Here it is now at 540 or so. The 484 is just what was in the paperwork I got with the airplane. I'm wondering how they weighed it because I don't know how I picked up 60 lbs.

Pretty short takeoff at the beginning. This is with not much wind and about 20 gallons of fuel on board. With less than 10 gallons of gas and a 15kt headwind it's really exciting.

Sure can I will just have to do it another day.  484lbs is pretty damn light.  What kind of takeoff roll did you have?

Leni,I think the foam, and exposed wood on the ribcaps should be covered with urethane or spar varnish to seal it. Had not thought about the POLY products melting it.
The thought of cutting out about 30 identical plywood parts does not thrill me - If I could find a laser-cutter to do it, that would be a lot better.
    Thanks,
    EDMO
I found a local laser-cutter - now just got to get a price. They also do metals, so probably going to get my flap hangers done there too. I have the 1/4 inch plywood to make the rib mods.

With no electric starter, a 532, and a basic set up mine weighed 484 originally.

Good to know.  I'm thinking about taking on an ultimate STOL plane project when my finances smooth out.  If he has not flown this airplane in years, which the airport owner confirmed for me then he may be willing to sell.  He has 4 other homebuilts he flies on a regular basis.  Might be a good deal for a non-flying model B.  I hear they are very lightweight which is always a plus

Almost identical to the Kitfox 2. If it had cheek radiators that is an upgrade they did. The originally had the scoop on the side like my airplane does. Mine was a B but had the Heavy Hauler STOL wings added later with wing tanks so no dash tank.

From the Avid Brochures the files section

A models had Behind Panel Gas Tank, Wheel Barrow type wheels, Cable Brakes, Welded Engine Mount. Wood side and belly stringers

B models had Behind Panel gas tank, Alloy Wheels with cable brakes, Bolt on Engine Mount with Radiator stuck on the outside of fuselage just in front of Passenger door Upto about ser # 250. had a bulge glassed to cowling as air scoop for rad.

C models had wing tanks--some alu some Fiberglass, Matco Hydraulic disc brakes and wheels, Matco Tailwheel with 11/4" tailspring, Bolt on Engine Mount, Radiator inside the cowling at an angle on firewall passenger side. ser #'s 250C-900C Wood belly stringer.

MkIV had Redesigned Vagabond Style Cowling, Front mounted radiators, fiberglass wing tanks, Matco Hydraulic disk brakes and wheels, Maule Tailwheel with 11/2" tailspring, Offset taken out of fin, Offset
front mounting taken out of Stabiliser! Steel Tubing Dorsal, Belly, and side stringers. External Baggage Locker. Ser #'s 900D to around 1550D.

Bandit was a Stripped down MkIV. Ser#'s range as per MkIV BUT suffix"E" There was no difference in Firewall engine Mounting pattern from B models onwards as ALL the frames came from the same jig. Only the firewall back part of the jig changed from B onwards. Avid sold upgrades from one model to the next, eg Rotax 532 engine Mount/upgrade for A model--as the A model engine mount had to be cut from the A model frame and the Builder welded up the firewall parts some differenes could occur here.

    Avid "B" Information
Hi all, as most of you know I'm a kitfox owner and know little about avids other then they kinda look like my airplane (no idea why  )

I was walking around the local airport today and there was a shed with a door open so I peeked inside and what did I find?  A nice little, very basic Avid "B" with an inverted 582 and cheek radiators sitting on grove gear.

Looks like she hasnt been flown in a few years and she had a new Warp Drive prop mounted up front and a GSC prop on the ground that had been prop struck bad.

I immediately notived the fuel tank was in the panel.  The brakes were also cable actuated.

What other differences are there in the Model "B" from other Avids/Kitfox's?

    Ed,

I would make a plywood web to fill the void, or even look at using 6MM depron to do it.  This is not a structural component, it just needs to help it hold shape,  My only concern would be the foam melting when I hit it with the poly tac or poly brush.  You shouldn't have an issue using the stewarts system.

Larry, I hated those engines in the boats.. Loud and obnoxious sumbitches they are.. but easy to work on!  Ran 4-53s 6-71s and 8-71s.  I loved the 3208 cat in the boat, but it was a bitch to work on compared to the -71s

I am not sure what the issue is.  It sometimes hangs up on me too.  What browser are you running?  It seems to happen more on IE than it does on Chrome or Firefox.

Bandit try a brand new thread. I had this issue yesterday. After I started a new posting it worked for some reason. Instead of clicking on submit hit preview and you will be able to see whether or not it embedded before you submit it.

Hey Dave, welcome to the neighborhood. I remember seeing your Avid on BS and thinking it was a good looking bird. Glad to see the builder thought ahead and added the extensions right outta the gate to keep the twist reasonable. Do you know how much twist you actually have? I built long spar wings using speed ribs and 1-1/2" twist but wish I used less. What other mods are you planning?

What they are talking about is not a vent, but a pitot pressure tube going to the top of the tanks. This is needed in these planes...

Thanks Ed but no there are not any nextended tubes on top of the caps. I will probably be installing poly tanks and will make sure to mod the caps with the vent tubes. I dont have to fold the wings too often since i am lucky enough to fly out from my house.

    Dave,
I think what Joey may be pointing you toward is the need for extended tubes on top of the caps to prevent spill when wings are folded, and the possibility of siphoning, a vacuum or no positive pressure on tanks when in flight.

It has speed wings with the wing tip extensions added during the build. The fuel caps appear to be the automotive style with the built in vents.

MODIFYING UNDERCAMBER TO KITFOX 4 RIBS
If you looked at my post about KITFOX RIBS, then you have seen the drawings comparing the Eppler undercambered ribs to the Harry Riblett Kitfox 4 ribs.

If you use the Harry Riblett modification as shown in VGs ON BOTTOM, then you would have a problem getting the bolt into both your rear strut fittings and the rear jury strut fittings, causing you to:
    1. change the rear strut fitting to make it taller, which would:
    A. Change the incidence of the wing, or
    B. Shorten your rear strut,
    C. This would change position of flaperons, controls length, etc.
Neither of these are areas I want to start changing!
    2. make your rear jury strut fittings longer - a simple thing to do.

By modifying the undercamber profile to match the Kitfox 4 ribs, as shown in the attached photos, you will do 2 simple things:
    1. cut off and move your trailing edge about 1 to 1 1/2 inches forward, and
    2. make your rear jury strut fittings longer.
IMO, this is the easier change to make.

Hopefully, this mod will erase the 90mph wall that the undercamber hits, and it will eliminate the nose-down force produced by the undercambered ribs, while not hampering stol performance.

I estimate that the new 1/8 x 1 x 38 inch capstrips from Spruce cost me about $52, less what VGs would cost, and I can always add VGs later if I want to.

This is just a crude workup - I used gorilla glue on the wood dowels on this, but you could use aluminum tubing for the spacers, and I intend to use 9460 epoxy to attach all of this.

Someone may have a better way, or a suggestion to make this better, and you can feel free to post your ideas here.
I am going to try to attach 3 photos - the first two are a mod for the hanger ribs. I did not want to cut these because of the black area which shows the cutout on my ribs - I just trimmed the lower cap off and added an aluminum angle to each side to glue fabric to, and the last is a non-hanger rib, and I cut the end off and will move the trailing edge forward as shown.
I plan on using clear-tape or Saranwrap on the ribs to fill up the spaces with a can of foam, unless someone has a better idea - I can make a mess with a can of foam!
Thanks for reading - hope this helps someone.
