And this builder is going with heavier metal than the KF mod....No such thing as "too strong", IMO.

My Catalina suffered some similar cracks in the rib tails at the flaperon attachment points while I was trailering her from Florida to Seattle.  Wish I understood better exactly how it happened, because the plane was shrink wrapped pretty well and the control surfaces secured.   I suspect some sort of flutter or long-term vibration damage, because there was additional damage found on the flaperons themselves- the rivets securing the flaperon skin to the flaperon spars were all loose and showing powdered metal.

Anyway, the Catalina's brackets sandwich the rib tail pretty well- it just moved the crack point further up and pulled the rib tail away from the rib top cap.   I'm thinking of making a new bracket that not only sandwiches the rib tail, but also extends up over the top cap.

I'll post some pictures tomorrow when I get home.

There are probably minor variations in the wall thickness of all spars - probably enough for you to get .005 difference in both of your readings.
IMO, if you stay at your Avid GW of 950, you are the same weight as the Kitfox 2 with the 3/4 struts - If you plan on the increase of GW to 1050, then you might want to splice some 7/8 tubing to the cut-off ends of your 3/4 struts - that is the increase they made for the Kitfox 3 at 1050.
I don't think that you would notice any flight difference in the tips, except that the Kitfox tips are a lot heavier than the Avid tips.
The only Avid fuselage strut attachment I have seen is different than the Kitfoxes I have - and I don't think they will interchange without modifications somewhere. I forgot which you have - If you have (xxxxAvidxxxx Correct this to read Kitfox) struts, then they should fit with no problem.
The biggest thing is getting your spar to fuselage bolts in - you might have to enlarge the holes to make them match.
There's my 2 cents worth - for what it is worth - why put off flying when you have wings!
    EDMO
Well - I sure screwed this up - got it bassackwards - You are going the other way - blah - blah - blah! The Avid wings are about 3 feet shorter span than the Kitfox, but unless you are trying to set some STOL records, it probably wont matter.
P.S. I am TOTALLY OPPOSED to riveting the tank to the spars - I would not drill all those holes in my spars - Kitfox didn't drill theirs - Just used GE Silicone II. That's my 5 cents worth!

There's nothing like a good pair of "Lord Boards"! I personally have a pr of Keens. Couldn't make it through the summer without them! Doug, I wear a size 14 so I had the same problem with my feat hanging up in everything up front until I:
    1. Removed the wooden floor board- yes my heels rest on the Aluminum floor cover.
    2. Angled my rudder pedals 15-20deg forward, as far forward as allowable with full rudder and brake throw.
    3. Beat out towards the engine the 90 deg corner in the firewall.
There's enough room down there now that Big Foot could work the rudder pedals, with his work boots on! Bryce

    Avid A wings on a KF 3???
Looking for informed opinions on the prospect of using my Avid A wings that have been hanging in the garage for 25 yrs on my KF3.   As far as I can see, the dimensions all match although I haven't tried to actually fit them up.
The spars are .070 and the KF 3 are .060.
The spar stiffener is plywood instead of the KF I beam
The struts are .75 instead of .875 on the KF.
The Avid A is rated at 950 gross and the KF is rated at 1050.
The Avid A has rounded wing tips and the KF has droop tips.
The Avid A has trailing edge cable and KF has formed TE.

    My thoughts:
The main difference is the struts (which I suppose I could have a .875 or 1.0 set made,)  I would guess the shear on the bolts is less than the yeild on the .75 tubing, although I gues if would fair even worse than the .875 if I ever flip it again.  (the .875 didn't want to support the Fuselage in the inverted position without bending)
My guess is that the primary gross weight limit on the Avid A is with the  Fuselage and landing gear not the wing.  Is there something I am missing?
The flaperons and airfoil seem to be identical.  Is that correct?
Since I have the extra fuel tanks, I am thinking of adding at least one if not two to the avid wings.  This will require removal of a drag tube, but the tanks are rivited in so should take the drag load.
Any opinions on the droop tips vs rounded or the cable vs formed T.E.
Also considering inserting a strip of 1/8 plywood in the center thirtd of the spars and filling each side with foam to increase rigidity.  Any thoughts?

Thanks for your help, I'm dying to get back in the air, but can't afford the 200 hrs to build a whole new set of wings.  My other option is to buy a complete set of KF 3 wings I found for sale and ship them to AK.  Still no struts though.

    Sex on Mars
    Sex On Mars

The year is 2222 and Charlie and Maureen land on Mars after
    accumulating enough Frequent Flier miles.

They meet a Martian couple and are talking about all sorts of things.
Charlie asks if Mars has a stock market, if they have laptop computers, how they make money, etc.

Finally, Maureen brings up the subject of sex.

'Just how do you guys do it?' asks Maureen.

The Martian responds, 'Pretty much the way you do.'

A discussion ensues and finally the couples decide to swap partners for the night and experience one another... Maureen and the male Martian go off to a bedroom where the Martian strips.. He's got only a teeny, weenie member about half an inch long and just a quarter-inch thick.

'I don't think this is going to work,' says Maureen..

'Why?' he asks. 'What's the matter?'

'Well,' she replies, 'it's just not long enough to reach me!'

'No problem,' he says, and proceeds to slap his forehead with his palm. with each slap of his forehead, his member grows until it's quite impressively long.

'Well,' she says, 'that's quite impressive, but it is still narrow.'

'No problem,' he says, and starts pulling his ears. With each pull, his member grows wider and wider until the entire measurement is extremely exciting to the woman.

'Wow!' she exclaims, as they fell into bed and made mad passionate love..

The next day the couples rejoin their other partners and go their
separate ways. As they walked along, Charlie asks, 'Well, was it any good?'

'I hate to say it,' says Maureen, 'but it was wonderful. How about you?'

'It was horrible,' he replies. 'All I got was a headache .... She kept slapping my forehead and pulling my ears.'

The article says that anything BELOW 80 or 10% difference is cause for concern. Not sure what the 100-80 range means. Could just be your engine is ready for some rings. If they are both the same and it's running good.......I'll let you make the call. I went through the whole compression thing when I had my conditonal done the first time by a certified guy. After about 20 minutes of fiddling around in his toolbox trying to find an adapter for his tester and me biting my lower lip he finally just said we'll just do an engine run when were done. The fact that the engine ran satisfied him and he signed it off.

Doug,I just looked at Just Highlander web site, and the prices are tooo much for me - They list the "Option" of changing from two 9 gallon wing tanks to two 13 gallon tanks at $1000,,,Tanks must be gold-plated or something! I could have aluminum tanks made cheaper than any FG or Plastic I have seen advertised.

My trusty new Harbor Freight compression tester is giving me 80 psi on both cyl.  Seems odd that if it had a stuck ring etc. both cyls would give the exact same reading.  The engine is running smooth and turning a 70in Warp two blade (11 degree pitch) at 6500 static.  I ground ran it at 6500 for two minutes and the EGT ran 1050 and the water temp stabilized about 180.  You guys think this thing has problems ?

I sure appreciate your help.  No one around here know dick about a 582.  They are all busy trying to get the plastic covering off the interior cushions of their RV12s.  That thing must be the Crysler New Yorker of the homebuilt world !!

Hello and welcome to the AFF Forum Wayne!

Curious why you asked the question the way you did? Are you looking at one particular Avid B for sale opportunity, or somehow feel that particular model is most desirable to you for some reason(s)? If the later, why? There are several folding wing aircraft that could be trailered, some more easily than others. Do you want to pull an enclosed trailer or open? How do you intend to use the aircraft once at your destination? Low MTOW of B model might be a negative if you're traveling/flying alone, but low empty weight would make for an easy pull. What's your budget? I think the lukewarm response to your question is because there are so many variables. I for one love to help but have kinda soured to writing lengthy posts only to realize someone hasn't even contemplated some very basic (and sometimes, show-stopping questions). Not trying to be an ass here but if you can fill in some of the blanks for us I think we can offer much more valuable input. BTW, I would LOVE to do what you propose for a year or three, what a blast!

Welcome to the forum Wayne. Any pics or details on the one your looking at? There is lots of different mods and variants out there. Depending on your mission some are desirable and some are not. If your looking for a turn key fun flyer that will get in and out of a short strip your going to want one that is light (450-550) lbs empty has a 582 that hasn't been sitting it's whole life(low Total time is good but they don't sit like a lycoming..sitting on a two-stroke is worse than running them), and has the STOL Wing (uncambered bottom vs. Flat) The Flat bottom wing is the Speedwing and unless it's been extended generally has undesirable flight characteristics. If your an experienced builder and maintainer then most of those things I mentioned can all be done fairly easy if you can get the one your looking at for the right price. Spend some time reading on here there is gobs of Avid information and the search box works well if you have some specific questions or just ask away and we'll do our best to answer.
