish you hadn't "wasted time/resources" installing them than to wish you had installed them later. I started with the few I knew I wanted ie. wing tip for light access, then when it was all done I had one in every bay staggered from front to back. too much... probably, but if I ever need one there is probably one that will work, and if not I probably made a big oops anyways and will not be worrying about inspection rings. for what they cost and weight its not going to decrease performance any and I had all of them installed in just a couple hours. just my .02 cents

    -Robert-

Edit: if you center them with the holes in the rib web you can reach across to the adjacent bays from each hole.

    ^This.

I've resolved to add an ePump and fuel flow when the weather warms, plus a filter with a Jim Chuk style filter bypass. Will need to ditch my minimalistic 'center console' and re-route my fuel line to make it all work.

I don't know how or if this would work on dial up but using firefox there is a addon that allows you to download youtube and vimeo videos to your computer. Then you can watch them at your time. I have found it does download faster than watching and I think you have the option of downloading lower quality video. Let me know if that works. Great video and nice country you fly over. Odd thing is there is no white cover on the ground :)/> Nice touch and fly on the hillside.

Sorry, Doug. That makes another tyrannically governed state that I will never live in or visit. We have room for you and your family here in a "Free" state.

This law does nothing but empower criminals.

    TOO LATE FOR ME.

Governor Cuomo Signs Groundbreaking Legislation That Will Give New York State the Toughest Protections Against Gun Violence in the Nation
    Printer-friendly version
    Albany, NY (January 15, 2013)

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today signed into law the NY SAFE Act (Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act) that will give New York State the toughest gun laws in the nation. The legislation includes provisions to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons and potentially dangerous mental health patients, and ban high capacity magazines and assault weapons.

Under the legislation, New York will be the first state in the nation to ban any magazine that can hold more than seven rounds and run instant background checks on all ammunition purchases at the time of sale. The legislation will allow authorities to track ammunition purchases in real time to alert law enforcement to high volume buys, and will include a statewide standard requiring recertification of pistol permits every five years. The legislation also closes a private sale loophole to ensure all gun purchases are subject to a background check, and toughens criminal penalties on those who use illegal guns.

"The new law will limit gun violence through common sense, reasonable reforms that include addressing the risks posed by mentally ill people who have access to guns and banning high capacity magazines and lethal assault weapons," Governor Cuomo said. "This legislation is not about hunters, sportsmen, or legal owners who use their guns appropriately. It is about reducing gun violence and making New York a safer place to live. I thank leadership of both the Assembly and Senate for their action on this important legislation."

Key provisions of the NY SAFE Act include:

Mental Health Alert: Under the legislation, mental health professionals will be required to report to local mental health officials when there is reason to believe a patient is likely to engage in conduct that will cause serious harm to themselves or others. This information will then be crosschecked against the new comprehensive, and regularly updated, gun registration database. If the patient possesses a gun, the license will be suspended and law enforcement will be authorized to remove the person's firearm.

Tougher assault weapons ban: The legislation outlines a stricter definition of assault weapons, and implements an immediate ban of defined assault weapons. Under the stricter definitions, semi-automatic pistols and rifles with detachable magazines and one military style feature will be considered assault weapons. Semi-automatic shotguns with one military style feature will also be considered assault weapons. Assault weapons possessed before the effective date must be registered within a year and recertified every five years. Owners of grandfathered assault weapons may only sell out of state or through an in state federal firearms licensee. Under the legislation, the Bushmaster used in the Newtown, Connecticut shooting will be illegal.

Stronger regulations on ammunition: Under the legislation, New York will have the strongest ban on high capacity magazines in the country, with a limit on capacity of seven rounds, down from the current limit of ten. The legislation includes a ban on possession of pre-1994 high capacity magazines, and will require owners to sell the banned magazines out of state within one year. Existing ten round magazines can be grandfathered in, but may only be loaded with 7 rounds.

To track high-volume ammunition purchasers, the legislation will make New York the first state in the nation to track ammo purchases in real time. All dealers in ammunition must be registered with the State Police, and each sale will require both a state background check and transmission of a record of the sale to State Police, so as to enable alerts of high volume purchases. Ammunition records will be purged within a year of submission. Dealers must report any loss of inventory. The legislation will also include a ban on direct internet sales of ammunition. Ammunition ordered over the internet must be delivered in a face-to-face transaction with a firearms dealer and the purchaser will be subject to the state background check. The Aurora shooter reportedly amassed 6000 rounds through direct online purchases.

Statewide recertification of handguns and assault weapons: The legislation will require individuals who have a handgun license or have registered an assault weapon in New York State to recertify every five years through their county of residence. With this more accurate information, the state will establish an electronic gun permit database that may be run against other databases containing the names of people who will be disqualified from possessing firearms, including those with criminal convictions, involuntary commitments, and those subject to orders of protection, as well as death records.

Universal Background Checks – closing the private sales loophole: The legislation will require all gun transfers between private parties, except immediate family, to be conducted through a federal firearms licensee, subject to a subject to a federal National Instant Criminal Background Check.

Webster Provision: Under the legislation, murder of a first responder who is engaged in his or her duties will become a Class A-1 felony, with a mandatory penalty of life in prison without parole. This provision was created to honor the memory of Lt. Mike Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka who were victims of a fatal shooting in Webster, New York, on December 24, 2012.

Extending and Strengthening Kendra’s Law: Kendra’s law will be extended for two years – through 2017 – and the period of mandatory outpatient treatment will be extended from 6 months to one year. In addition a review will be required before a mentally ill inmate is released.

Protecting Families: When a judge issues an order of protection and finds a substantial risk that the individual subjected to the order will use a gun against the person protected by the order, the judge is required to the surrender of the weapon.

Safe Storage: To better ensure that guns are kept inaccessible to those who are barred from possessing them, the legislation requires safe storage of firearms in households where individuals live who have been convicted of a crime, involuntarily committed, or are subject to an order of protection. Existing state law already requires that all guns sold at retail in the state be sold with a gun lock.

Keeps Guns Out of Schools: Under the legislation, the penalty for possession of a firearm on school grounds or a school bus will be increased from a misdemeanor to a Class E Felony. The state's SAVE Act (Safe Schools Against Violence in Education) requires school districts to develop school safety plans including evacuation, dismissal, community response, and alerting family, law enforcement and other schools in the area in the event of a violent incident or other emergency. The legislation will allow school districts to submit their school safety plans to a newly created New York State School Safety Improvement Team, consisting of representatives from state agencies with relevant expertise (e.g. DHSES, State Police, DCJS), which will review plans and assist localities in developing plans. Some designated safety system improvements will be eligible for enhanced re-imbursement under the state’s School Building Aid formula. New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers and Syracuse will be exempted.

Tougher penalties for illegal gun use: The legislation establishes tougher penalties for those who use illegal guns as well as measures to help combat gang violence. Tougher penalties under the legislation include:

Possession of an unloaded gun will be raised from a misdemeanor to a Class E felony.Recklessly injuring a child by a firearm will become a Class D felony. The purchase of a gun for someone the buyer knows to be disqualified because of a conviction of a crime, an involuntary commitment or other disqualifier, will be raised to a Class D felony from a misdemeanor. This also raised to a class D felony the sale or transfer of a firearm to an individual known to be prohibited from possessing a gun.Tougher penalties to permit more effective gang prosecutions, allowing a prosecutor to ask for 25 to life (previously was just 15 years) for an entire group when a gang is involved in murder.Using or carrying a firearm during drug trafficking or a violent felony will include a 5 year mandatory minimum sentence if the gun is loaded and a 3½ year mandatory minimum if unloaded. (The Court could impose a lower sentence in drug trafficking cases depending on mitigating factors).Sharing a gun with an individual who is not authorized to possess a gun and commits a crime will constitute criminal facilitation.

Cessnas don't have a header tank that can be mounted below the engine like a Kitfox or Avid. They also don't rely on pitot pressure to push fuel.

If you decide to add inline filters that is definitely reason to have a pump.

Just having you as an inside connection is a big help; thanks. I really hope Brett hangs in there gets his health back on line. I sure wish he would accept your help as well, It would likely take a real load off of him just to have help tracking and organizing his orders; as well and having help with ordering materials, checking off the parts list, packaging and shipping... He could spend his time fabricating. I hope that he will take you up on the help for all of our sakes. I have a wing extension kit ordered as well.

On the axles that I got it was one axle rod with external threads on both ends. You had to cut it in half and to length, and thread the inside of the cut axles on both ends to axcept the 3/8" dia. ski bolts. The inside of the axle has to be flush with the axle tube on the inside of the landing gear and ski mounts inside of the landing gear bolted to the inside face of the axle. The length of the axle is determined by the distance between the ski support tower attach points since the outer ski mount is bolted through to the outer face of the axle. The 3/8 bolts into the center of the axles are the pivot trunions for the skis. Since these have to be able to pivot you cannot tighten these bolts too tight and you will need to safety them to secure them from backing out. Since they have to go at least 3/4" or so into the axle to get good strength, I drilled two holes for the axle nut cotter pin to use depending on which wheels I was running summer or winter (for the wheel skis you have to run the stock Avid/Matco wheels). The cotter pin hole has to be located little more than the 3/4" from the end of the axle to clear the depth of the ski bolt. The axle retaining bolt through the gear leg also has to be located far enough from the inside face to clear the inside ski bolt.

For my Airworthiness Inspection it was a check that all the required placarding was there on the plane and instruments, that the instruments all worked, the registration was in place and correct (be sure all of your FAA paperwork is completed), the N number was correct, the warning signs were in place, the dataplate was correct, all of the controls worked properly without binding, all of the hinges and pins and bolts were in place and safetied, etc, the the radio and ELT worked (but as said, the ELT is not required under certain circumstances; one of which is staying within a 50 mile radius of your home airport), all the lights and beacon work, the fuel and electrical systems look like they are well laid out, and safe, the engine fired up and ran smoothly, all of the wiring and fuel lines were well secured and protected from wear, the seat belts were solid and adequately secured, sometimes the DAR wants to know if your seats and seat belts were purchased from an aircraft parts supplier (even if they are not specifically made for aircraft). The DAR probably has a feel for how carefully and safely the work was done when he looks at the overall condition of the plane. He cannot see and inspect everything but he will check off the "required to have" items and look at other things for safety of construction (in my experience).

The airplane should have everything in place and ready to fly so get it to that point with nothing left to do as far as you know. I had done quite a few full power runups and taxi tests by the time I had my inspection, but I had been flying an Avid for several hundred hours by then and felt pretty comfortable doing that. Be careful to heed the warnings about doing high speed taxi tests in these plane though! There were about 3 things that the DAR asked me to change, primarily adding some placards, bolt lengths and lock nuts, etc. I was able to do the first test flight that same afternoon.

For those of us to whom it is important to keep our second ammendment rights; there is a great tool on the Ruger website to send a letter to each of your federal and state representatives (all at one time) requesting that they do not pass any additional gun legislation. You can go on the site

    http://www.ruger.com/micros/advocacy/

and check it out. It is very quick and easy. We have to all stick together and be active to fight this misguided anti-gun effort and we have to do it now or we will be looking at confiscation next. This regime has proven that it will do everything it can (as their Fast and Furious efforts prove) to take away our rights. We have to push all of our other representatives to stand up to them. Please do it now and do it once a week.

I pulled the fuel line off my pulse pump with 5 gallons on board to test the gravity feed and fuel shot 3 ft away. Do you have the wing spar header tank? Maybe those provide better feed than the kitfox tanks at the bottom of the fuse? Electric is a good back up I guess. Seems if it was really necessary Cessnas and everything else with a highwing would be running them too??

I know several people who have had pulse pump failures. An electric backup will save you from an engine out in that situation.

My Avid came with an electric fuel pump in addtion to the normal pulse pump. Anyone know why? The fuel system is plumbed like the book, namely a pressure assisted gravity feed. I am redoing things, and am consodering the remaoval of electric pump.... ideas?

    Thanks,

Yes, I understand the need for a spacer to provide force against the bearing, however the book shows a spacer in excess of 11/2" wide. I have enough thread on the axle to do as I what I would consider normal, so I will do so.

    Thanks,

You need the spacer behind the nut to hold pressure on the bearing face, only. The nut won't do this. Also the spacer acts as a washer in the event of bearing failure holding everything together and not allowing rotational force to be put on the nut.

I know nothing about your settup, but as a machinist/A&P, I wonder if threading all the way in and drilling a hole that far in could make a fracture point on the axle when you put weight on the ski outboard of that point?
Just something to think about - they must have had a reason for being "unreasonable"?

I look at the DAR or one of the EAA Technical Advisors as my "Safety Man", who might spot something that I had overlooked that might get me into deep doo-doo once in the air. Anytime you can get a second pair of eyes on your bird, you are better off. He may look for possible future troubles, or for unsuitable fittings, etc., maybe a cable that is going to grind away at my engine mount tube? There have been cases where the builder did not notice that his aileron controls were reversed!
You are better served if the inspector is one who is really familiar with your type of plane, since it is far different than the spam cans with certified engines.

The inspection rings are there for later inspections or repairs if you need them. I will put in more than I think I will need. No need to cut the fabric and plate until used. There are places where a clear Lexan plate might be installed for a frequent means to check something that could be critical and the longivity is questionable.

The ELT is not required in Phase 1 - Only when you can carry a passenger. Single-place planes do not require them, although I would want one from the time of first flight - it could save your life.

I would ask the DAR. One may be a real stickler on things, and another one may say to himself: You have 40 hrs. of phase 1 time before you risk anyone else. If you're willing to risk your own life, who am I to argue. No doubt, those are the extremes, especially the last one, I'm sure they have guidelines they follow, but I recently heard of a DAR that wouldn't do the inspection because the plane didn't have an ELT in it. I thought that was kind of bougus as there are a number of exemptions to the requirement for an ELT and I think the phase 1 test period would fit into one of those exemptions. It would be good to have a working relationship with the DAR well before the plane is ready for inspection. Take care, Jim Chuk
