    Doug,
I will certainly go back and recheck the numbers for you. I believe I posted the weight on this before - maybe when talking to SuberAvid - Havent taken my memory pills this morning, but believe the advertised weight was around 210? - 215? - well, it could be more - you know that the advertizers usually try to make it lighter than the actual installation - that's how they sell engines.
I think I have this in Kitplanes mag for this year. Will check and post later on.
I have wished for an alternative for the E-81, since all the later Soobs that Eggenfeldner and others are building are up in the 260 - 300 weights.
This engine could also be longer than the EA-81, putting it farther out of balance?
This has a few more ponies than the Soob, but I would stay with the proven Stratus or RAM EA-81 if I was buying a new engine.

  2. C5Engineer added a post in a topic What's the proper way to repair this?

My Avid tow set up has tubes that attach at the strut attach point on the fuse and go up to the leading edge spar on the wing and that end is held in place with the same pin as the wing. This supports the wing from bouncing. I know it's too late but all the plans for the factory built trailers back in the 90s were designed to tow backwards with the tail level. Hope your able to get it fixed relatively easily. Please post a thread with the repairs in case anyone else comes across this situation,.

    10 day Daddy-Daughter road trip
I just returned home from a week long trip to North Central Idaho where I grew up. It was just my 3.5 year old daughter and myself. The drive was pretty brutal but she actually did pretty good considering I put just shy of 2000 miles on my truck. I hadn't been home with her since she was 6 months old. There was plenty of firsts this trip for sure. I hope she remembers some of it! I know I will!!  Some of you guys will be familiar with this area.    Coming over the top of the Whitebird Hill looking at the Grangeville Prarie     There were a couple of NASTY snow squawls across the Gville Prarie. I wouldn't want to get caught in one of these bad boys! I've never seen something like this surrounded by Blue sky     A typical Idaho road on GPS. This one happens to be the Greer Grade where Hwy 11 leaves Hwy 12     My daughter near Aquarius campground on the Northfork of the Clearwater River. I grew up in this same area....was awesome watching my own kid play there.        First time on a 4-wheeler           There were a ton of awesome waterfalls up there this time of year from the Runoff     First time meeting Great Gma     Playing in my parents backyard...the same one I grew up in     First time roasting a weenie on a real campfire      City park in Orofino Idaho     First time driving a boat...even if it was on the trailer she had fun     More 4-wheeler riding     Stopped by Rome Station on the way home...Strip is dry and in good shape. They have 87 ethanol fuel available for about $4.50 a gallon. If nothing else they have a bathroom and some snacks if you find yourself in that area and needing a break.      I decided to play with my Drift a little bit. The editing on this is really lame but you get the idea.    My attempt at some nature video using my Drift camera. Watch in High Def and full screen if your connection allows it.      Like I said... what an amazing trip! It's tough to do these types of things when you live in the city. I am going to try harder to get to the mountains more often. I had forgotten how awesome it is growing up where you don't have to worry about getting hit by a car or snatched up by someone.

Fairbanks suxs in the summer and winter!  IMO    Soldotna is about 55 air miles South of Anchorage (150 if you drive)  I could still fly ski's off the local lakes right now, but I am sure that will all be gone when I get home in 3 more weeks.

In general, Fairbanks is the hottest area in the state in the summer, and the coldest area in the winter.  Yes, there are many times when it is -20 here on the edge of the world at Kuparuk and it is -55 400 miles south in Fairbanks..

Being real close to the water does keep the Kenai Peninsula alot more mild on the temps for the most part in the winter, but it still gets cold enough to make the salt water freeze into huge ice pans in Cook Inlet.  Nothing like being out on one of the platforms when the ice is in the inlet and the 12 knot tidal current starts slamming those ice bergs into the legs of the platform.  I have litterally been thrown out of bed in the middle of the night it gets to rocking so violently.

OK, back to your flying thread

Ed - are you sure about the "a lot heavier than the Soob" issue? I don't recall seeing that?

In any event, I think we live somewhere in the same neighborhood near the intersection of Stubborn and Skeptical Streets. More importantly, if someone takes me on a one way ride down Brown Alley after I've trusted them, there's about -zero- likelihood you'll ever see the two of us together again short of a fist fight.

That said, the following retort to comments very similar to yours (copy 'n paste from TKF forums) softened my stance on Jan somewhat, particularly since I really, really want the Honda engine conversion to succeed. We desperately need more options that don't cost $20k+ to keep the homebuilders in the game. And while I might not be ready to plunk down my cash yet, like John, I think this engine could make for a good Avid+ FWF.

Of course, anyone going this route with Jan's (or anyone's) auto conversion needs to keep in mind that it's not just the difficulties associated with the engine install itself, lots of other risks to consider vs. a tried and true turnkey install and manufacturer. Safe to say I still know a lot of happy Sube drivers in spite of Jan's past history and the lack of current turnkey Sube FWF's. I hope the E10 87 Octane lovin' 100hp EFI Honda finds an equal level of success!

Leni, I was just looking at the map, wasn't sure exactly sure where Soldotna really was. How would the weather be in Fairbanks now. I'm sure being close to the ocean warms your area quite a bit. Jim

I wish I could get down there but NC is a big state and the northern coast is about 9 hours drive for me and the kitfox is still grounded.

It's a beatiful area though, I especially love Billy Graham and Okracroke airport south a bit on the outer banks.

I am so warry of Eggenfeldner that I would buy an engine from the Devil before buying anything from him!
Dave Johnson was making this conversion before he died.
There is another outfit making this same conversion, and I would buy theirs instead.
This might be a good conversion, but it is a lot heavier than the Soob, which is heavier than a C-90 or O-200, which is heavier than a 912, which is heavier than a 2-cycle .... Well, you get the message on that.
I have my reasons - and I don't know the man, but I know the reputations of his engines, and IMO, it is not good.
    my 2cents worth.

    Poly-spray needed
Hi all, I've been working on the Avid MK IV that I had to land in a to short field a year and a half ago. Back when I thought full coverage was to expensive. Need a couple or 3 full cans, maybe some reducer and poly brush if you want to get rid of it also. Thanks, Jim

Look often and call quick! If you aren't first and it's a super good deal, you probably aren't going to get it. Jim

PS our latest big snow storm is going just south of us right now. Sounds like the Duluth area and northern Wi are going to get another foot of snow!

new viking 110 -- honda fit core conversion
i've been following this new conversion by the well known, sub converter, jan eggenfeldner.  this time he's using the honda fit core with mods to make it airworthy, using all his knowledge from the sub experience.  he's located his factory in central fla & seems to be doing really well. he began shipping engines back in early 2012 & now has flying machines from several big kit sellers (incl just ac  & kitfox which are very similar to the avid design. )  he just added an all metal kitplane from new zealand (i think), that seems also to be related to the avid design, with folding wing.  visit his web site for all kinds of vids & info.  if i were ready to buy an engine for my fat avid i think it would be jan's viking. seems a good fit for the larger plus size. jan had a display at sun n fun.  fyi.  john bowman, prvlle, la.

Take a look at EZFLAP  about the same situation on certified planes like the pacer, 180-185 etc with manual flaps.  You have to put you head and eyes BELOW the panel to grab the flap handle.  EZ came up with a solution that is much like yours only different

Found this pic in my old KF3 Ideas folder, nice clean look but doesn't solve my 'reach' issue. I think this is the only other orange powder coat frame I've ever seen. I'm guessing not too many ordered but it's been growing on me!

We're stuck a second night in Piqua OH due to a cracked exhaust head pipe on an Allegro. Welding tomorrow am.

Spent the day at Wright-Patterson museum. Very cool. Worth the trip.

The weather on the coast is crap, so we may turn south tomorrow. Yet to be seen.

If its just small areas I used a wire wheel and it takes it right off.  you can also hit the area with a propane torch and just warm it up and the coating will bubble up and come right off.  Clean up with a hand wire brush.  I am not talking about hitting the tubes with the torch till they turn bright red   just warm them up enough for the coating to bubble up and your golden.
