    Avid Resale Values
    Folks -

Is there a definitive guide to pricing and values of an Avid? I'm getting close to closing on one and this perplexes me.

In this case, I've come across a '93 C in the hands of it's builder who's had it stored since '99 and claims no damage history. It has 330 TTAF, 582 Gray is majored and still in it's shipping crate. Avionics consist of basic and a vintage Garmin 100. HH wings. It also has an IFA IVO prop, 14 gal fglass wing tanks. What would be the low-end price, what the high-end?

I'm an A&P with time in Tcraft and PA140. Been out of flying for 20-yrs and getting back into the sport.

If anyone has a favorite Avid Insp/Pre-Purchase inspection they'd like to pass on, I'd be grateful. I've search about the board - if I missed it (or pricing), apologies.

    Many thx,
    Paul in NC

Just did some quick calculations, and looked at my WB.  It showed empty plane weighs 584, moment was 7071.5 for a CG of 12.10"  I used 415 lbs. for people at 16" back and 150 lbs. fuel at 33" back.  (I measured my fuselage, and the back of the seat tubing is 30" behind the leading edge of the wing so guessed at a tank of 6" thick front to back).  I end up with a CG of 16.24 with those numbers and total weight of 1149 lbs..  One problem, is you will have issues folding the wings with a tank behind the seat as well as fitting it in there and filling it with fuel.  Hope this helps.  Jim

If you put 150# behind the seat, you can bet that the bugger will not be nose heavy, but she is gonna be tail heavy, not to mention the constant change in CG as you burn the gas off.  If you are that worried about it, just have him make a tank that will drop into your fiberglass tanks.  Cut the top out of the tank, slip the new one in, screw a lid back on like a cub.  This will keep the fiberglass tank as a structural member of the wing, yet eliminate the other issues that both the fiberglass and the aluminum tanks had/have.

I have the factory trailer. It is so easy to load. Back plane up to trailer, set tailwheel in ramp, hook up to boat winch. Pull on trailer, lock axles on trailer. Fold wings, drive off. Bought my airplane in Port Angeles, Washington. Loaded on trailer, drove 1300 miles home, everything happy.

That being said, I have a hangar and I will be keeping it in there. I will be towing the plane when I go on vacation. Wife can shop and I can go exploring. The entire package weighs less that a 1000 lbs. Actually hooked it up to my Harley and pulled it to the gas station to fill up. Got some very strange looks.

I understand that each one is different. What I am specifically looking for is the effect of placing a fuel tank behind the seat. Am getting very tired of the fiberglass fuel tank discussions. Can have aluminum fuel tank made by a airplane machinist friend of mine very in expensively but am somewhat concerned about 150 lbs behind the seat.

Not sure what you gain from someone else's WB.  Unless their plane is identical to yours, it wouldn't apply to your plane.  Generaly speaking, most Avids with a 2 stroke engine are on the nose heavy side of the envelope.  Heavier engines make this worse.  Putting battery further back and such help to avoid adding extra weight to the tail.  If you just want the form. I can scan one of mine and get it to you,   Jim Chuk

PS  if you have the builder's manual, Section VIII-D chapter 8 walks you through doing the WB

Just liked the look. If does not work out is easy enough to finish covering. Was really looking for any experience someone had flying one. Used to fly a quicksilver, think it might be similar. I guess I will give a report if I ever get done.

I have suggested this to others - When the Cessna 150 was first converted to a "Texas Taildragger",
They left the nosewheel on for students. That is always a cheaper option.
I have some nosewheel info that I am happy to share with anyone interested.
Guess I have gotten lazy in my old age - don't feel like fighting TD if I have a choice - so mine is definitely going to be a nosedragger. All I have to worry about is wearing out tail skids!

I found out that someone had turned my speakers off - went back and listened to that sweet-sounding radial - sure brought back some memories of growing up.
My flying buddy owned a T6 at one time - We were working at Chrysler, a half a mile or better from the little airport, I could hear him doing practice TOs and landings while I was at work - made me want to get out and enjoy the sunshine! He still regrets selling it - the J3 just isn't the same!
Wonder if I got cancer from holding the flag, grinding asbestos, using MEK and acetone, or laying up and grinding fiberglas, or breathing welding fumes at Chrysler, or a combo of all of past sins? I still wonder what the Army did to me!
If I get the chance, I am going for a ride in a WACO or Stearman again someday.

At this moment, I doubt I'll be there for the next several Fridays.  (That whole work thing getting in the way of my flying again!)

If you get over to Airventure, I'll be there for the week...

No, not Clete and not quite such a nice Clipper as Cleets. But, still a nice ole Clipper my good friend Pete lets me fly, as recently as tonight.

I believe your friend in the great looking red KF landed at 9'. Only beat me by 35'.

I'll likely be there next Friday. I'll have to keep my eye open for those nice looking KFs and maybe realize before you guys are taking off. It's usually close to noon by time I get there so not so likely to walk around or see who's landing.

BTW, darned if I can not recall or figure out how to get pics up here so this post is less useless than tits on a bore.

Not to mention the Rotax 582 can't power all those instruments and lights.  I need to switch to LED lights for sure.

I have big plans for this airplane without spending a ton of money.  I need to pay off the new IVO IFA first.

What kind of cruise speeds should I achieve with this new prop?   It's 72" 3 blade.  I may also need new tires, the prop barely clears the ground with the tail up.

I'm also very interested in a nose wheel.  I am a tail wheel "purist".  I love the tail wheel but my girlfriend wants to fly some and the tailwheel is a bit much for her to learn on.

turn the volume up, I hear the sweet sweet sound of that radial as he was making his passes... sends shivers up my spine every time!  I wish my buddy would get off his wallet and get his stearman rebuilt versus him dragging it out till he is too old to fly the damn thing.

I got one flight in one in Hawaii.. I would give my left nut to fly one here on a hot summer day like we had a couple weeks ago.  85 degrees, radial rumbling, wind in the hair.... damn, I would forget which stick I needed to grab to fly with!
