Hey! I got in with out the security warning BS tonight.

I did their request for review form yesterday or Saturday. Told them the only "badware" on this site is their jump through hoops crap that pops up when I try to access this site and to leave us alone. Think that took care of it?

What kind of approach, over the fence and touchdown speeds are you experiencing? What is your empty weight?

Thanks Chris; I think your going to like yours. You might have to keep both your Avid+ and Magnum when you get them both flying again! You can always have one on wheels and one on floats....

I learned about ice fishing when I was displaced to Michigan to go to high school. I was driving for an older man to take him places. We went from Flint up to his cabin at West Branch, passing the edge of the big lake and looking at all the cars and little shacks and people fishing on the ice. When we got to the lodge, the old man said, "come on and I will teach you how to ice fish."
I didnt like the sound of it, but I was on his payroll, so I complied.
We went from the cabin and drilled 5 holes in the ice, and then he set up a little tripod with baited hook and line and a little red flag on a pivot at each hole.
We then went back to the cabin, sat in front of the fireplace, drinking whiskey, and looking out the picture window for a little red flag to go up.
For a Southern boy, that is the only way to go ice fishing!

Looks like a fun day Joey, you can't beat those clear crisp winter days on the snow! T.O. and landing at 7000' is something that I have never done so that would be good experience; the cold temps are definately a plus. One of these days Leni and I would sure like to get down there and join you on your ID pilgramage run.

I know it is just an excuse to get out, but did you catch anything? I got this 14" Dolly and lost a nice 20+ rainbow this weekend (I know, the big fish story).

It would be nice to know who all we have in our areas; we might be able to get more local flyouts, BBQ's etc. It is cool that Joey can get so much activity with folks down in his area, even with a vast difference in airplanes. As far as AK members on the forum, I think I know of 5 besides myself so it would be nice if others would identify themselves and where they are located in the state(s)

    That is awesome!
I love the shot from above the lake!

I went ice fishing for the first time a couple of years ago, in Colorado, with my buddies from Oklahoma. We drilled our first hole, the ice let out a "CRACK". And you had 4 Okies laying flat on the ice! The locals got a good laugh at that!

Anyway, I thought of that when I saw the shot from above with what looks like a couple of large cracks.

Awesome pics...now I'm motivated to build again!

    Thanks,
    Ron

Sweet! Is this a MK IV FWF package? If so, I would be interested in the radiator set up if it the the MK IV in cowl system. I would love to get rid of the belly mount radiator so I can sling a cargo pod under there.

There are close to a dozen guys here on the forum from AK, but only about half that are regular posters. I will keep looking into it as time allows and see if there is a way to filter geographically.

As far as I know the site has been good to go for a couple months now. The service provider assures me that the site is clean, it just takes forever to get the big search engines, namely google, to do a review of the site to make sure its clean on their books.

As I an typing this on the company computer, I can assure you that it has to be clean or the company firewalls and all the big brother crap they have on these computers would block me if the site was malicious.

    Larry,

I think that is the nuts and bolts of it. Several guys have stated that with their own testing, they have found that by mixing some 2 stroke oil in the gas it does not eat up the tanks that were pre-moonshine proof tank days (the older resins). The debate on MMO in the gas to help keep valves from sticking etc gets about as controversial as the infamous "down wind turn stall spin scenario" Every one has their own ideas on it and of course, each one thinks that only their opinion counts

Looks like an AWESOME day! Kev is about to head back up here for another season of heli skiing. I hope the snow firms up as we have some very dangerous avy conditions right now.

Amazing the performance difference in nice cold air huh! I keep forgetting about that pesky density altitude thing as we really don't need to worry about it with our temps here. Although, it is still a huge performance difference coming off the same lakes in the winter versus summer here. About the closest we could come to simulating density altitude during my initial training was taking off with the carb heat on do kill some of the engine performance.

I was referring to what we did to lower the lead content of 100LL, which has 4 times the lead in it as the old 87 for the aircraft type engines, by mixing it with mogas, which was a lot cheaper back then - and the oil added to the gas to help lube the valves might also protect the FG tanks a little bit from alcohol.
My Soob will do just fine on straight mogas.

First time on the Ice today
I flew 120NM East today into the Sierras to play on some Ice with another group. The ice was plenty thick and the snow was about 3 inches deep down to almost nothing depending on where you landed and what lake it was. We landed several spots. Had a BBQ and did some Ice fishing... pretty amazing around here considering at 4pm when I landed back at Sea Level it was 66 degrees. This morning when I landed Truckee it was 13. The first lake we hit was 7000ft. The Avid and my 582 with the Hacman leaned way out performed awesome as usual.

Well it kind of looks like we were all taking the same types of photos but I'll go ahead and add mine

Little VFR on top over Sac this morning

    Headed up the hill

One of a few firsts today...First landing on Ice/snow... First landing in the 7000ft range...First landing at 13 degrees in Truckee this morning!

Kev you should be a CFI. Awesome job today telling us what we needed to know to do this smart and safe. Here he is explaining the approach into the next stop.

    Another shot of Rob

Can't have too many pictures of your own airplane

Shot this one spiraling out to head home

    I'm at a loss here.

Why put anything in the gas on a 4-stroke? You're going to be running a Subaru auto motor, right? Does Subaru recommend certain fuel additives?

We all have our fingers crossed that the site is going to stay OK now - There are 2 or 3 more than you mentioned in Alaska, and a few in Canada - the rest are scattered around the lower 48, I guess. One in Europe, or maybe 2 that I know of. At least one more in AB, and maybe more?

I knew AK was Alaska and that is what started my curiosity. Like you I tried a search using AK with similar result. I have noted that you, Leni, and SuberAvid seem to be AK and was wondering how many more. Just curious.

So...........Now do we say the 2-cycle Synthetic is better than MM to put in your gas for the 4-strokes?
Is it worth the difference in cost?

No, you are ok Leni. I did buy a FWF 582 package for my Avid, but now that it is time to overhaul my 503 or switch to the 582, I am having second thoughts about doing that now. I think I might just stick with the 503. Now I will have a 582 grayhead for sale.

MMO has alot of solvent in it, I am sure it does burn more. 2 stroke does burn fine, but it probably does leave a bit of residue as it should. It is a petroleum product, it pretty much has to burn

My flying buddy just called me - He said he saw a demo at Oshkosh where they put MM oil on a railroad track, and the Synthetic 2 cycle on another part of it - took a torch to both sides, and when it cooled, the MM had burned away, and the 2C side was still slick.
    Mean something? I donno......

Didnt figure there was that much oil in the gas mix?
Going to tell my source to try your burn test - Maybe go back to MM oil.
