    Leni,

That is a great idea! I am guilty of not even checking my SPOT like I should, but really need to be sure it is set up with current numbers. Mine is the old model that only sends a pre canned message or the emergency notification. How would it work through a share page on the Forum? could it dial it up as a cell phone #?

I always feel a bit nervous shutting the engine down when I am out in the middle of nowhere by myself at -15 like today. It's beautiful but could be deadly, or dang uncomfortable.

Sounds like you may have a good plan for all pilots -
Now, in 25 very simple words or less, please tell an old Stearman pilot what the h is a SPOT, how does it work, and how much does it cost?

    Hey Guys,
I have a used set of the bungee style that I'm thinking I might sell. They're in good shape, I'm probably not going to put them on. I figure somebody ought to enjoy them. What do you think a fair price would be? Thanks, Bryce

    SPOT pages
    OK guys,

I have been thinking (yeah scares the hell out of me too) about some of the ways we can help each other out. I can think of several instances last summer on another forum where someone twisted up a plane in remote areas and when they hit the spot help me button the contacts on their list put the word on the forum immediately that a fellow member was down and needed help. The response was AMAZING to say the least and within mere minutes guys were launching to go help a buddy out. People from far and wide were offering assistance in anyway possible.

Some of us fly in some back country remote areas and just because we bend up a bird on a bad landing or something of that nature we don't really want to call in the Coasties or any other Gov. agency that may feel the need to charge us $$$$$$$$ just because we bent a prop and needed a little help.

With all this being said, what do you guys think about the idea of setting up an AFF share page or something of that nature that we can point our SPOT devices to in the event that we find ourselves in need a little help

Just something I was kicking around in my lil pea brain

Are you wanting the wide gear that uses the bungees? If so, I think it is around 750.00 If you want teh new "cub" style gear that uses springs instead of bungees then your looking at around 1200.

If you are having troubles getting a hold of Airdale, you can get the gear from highwing llc. Mark developed the gear before Airdale did and it should fit just fine if you get the gear for a model II or III KF. I know we have put the airdale wide gear on several KF so despite what KF or Airdale may say the gear is interchangeable.

I think that's about right. Less than $1500 at least.

Brett's a friend, so I don't want to speak bad of his situation, but if you talk to him on this be sure to get a firm ship date from him and put teeth in it that if not shipped by such date, the price is impacted.

    All I'm going to say.

One thing I would add, putting the protractor at the tip of the blade is probably more appropriate for the standard blades than the tapertip blades. The tapertip blades are only about 1 1/2" wide at the tip. With my taper tip, I mounted the protractor at the thickest part of the blade. Then of course you have to make sure the protractor is at the exact same distance from the tip on the other blade or blades as well. Also that the protractor is square with the blades. I still like my lazer prop setting tool better though. Take care, Jim Chuk

It is supposed to be 68F here Tuesday - If the rain stops, think I will go check on the J3, and look for a frozen lake. :lol:/>
I enjoy your photos and videos - about the most excitement here is finding black ice on the concrete with a crosswind!

    Prop Protractor Instructions wanted
I got a protractor on ebay, but no instructions -
Can anyone give me the basic instructions for using the protractor like the warp drive one?
Yes, I know you use the wingnuts to tighten it to the blade - but where on the blade?

Looks like fun Joey, I'm going to a ski flyin on a lake about 45 miles away on Saturday. Don't think the ice will be melting though. It was about -30F last night but it's supposed to warm up to a balmy +10 F Saturday. My heater works, but isn't all it could be at 0. I've been on straight skis for the last month. Love the winter flying up here in northern Mn. Take care, Jim Chuk

    Chris,

A buddy of mine uses his Supercub as a ski lift to drop off and pick up his kids where he can land high and low on a ridge/ drainage. It wouldn't do you much good flying solo though. I would highly recommend having a second spotter plane with you when you are looking for good locations and gradually work into the steeper stuff. I can't say that I am there yet.

Also, wheel skis may be your only option in the warmer climates but they greatly cut down your takoff performance vs straight skis.

I had the same combination of wheels/tires on my plane with a whole 10 hours on it when I did my nose stand on a lake with overflow (in the dumb stunts section). Best to use skis when there is anything over the ice unless you have ground confirmation. You may still get stuck but you probably won't flip.

I echo Leni's sentiments about the IVO IFA performance that makes it well worth the hassle of the motor issues. I would never have thought it possible to make such a change in my airplane and kind of bought mine on a whim because I hadn't done anything to my plane for a while (I can never just leave it alone). It out performed my highest expectations; most notably initially on the top end adding 15 mph in cruise; but them when I took it off for the first motor issue and put my Warp Drive back on until I got the motor back I really noticed the difference on the takeoff with two on board. I can get another 600 rpm on the bottom with the prop flattened out. I think I got a little less than 30 hours on the motor the first time and it bound up. I sent it back and they didn't replace it but said they got it working and to try it again. It lasted about another 30 hours and did the same thing. When I sent it back that time I think they replaced it. It has been going good since then but I would have to check my log book to see how many hours; I'm guessing another 30 or 40. Maybe the lower frequency vibration of hte Subie will prove to provide a better life expectancy from the motor; I would think the vibration of the 912 would be somewhere in between the Subie and the 582 but there are a lot of variables with the belt vs gear redrive and the rubber donut. From what I have read, you don't want to use one on a direct drive motor.

Chris, What have you heard/experienced with them on the 912?

So far both IVO and Warp Drive have been excellent to work with. I exchanged a used 2 blade Warp Drive with light duty hub for a 3 blade HD hub prop; then sent back that hub (SAE2) and exchanged it for an SAE1. They were very helpful and fair and the hub exchange was no charge. IVO repaired/replaced the motor both times without hassle and no charge. These guys both have been great.

I think the Warp will take more abuse than the IVO if you are cutting brush or doing nose stands with it (it is very tough from my experience) but the IVO IFA has the performance edge.

JackAk is going to try the whirlwind blades in his Warp Drive hub so that will be a great comparison to see how they perform!
