I know a P.O.'d bear can charge or run pretty darn quick but that target really shows just how fast you need squeeze off your shots. Now add in getting your gun out ofthe holster and shooting over your shoulder (dunno if I could resist the instinct to turn and run! ) ), so good on anyone for putting all in the plate! That sure does look like a fun time even as an ATV outing but flying in takes the cake. Jeff, even if you sell your Avid tomorrow you will have some great memories with it and, courtesy of Randy, some spectacular air-to-air shots.

Great shots Randy! I love the pics of the planes hiding in the woods. They look right at home! That's the way I like to see them not lined up on a big asphalt ramp somewhere. Those air to air shots are really nice too. You guys have it way to good. I'd love to spend sometime flying low and slow up there in that kind of weather. Looking at that hillside with those departure pics I was thinking man that would be fun to slip down the face of that!

Nice set up! Can you elaborate a little bit on your rudder lock? I put mine above the wings because the flaperons tuck in pretty close to the vertical stab. It tends to slide down and rub on the flaperons going down the road. I just have a couple of 2x4's covered in carpet with a bolt and wingnuts to clamp it down.

    I've been running the Aero-Classics 8.00 x 6 x 21 tires for a couple years now and love them.

Plenty big for what I need. I'll be running them tubeless on grove wheels on my mangy fox project.

I'll add my pictures in with Jeff's.  The charging bear target was a lot of fun.  I managed to kill the bear but not with a stellar performance; I can see that I need to get more shooting time in!

The wrecked plane looked like a PA12; back seat frame was wider than the pilot's seat.  Definately looked like a bad day for that poor guy.

It was a little bumpy that day but the wind was in our favor for landing and take off on the strip.  We were cruising pretty slow so ground speed was in the 90's going up and less than 50 coming back.  Throttled back like that I burned just over 6 gals in 2.2 hours on the hobbs.

A neat place; I love those old mines to explore in.

  7. C5Engineer added a post in a topic Tire size

John Miller from the Avid group runs them. They just look smaller than the Nanco's are def are not as wide and I'm sure they don't float as well over rough stuff. If your just looking to be safer landing on grass, gravel, dirt roads, etc they would be much better than an 800 I think. Here they are side by side. This shows a good comparison too of how much height you pick up with the Airdale Bush Gear over the stock gear. If you haven't already gotten your Matco TW yet shell out a few extra bucks and get the dual fork it's shorter than the single arm version in vertical height you gain from the bigger tire. What size are you going with? The 7" tire and tube set up is garbage don't waste your time. I wasted a few hundred bucks doing that when I should of went straight to the 8" one.

    Tire size
Have any of you tried the 21 inch dresser tire for the 6 inch rim. Will be installing the Matco pneumatic tailwheel so I will probably need the extra height on the mains. Since the strip at our airport is blacktop I will probably be using a 20 acre graded gravel area beside the strip for landing ant take off. Pretty smooth but some flotation can't hurt.
    Suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks

I thought about making mine out of Kevlar - for about a minute - then I remembered all my years of doing fiberglass, and quickly bought aluminum ! Lots cheaper too!

Soooo... How did Randy do, did he get the bear or did the bear get him

Looks like a cub frame twisted up there... That did not look like it was much fun to be in at all!

    Fun at the Gold Mine
Here is a short vid of Randy practicing his charging bear shooting skills.  There are also pictures.  We had a great day.  The landing strip is actually at 2500 msl as opposed to 4000 msl that I had posted earlier.  Picture of a plane wreckage.  Randy can describe it better than me.  Wind was blowing pretty good that day.  We were preparing for the fly in, walk in, atv in, mens retreat coming up this weekend.

The one picture with the cloud coming over the mountain reminded me of the danger of down drafts that can ruin your day.

    Enjoy

I took out my wood floor boards and only use the bottom aluminum pan. Gives my size 14 skids more room and lightens up the plane. Joey, those pedals could move forward a good 1 1/2". Bryce

CPS has a new updated site
Got an email about this today

Looks a lot more user friendly than their old site. Glad they got with the times. I hated that old site. Unless you knew exactly what you were after it was impossible to find anything.

Here's a pic of mine from way back in the early days. I've always wished I had my leg room. Do my rudder pedals look quite a ways forward compared to your guys' planes? I have quite a bit of room behind them.

Check with any specialty lumber yards or craft shops out your way. They usually have the marine ply for cheaper than having sheet deiivered.

    Thanks,

I guess it is 1/8 marine ply. Thanks for the pics, that is not what I had in my head, looks easier and better. Always learn from others, saves lots of work.

    Larry-

If you have tank #12070 (0.50Qt 3.8"H x 5.531"W x 3"D), it won't fit on the firewall behind the airfilter. You must have it located between the top of the firewall and top of the air filter. Right?

If yes, I thought the throttle and choke cable pass thru location on our firewall require the tank be located in such a way that the top left corner of the tank would extend past the edge of the firewall? At least, I did a quick measure and didn't expect it to fit on mine.

[edit] Ok, I read the product description a little closer. Width includes mounting tabs. Height includes neck & fittings. Based on that, I suspect the tank body itself with mounting tabs will (barely) fit and, assuming the fitting is behind the filter and tank located as far down and right as possible, the top left corner of the tank and the cap should -just- fit under the cowl without interference. And, I mean, by a fraction of an inch. How tight is your installation?

Avid and Kitfox supplied 1/8" plywood with their kits. Just did some checking in the ACS catalog, and 2'X4'X1/8" plywood weighs about 3.5 lbs. Same size piece of aluminum is 14 lbs. 1/16" thick aluminum would probably be okey, but it would still be twice as heavy as the 1/8" plywood. Jim Chuk
