That same hypocracy seems to be just fine for all of the political ruling elite from "KingO" on down. They sure get it when it comes to protecting themselves. We are not as important as they are and neither are our kids. I wish the NRA had continued to run that add.

But in the now infamous words of Hilary; "what does it really matter at this point anyway?" so what if a few Americans are killed. I guess it is just unfortunate that those on the outside are sacrificial. They just couldn't use that one to further their agenda.

Evidently, so are our own troops; as Obama gives F-16's and M-1 tanks to those who hate us! Not to mention the non-muslim citizens of Egypt.

Ed, do you have a pic of your rudder?

The pic I posted is still different from the Avid Plus...the rudder I posted has a squared corner at the top. Must be a custom job. I like the squared look, but the Avid Plus would still be better than the Magnum tail. I don't like the round tail.

    Thanks,

The Avid+ rudder overlaps the VS.

I thought the Just STOL gear tied the outer shock support into the fusagae at about the bottom of the windshield or top outer engine mount but not at the front wing carrythrough as the Storch does, so I don't think it would have to have the wing mod. That gear sure has some travel in it; it looks like fun.

I know it seems to get pretty negative comments but the slatted/slotted wing still seems pretty intreaging to me. Just claims 10% faster on the top end and 10% slower on the bottom end. From the video it looks like theirs pops out instead of hinging to open. It looks like it would be somewhat punishing on the airframe to land it by dropping from the high angle of attack if you didn't have the long travel gear, but takoff should be able to take advantage of it without punishing a plane with regular bungee gear.

I built the latest set of bungees for my Avid+ using the 1/2" bungee material from AC Spruce and made them 100". They seem to be just right for my heavier Avid+ but it is about all two people can do to wrap the 1/2" bungee material.

Like Jim, I used safety wire to tie the end loops and there is a slick little tool from a company called ClampTite that makes the wire tied ends perfect, tight and secure every time. It is worth buying the tool and the bungee material to save a bunch in the long run.

I just ordered 36' of 3/8" bungee from Aircraft Spruce. Enough for two Avids. It's $1.22 per foot. I've made my own bungees several times before with no problem. Used safty wire to tie the loop at the end of the cable. Take two wraps of wire and pull the wire tight, make a twist or two in the wire to hold things in place, and then make a few more wraps with the wire, pulling it as tight as possible. Then twist the wire half a dozen times to hold it. You only need 16 feet of bungee to do one Avid with the 7 wraps, but I don't put the second loop on till everything is wrapped around the truss. That way you don't have a big loop you are trying to get though a hole that gets smaller with each wrap. Also, if the bungee is an extra foot long, it gives something to hold on to when you make the last wrap and go over the hook and your buddy has to hold the end of the bungee while you tie the loop with the safty wire. One other note, it really helps to mark the bungee with a magic marker where it will cross the top of the truss and the bottom of the gear tube. That way you know you are pulling it tight enough. A little math figuring number of wraps and overall length. Length is 90" or 92" inside loop to inside loop for the Avid if my memory is correct. Take care, Jim Chuk

PS, the Kitfox bungees are only about 5 or 6 feet long

It seemed like the Highlander bungies were a multi wrap design like Standard Avid/Kitfox bungies just on the strut.

We were taught how to make the bungee tool at UAA - I dont have one, since I was already into the Grove gear, and had the Atlee Dodge hydrosorb on my Maule.
And, bungees are supposed to be replaced every 5 years regardless, I think?

And the A.O.S.S is even better than the hydrosorb I think.

The bungees on the cub gear are a real bitch to change if you dont have the right tool. If you have the tool, they are easy to change. I can get pics of a cub gear when I get home if no one has any already. That will probably be the easiest to tune and to make, but as Ed pointed out, they are normally a one shot deal. You can put the bungees on with the tool, but you cut them off and have to replace them every time you swap the gear out.

Best guess is because you dont have to replace the springs often like the bungees? I thought the Hydrosorb gear that F. A. Dodge in Anchorage designed for the cubs/supercubs was much better than the old bungees.

    Hey Joey,
What happened with the Airdale Bush Gear? Was it a problem with stiffness and lack of travel? If so have you considered building bungie struts?

I would like to see the design of the Bungie Strut gear as in the Standard Highlander or the John Roberts gear without the Fox Float. I used a down sized version of the Bearhawk Gear struts but it is not easily tuneable. I believe the bungies could provide more travel and be easier to tune. If anyone has pictures of the strut parts without the bungie installed I would like to see it.
    Thanks Dave

I cant tell whether the rudder in the photo overlaps the VS. The original Airdale #1 did not - It was just more squared than the Avid. It was one of the first 5 in production - Maybe the design changed after that?
My designed rudder overlaps the VS, but looks more like the J3, rather than at an angle - My elevators have the angled overlap design - all will be balanced with some lead weights.

I got a set from McBean they were 60" long eye to eye. I think I got 5-6 wraps. They were quite thick material, 5/8" or 3/4", maybe?

Kitfox Bungee lengths and number of wraps
I am going to order a set of bungees from Highwing LLC. I found a chafe in one of mine the other day and they are going on 3 yrs and 1000 landings. Cheap insurance if you ask me to just replace em. Avid bungees are 90" and have 7 wraps. Just curious what the Kitfox manual has for length and # of wraps. Sounded like Mark would make them any length I wanted but if you don't specify they are for a Kitfox. Is longer with more wraps better? Shorter with 6 wraps? Does it matter? While were on the topic attached is an instruction manual I found a long time back for wrapping them. I've used this technique twice and it works really well.

    The statue
A woman was in bed with her lover when she heard her husband opening the front door. "Hurry!" she said, "stand in the corner." She quickly rubbed baby oil all over him and then she dusted him with talcum powder."Don't move until I tell you to," she whispered. "Just pretend you're a statue.""What's this, honey?" the husband inquired as he entered the room."Oh, it's just a statue," she replied nonchalantly. "The Smiths bought one for their bedroom. I liked it so much, I got one for us too."No more was said about the statue, not even later that night when they went to sleep. Around two in the morning the husband got out of bed, went to the kitchen and returned a while later with a sandwich and a glass of milk.

"Here," he said to the 'statue' .."eat something. I stood like an idiot at the Smiths' for three days and nobody offered me as much as a glass of water!"

No doubt about it Larry, that is ONE BAD ASS bump soaking gear system! It is a little more than I think I need I learned how to land so I dont gotta test it with the 10' drop every time

Here is the file from the Yahoo group that shows roughly how to build the gear. I noticed that his pull is straight across on the cabane vee, where the super cub and other gear like it are not a straight pull. I will talk to my engineer buddy today and see how or why/if it transfers the loads differently. At any rate, using this document, I dont see any tough road blocks for a do it yourself guy to modify the existing wide gear to the spring gear. I may change out the tubes at the top of the gear legs to use 5/16" or 3/8" bolts instead of the 1/4" .

    Phone repair
A Kansas farm wife called the local phone company to report her telephone failed to ring when her friends called - and that on the few occasions, when it did ring, her dog always moaned right before the phone rang.

The telephone repairman proceeded to the scene, curious to see this psychic dog or senile lady. He climbed a telephone pole, hooked in his test set, and dialed the subscriber's house.

The phone didn't ring right away, but then the dog moaned and the telephone began to ring.

Climbing down from the pole, the telephone repairman found:

1 . The dog was tied to the telephone system's ground wire with a steel chain and collar.

    2. The wire connection to the ground rod was loose.

    3. The dog was receiving 90 volts of signaling current when the number was called.

4.. After a couple of jolts, the dog would start moaning and then urinate.

    5. The wet ground would complete the circuit, thus causing the phone to ring.

Which demonstrates that some problems CAN be fixed by pissing and moaning.
    Thought you'd like to know.

Ed, I have no idea what the #1 prototype looks like, but the current Airdale rudder (there are/were several hanging on the wall in Brett's shop) looks like the photo.

Here's Sputzee - My friend's hybrid plane. Not the best shot of the rudder, but you can see it is the same. This is the current "Airdale" rudder.

The "bush gear" style cabine gear is design-limited on it's travel, regardless of what kind of spring/shock arrangement is used. The wheels spread out too dramatically for it to work efficiently.

This is one of the reasons Troy & the boys did a clean sheet design on the "Super STOL" gear. That gear design is amazing if you haven't seen it work. Watch closely in this video, you see the wheels spread, but not much. This is why it works so well...

I have photos of Airdale #1 - the rudder is squared and larger than the Avid - BUT, it is not like the photo, and does not overlap the VS.
